Phil White has just returned from an 18,000-mile, around-the-world bicycle trip. White had two reasons for making this epic journey. First of all, he wanted to use the trip to raise money for charity, which he did. He raised £70,000 for the British charity, Oxfam. White's second reason for making the trip was to break the world record and become the fastest person to cycle around the world. He is still waiting to find out if he has broken the record or not.
White set off from Trafalgar Square, in London, on 19th June 2004 and was back 299 days later. He spent more than l,300 hours in the saddle(車座)and destroyed four sets of tyres and three bike chains. He had the adventure of his life crossing Europe, the Middle East, India, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and the Americas. Amazingly, he did all of this with absolutely no support team. No jeep carrying food, water and medicine. No doctor. Nothing! Just a bike and a very, very long road.
The journey was lonely and desperate at times. He also had to fight his way across deserts, through jungles and over mountains. He cycled through heavy rains and temperatures of up to 45 degrees, all to help people in need. There were other dangers along the road. In Iran, he was chased by armed robbers and was lucky to escape with his life and the little money he had. The worst thing that happened to him was having to cycle into a headwind on a road that crosses the south of Australia. For 1,000 kilometres he battled against the wind that was constantly pushing him. This part of the trip was slow, hard work and depressing, but he made it in the end. Now Mr. White is back and intends to write a book about his adventures.

Hank Viscardi was born without legs. He had—not legs but stumps(殘肢) that could be fitted with a kind of special boots. People stared at him with cruel interest. Children laughed at him and called him ‘Ape Man’ (猿人) because his arms practically dragged on the ground.
Hank went to school like other boys. His grades were good and he needed only eight years to finish his schooling instead of the usual twelve. After graduating from school, he worked his way through college. He swept floors, waited on table, or worked in one of the college offices. One day, some of the girls in our neighborhood started acting a bit strangely towards me.They     talking to me.After a day or so of this,I finally     what was going on.I'd said something to a(n)       girl the night before that she didn't like.I'd had a few      that night, and like everyone I sometimes say things that     severer than I mean them to.
Anyway,it seemed that the girl had told many of her friends, and now they were all     at me.They found a great     to think of all the other supposed“crimes”I'd committed over the past year.    they'd all really liked me before, suddenly they     I was a really bad guy.
This was a difficult problem.I     to get along well with these people and I liked them all.I didn't want them to     me because of something stupid I'd said when I was drunk. It didn't    much whether they or I was wrong. All I wanted was things to be     to normal again.
So I wrote the popular girl a note     saying:“I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings.I didn't mean to”.And that was it.The problem was solved.   .the girls who were angry with me now liked me     than ever. They felt I'd done something     in admitting I was wrong and apologizing.
Learn how and when to     .Often, the pride and stubbornness you hold onto by refusing to back down isn't worth the     of a lasting argument. An apology can     for healing a difficult situation. And often, people will think better of you for it.

In 1943, during the Second World War the body of an English man, William Martin, was discovered off the Spanish coast. The papers he had been carrying were returned to England, where they were carefully examined. They had clearly been changed and that was exactly what the British had hoped would happen, for Martin was a trick designed to fool the Germans.
Martin did not exist. The body was that of a sailor who looked as though he had died when his boat sank, but in fact he had been ill and died. Leaving the boat to go down, his parents allowed the dead body to be put into the sea near Spain. It was hoped that the Germans would find it and read the fake(假的)papers he carried.
The papers said that the British would attack the island of Sardinia, when in fact they planned to attack the island of Sicily. The trick was successful. When the British landed on Sicily, most of the heavy German guns had been moved to defend(保衛(wèi)) Sardinia.
