A few years ago, I was with a close woman friend in a grocery store in California. As we walked along the aisle (過(guò)道), we saw a mother with a small boy moving in the opposite direction and met us head-on (正面的) in each aisle. The woman barely noticed us because she was so angry with her little boy, who wanted to pull items off the lower shelves. As the mother became more and more annoyed, she started to yell at the child and several aisles later had progressed to shaking him by the arm.k+s-5#u

At this point my friend spoke up.A wonderful mother of three and founder of a progressive school, she had probably never once in her life treated any child so harshly(嚴(yán)厲地).I expected my friend would give this woman a solid mother-to-mother talk about controlling herself and about the effect this behavior has on a child.Instead, my friend said, “What a beautiful little boy.How old is he?” The woman answered cautiously, “He’s three.” My friend went on to comment on how curious he seemed and how her own three children were just like him in the grocery store, pulling things off shelves, so interested in all the wonderful colors and packages.“He seems so bright and intelligent,” my friend said.

The woman had the boy in her arms by now and a shy smile came upon her face.Gently brushing his hair out of his eyes, she said, “Yes, he’s very smart and curious, but sometimes he wears me out.” My friend responded sympathetically(表示同情地), “Yes, they can do that; they are so full of energy.”

As we walked away, I heard the mother speaking kindly to the boy about getting home and cooking his dinner.“We’ll have your favorite — macaroni(通心面) and cheese,” she told him.

The mother was angry with her baby because

A.the mother was very tired k+s-5#u

B.the baby asked for more things

C.the baby ran madly in the store

D.the baby was pulling the goods off the shelves

Every fast-food employee knows that the drive-through window is the worst position. The window sticks with constant ice; the roar of engines hurts your ? ; your words are lost in the howling wind.

On a ? ? ? afternoon, everything changed.

Every once in a while, the sub-zero temperatures seal a ? ? ? windows shut. Drivers don’t exactly enjoy having to stand outside in the cold,? ? ? their orders into a speaker box, when they expect to drive through on their heated leather seats. “I’ll get the next car’s ? ? ? as well,” she said as she came up to the window to pay. She stood outside, ? ? ? much snow on her hair. Though she was obviously freezing, her bright ? ? ? lit up her face like a fire.

“You can’t ? ? ? their drinks,” I said, confused and tired.

“No, but I’ll buy them,” she said. “Pay it forward and all that.”

Completely puzzled, I charged her as ? ? ? , and when the next customer arrived at the window I explained what had just happened. I watched as his ? ? ?? changed — first angry to be out in the cold, then? ? ? ? at the random act of kindness, and finally, delighted by his? ? ? .

“I suppose I’ll pay for the next order then,” he replied, nodding and waving at the impatient driver ? ? him. He ? ? ? over the cash and received his pre-paid hot drink.

The trend continued. Customers arrived annoyed, only to leave ? ? ? and pleased. Some were shocked to spend much more than they had expected, ? ? ? others ended up receiving their order for less than half the price.

Five vehicles passed, then ten, then twenty. No one refused to pay. Customers stood at my window ?? ? ?? a fist-full of change to buy drinks for a complete stranger. Cars drove off, honking (鳴笛) and ?? ? ?? their thanks.

It only takes one customer, one person, to change the entire ? ? ? of traffic. It only takes one moment, one smile, to warm up even the coldest of days.

John Blanchard was studying the crowd making their way through the station. He was looking for the girl whose heart he knew, but whose face he didn’t, the girl with the rose.

When reading a book in a Florida library a year before, John became interested not in the contents of the book, but in the notes penciled in the margin((空白處). The handwriting reflected a thoughtful soul and beautiful mind. He discovered the former owner’s name in the front of the book: Miss Hollis Maynell.

He located her address and wrote a letter introducing himself. The next day he was shipped overseas to serve in the army. During the next year, they grew to know each other through the mail and their friendship developed. John requested a photograph, but she refused, saying if he really cared, it wouldn’t matter what

she looked like. When the day finally came for him to return home, their first meeting was suggested-7:00 p.m. at the Grand Central Station in New York.

She wrote, “You’ll recognize me by the red rose I wear on my coat.” So now John was in the station to meet the girl with a rose.

As a pretty and slim girl in green came over, John noticed her blue eyes like flowers in spring. He walked directly towards her, entirely forgetting she was not wearing a rose. As John came closer to her, he saw another woman with a red rose stood nearby. Well past 40, this woman had graying hair done under a worn hat. Seeing the girl in green walk quickly away, John felt as if he were split(劈開(kāi)) in two. He desired to follow that girl, but longed for the woman whose spirit had truly companioned and supported him.

The woman looked gentle and sensible. John went to her, saying, “I’m Captain John Blanchard. You must be Miss Maynell. I am glad to meet you here. May I take you to dinner?”

She replied with a smile, “I don’t know what this is about. But the lady in green who just went by, begged me to wear this rose on my coat. She said if you asked me out to dinner, I’d tell you she is waiting for you in the big restaurant across the street. She said it was some kind of test!”
