12.The state of Florida is best known for its beaches and plam trees.But a good mass of it is swampland.The famous Everglades,a slow-moving sheet of water full of plants and alligators(短吻鱷),cover much of the southern part of the state.To the north,the Okefenokee,which is partly in Florida and mostly in neighboring Georgia,is a true swamp(沼澤) with its own alligatoers and snakes and even beautiful orchids.
It was formed when waters from an ancient ocean  receded and a large sandbar blocked most of the water flow to the sea.Left behind was an 1,800-square-kilometer swamp.
There's no big city within 200km,but tourists from all over the world manage to find it.They all want to know about its unusual name.Okefenokee is a Miccosukee Indian word meaning land of trtembling earth.Way back in the swamp are small,floating islands,called hammocks,which one can walk across.But they tremble.Standing on them is like trying to balance on a floating mattress(床墊).
The Okefenokee,which is already nearly filled with plants,would probably dry and become just another forest,were it not for range fires that come along every once in a while and burn out rotton vegetation(植被).So the water in this protected National Wildlife Refuge keeps moving-slowly,very slowly.

45.According to the passage,Everglades liesB.
A.mainly in Georgia
B.south of Okefenokee
C.north of Florida
D.near National Wildlife Refuge
46.The underlined word"receded"in the second pargaraph probably meansD.
A.dried up       B.floated away
C.poutred down   D.drew back
47.The third paragraph mainly tells usC.
A.where Okefenokee is located
B.what the size of the Okefenokeeis
C.how Okefenokee gets its special name
D.how shaking islands come into being
48.What can be inferred according to the text?A
A.Range fires prevent Okefenokee from drying up.
B.Hammocks tremble constantly but do not move.
C.Okefenokee's alliagtors attract many tourists.
D.Florida and Georgia cover 1,800km2 in total.

根據(jù)第一段…cover much of the southern part of the state.To the north,the Okefenokee,which is partly in Florida,可知,Everglades位于Okefenokee的南部;故選B.
46.D. 根據(jù)when引導(dǎo)的時(shí)間狀語從句…a large sandbar blocked most of the water flow to the sea可知,由于古時(shí)候海洋退潮時(shí)大部分水流被巨大的沙洲阻截了,由此可知,receded的含義應(yīng)該等同于draw back后退,退潮;故選D.
47.C. They all want to know about its unusual name.
48.A. The Okefenokee,which is already nearly filled with plants,would probably dry and become just another forest,were it not for range fires that come along every once in a while and burn out rotton vegetation.

17.The devastation of Typhoon Morakot over Taiwan and eastern China is a reminder that the northwest Pacific is the most dangerous region in the world for tropical storms.The worst of these are typhoons,which are the same as hurricanes in the Atlantic and eastern Pacific,or cyclones in the Indian Ocean and Australia.They all have winds of more than 118km/h (73mph) spinning around a central core.
These storms start off as a mass of thunderstorms in the tropics outside the Equator.Given the right conditions,they form a bigger and more organised storm and feed off warm seas at more than 26.5C (80F) to get the fuel that they need to become a fully-fledged(羽毛豐滿的) typhoon,hurricane or cyclone.Each storm is like a heat engine,extracting heat from the warm,humid air over the sea and turning it into phenomenal amounts of energy-equivalent to about 200times the entire world's electrical generating capacity.But warm,moist air is not enough-these storms also need slack winds aloft,because strong high-altitude winds can rip off the top of the storm clouds and send the entire storm tumbling(翻跟頭).
The damage from tropical storms often comes from their winds,or the storm surges from the sea as the winds pile up water into a huge battering ram(沖擊夯) that floods coastlines.But the devastation from Typhoon Morakot came from its unbelievable rainfall-about a year's average rain in some places-that set off landslides and mudslides.

45.According to the first paragraph,the common point among typhoons,hurricanes and cyclones isB.
A.that they all come from the oceans
B.that they all have winds of over 118km/h spinning around a central core
C.that they all cause great damage
D.that they all can generate electricity
46.Which of the following is the best title of this passage?A
A.Typhoon Morakat devestates Taiwan and eastern China
B.How is the typhoon formed?
C.Typhoon Morakot was how to devestate the areas it travelled
D.How terrible is Typhoon Morakat!
47.The devastation from Typhoon Morakot is mainly fromB.
A.its wind                   B.its rainfall
C.landslides and mudslides   D.the storm
48.It can be inferred from the passage thatA.
A.Taiwan is off the northwest Pacific
B.the damage from tropical storms often comes from their winds
C.tropical storms often happen
D.tropical storms only need warm,moist air.
