【題目】People who are worried about bad breath often reach for a toothbrush or a gun. But in the future, personal breath monitoring may include far more than fresh breath.

In face, breath is so rich in chemical compounds that fully understanding it has proved challenging. Each breath contains gases like carbon dioxide, the volatile(揮發(fā)性的)remains of recent snacks, medicines and even compounds taken in from things like carpeting or various kinds of air pollution. But breath detectors(檢測(cè)器) can sort out these substances with increasing sensitivity(敏感性)。

Scientists are building electronic sniffers that examine the exhaled(呼氣)air for signs of cancer, asthma(哮喘), and other diseases.

“There are clear signatures in the breath for liver(肝)disease, kidney(腎)disease and heart disease. Breath is a rich mixture that can reflect out state of health and disease.” said Dr. Raed Dweik, director of the Cleveland Clinic, adding “Breath analysis is the future of medical testing.”

He and his partners are testing a desktop system called BreathLink for use in rapid identification of diseases. The system is designed to work wherever there is an Internet connection. To use BreathLink, a person breathes into a long tube, and a breath sample is collected and analyzed within the system. Then it can detail chemical concentrations(濃度)of the breath in graphics. Dr. Raed Dweik said, “If you examine patients of asthma, you will find they have higher levels of nitric oxide(一氧化碳) in their exhaled air. It reflects their abnormal symptoms in the lungs.” His tests have reached 85 percent accuracy(精確度)so far in spotting people with some illness.

But some trained dogs, he pointed out, can sniff out cancer with 99 percent accuracy—although without the ability to identify particular compounds the way some detectors can.

“We are getting better and better,” he said. “But whether we will ever approach the accuracy of the dog—we don’t know.”

【1】What is the breath detector used for?

A. To find what kind of disease a person has.

B. To identify substances from people’s breath.

C. To help a patient recover from disease.

D. To smell how bad the breath is.

A. show how he and his partners treated patients

B. tell why a person has asthma

C. show how sensitive the device is

D. show how to diagnose a patient of asthma

【3】It can be inferred that_______

A. brushing teeth can improve one’s bad breath

B. there are leftovers like snacks and medicines in one’s breath

C. one can know exactly about his physical state through the breath

D. breath analysis can be helpful in medical diagnosis

【4】What’s the author’s attitude towards the future of breath detectors?

A. Indifferent B. Positive

C. Doubtful. D. Critical.

【題目】You may have experienced the frustration(挫敗感)of being slapped with a parking fine(罰款)or finding your car held firmly in the place after leaving it parked precariously(不安全的) for a couple of minutes. But now a high-tech car sticker that's designed to be stuck to a car’s windscreen, could help motorists avoid such a situation by allowing a traffic warden(管理員)to get in touch with them.

The TowStop sticker sends a text message to a driver when it is touched by a traffic warden, to allow motorists to send a reply and give them time to move their car immediately. It’s designed to save drivers time and money by giving them a chance to move their car instead of having it towed(拖) away but relies on the good will of traffic wardens. Frankfurt-based IT consultant(顧問(wèn)), Daniel Kalliontzis, came up with the idea and is raising funds on Indiegogo to put his 54 (43) sticker into production.

Car owners can buy the sticker and place it inside their car's windscreen, having set it up with important information, such as their phone number. The message will ask them to move their car immediately .The driver could then type a reply for the warden using their smartphone, which will appear on the sticker's screen. They may choose to write something along the lines of back in two minutes in a bid to avoid a fine.

The smart sticker system will rely on the good will of traffic wardens and critically, a German law. The law states: An officer has to choose the most efficient nd inexpensive way for the car owner to remove the vehicle. It could be cheaper for the authorities to contact the driver than to tow his car.

【1What is the purpose of the first paragraph?

A. To arouse readers’ interest in the new invention.

B. To tell readers some ways of parking cars.

C. To show drivers how to avoid parking fine.

D. To disclose(揭示)how traffic wardens fine drivers.

【2Daniel Kalliontzis came up with the idea of the slicker so that______.

A. traffic can be smooth

B. drivers can avoid being fined

C. cars can be put in safe places

D. laws can be carried out

【3If traffic warden wants to send a text message to the driver, he should_______.

A. slap the windscreen B. strike the wheel

C. use a smartphone D. touch the sticker

【4】From the passage we know that________.

A. a German traffic warden is required to remind car owners to move their cars

B. the TowStop sticker will cost drivers much time and money

C. not many drivers will mind being fined

D. car owners must buy the stickers by law

【題目】Today, paper-making is a big business. But it is still possible to make paper by hand, since the steps are the same as using big machines.

You should use paper with small amounts of printing. Old envelopes are good for this reason. Colored paper also can be used, as well as small amounts of newspaper. Small pieces of rags or cloth can be added. These should be cut into pieces about five centimeters by five centimeters.

Everything is placed in a container, covered with water and brought to a boil. It is mixed for about two hours with some common chemicals and then allowed to cool. Then it is left until most of the water dries up. The substance left, called pulp(紙漿), can be stored until you are ready to make paper.

When you are ready, the pulp is mixed with water again. Then the pulp is poured into a mold. The mold is made of small squares of wire that hold the shape and thickness of the paper. To help dry the paper, the mold lets the water flow through the small wire squares.

After several more drying steps, the paper is carefully lifted back from the mold. It is now strong enough to be touched.

The paper is smoothed and pressed to remove trapped air. You can use a common electric iron used for pressing clothes.

【1It is suggested that we “should choose paper with small amounts of printing” to_____.

A. make paper by ourselves

B. renew the old envelopes

C. make various colored paper

D. create our own newspaper

【2Whether the paper is strong enough to be touched is determined by _____.

A. how long the pulp is stored

B. how thick the paper is

C. how much water remains

D. what type of chemicals are used

【3When the paper is lifted from the mold, it is time to _____.

A. make it smooth B. make it strong

C. decorate it D. use an iron

【4】The passage is most probably intended to _____.

A. introduce the history of paper-making

B. describe the process of paper-making

C. compare the ancient with the modern paper-making

D. argue about the possibility of paper-making by hand
