We all know that some things are obviously right. For example, it is right to be    1   to other people. It is also right to look after the environment. Some things are   2   wrong, too. For instance, we should not hurt or bully(欺負) others, nor should we litter. Rules often tell us what is right or wrong.
Rules can help the public make the right    3  ,and remain safe. Car drivers have to obey traffic regulations that tell them the right things to do on the road to avoid crashes. Cyclists who give signals before turning or stopping help prevent   4  .
If people follow rules without taking other matters into consideration, it will be    5  for them to form what is sometimes called a “black and white” view. For example, they may believe that people should always tell the truth, and that lying is   6   acceptable. Such people always stick to their views, even if it means that they may get into   7  .
Sometimes it may not be so easy to know   8  what is right or wrong. Some people choose not to eat meat because they believe that it is    9   to eat animals, but others argue that they can eat meat and    10   be kind to animals; some insist that stealing is always wrong, but others think that one does not need to feel to   11   when stealing some food to eat, if lives in a really poor area and he is   12  . Rules help us live together in harmony, because they show us the right way to   13   other. However, some people argue that rules may be    14  , having observed that rules change all the time , and that some schools have some regulations and other have different ones ----so who is to   15  what is right ?

Thanks to the Internet, a whole new online world has been opened up for us to meet, chat and go where we’ve never been before.
But just as in face to face communication, there are some rules of behavior that should be followed when on line.  The basic rule is simple: treat others in the same way you would want to be treated.   Imagine how you’d feel if you were in the other person’s shoes.
For anything you’re about to send: ask yourself, “Would I say this to the person’s face?” if the answer is no, rewrite and reread.  Repeat the process till you feel sure that you’d feel comfortable saying words to a person’s  face.
If someone in the chat room is rude to you, your instinct (本能) is to fire back in the same manner. But try not to do so.  Just pay no attention to it, or block his message.  If it was caused by a disagreement with another member, try to fix the situation by politely discussing it. Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of others in the chat room.
Everyone was new to the network once.  Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how to communicate. When someone makes a mistake, whether it’s a stupid question or an unnecessarily long answer, be kind about it. If it’s a small mistake, you may not need to say anything. Even if you feel strongly about it, think twice before saying anything. Having good manners yourself doesn’t give you license to correct everyone else.
If you do decide to tell someone about a mistake, point it out politely At the same time, if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those that you have offended.
It is not polite to ask others personal questions such as their age, sex and marital status. Unless you know the person very well, and you are both comfortable with sharing personal information, don’t ask such questions.
小題1:When you send short messages to a person, you must _______.
A.make sure they mean no harm
B.read them again and again
C.say something good to hear
D.repeat them later to his face
小題2:If you are hurt in the chat room by others, you should_____.
A.fight back in the same way
B.take it seriously
C.be angry at them
D.have none of them
小題3:If a newcomer who communicates online makes a mistake, you ___.
A.should point it out immediately
B.can say something about it
C.have the duty to correct it
D.shouldn’t give advice unless required
小題4:The passage mainly tells us _______.
A.rules of the chat room
B.some rules of Internet communication
C.ways of sending messages
D.ways of making online friends

It is hardly surprising that clothing manufacturers(生產(chǎn)商) follow certain uniform standards for various features(特征) of clothes. What seems strange, however, is that the standard adopted for women is the opposite of the one for men. Take a look at the way your clothes button. Men’s clothes tend to button from the right, and women’s from the left. Considering most of the world’s population—men and women—are right-handed, the men’s standard would appear to make more sense for women. So why do women’s clothes button from the left?
History really seems to matter here. Buttons first appeared only on the clothes of the rich in the 17th century, when rich women were dressed by servants. For the mostly right-handed servants, having women’s shirts button from the left would be easier. On the other hand, having men’s shirts button form the right made sense, too. Most men dressed themselves, and a sword drawn from the left with the right hand would be less likely to get caught in the shirt.
Today women are seldom dressed by servants, but buttoning from the left is still the standard for them. Is it interesting? Actually, a standard, once set, resists change. At a time when all women’s shirts buttoned from the left, it would have been risky for any single manufacturer to offer women’s shirts that buttoned from the right. After all, women had grown so used to shirts which buttoned from the left and would have to develop new habits and skills to switch. Besides, some women might have found it socially awkward to appear in public wearing shirts that buttoned from the right, since anyone who noticed that would believe they were wearing men’s shirts.
小題1:What is surprising about the standard of the clothing industry?
A.It has been followed by the industry for over 400 years.
B.It fails to consider right-handed people.
C.It woks better with men than with women.
D.It is different for men’s clothing and women’s.

A.They tended to wear clothes without buttons.
B.They drew their swords from the left.
C.They were mostly dressed by servants.
D.They were interested in the historical matters.
小題3:Women’s clothes still button from the left today because        .
A.a(chǎn)dopting men’s style is improper for women

A year ago, August, Dave Fuss lost his job driving a truck for a small company in west Michigan. His wife, Gerrie, was still working in the local school cafeteria, but it was hard for Dave to find work, and the price of everything was rising. The Fusses were at risk of joining the millions of Americans who have lost their homes in recent years. Then Dave and Gerrie received a timely gift—$7,000, a legacy(遺產(chǎn)) from their neighbors Ish and Arlene Hatch, who died in an accident. “It really made a difference when we were meeting difficulty .”says Dave.
But the Fusses weren’t the only folks in Alto and the neighboring town of Lowell to receive unexpected legacy from the Hatches. Dozens of other families were touched by what the Hatches had done. In some cases, it was a few thousand dollars; in others, it was more than $100,000.
It surprised nearly everyone that the Hatches had so much money, more than $3 million—they were an elderly couple who lived in an old house on what was left of the family farm.
Children of the Great Depression, Ish and Arlene were known for their habit of saving. They preferred comparison shopping and would go from store to store, checking prices before making a new purchase.
Through the years, the Hatches paid for local children to attend summer camps when their parents couldn’t afford it. “Ish and Arlene never asked if you needed anything,” says their friend Sandy Van Weelden, “They could see things they could do to make you happier, and they would do them.”
Even more extraordinary was that the Hatches gave away their farmland. It was the Hatches’ wish that their legacy—a legacy of kindness as much as one of dollars and cents—should enrich the whole community and last for generations to come.
Neighbors helping neighbors—that was Ish and Arlene Hatch’s story.

Age has its special advantage in America. And one of the more impressive of them is the senior citizen discount. Anyone who has reached a certain age—in some cases as low as 55-is automatically entitled to plenty of price reductions at nearly every level of commercial life. Eligibility(資格)is determined not by one’s need but by the date on one’s birth certificate. Practically the discounts have become a routine part of many businesses-as common as color televisions in motel rooms and free coffee on airliners.
People with gray hair often are given the discounts without even asking for them;yet, millions of Americans above age 60 are healthy and solvent(有支付能力的). Businesses that would never dare offer discounts to college students or anyone under 30 freely offer them to older Americans. The practice is acceptable because of the widespread belief that “elderly” and “needy” are synonymous(同義的). Perhaps that once was true, but today, to be sure, there is economic variety within the elderly, and most of them aren’t poor.
It is impossible to determine the effect of the discounts on individual companies. For many firms, they are a stimulus to income. But in other cases the discounts are given at the expense, directly or indirectly, of younger Americans. Moreover, they directly annoy some politicians and scholars who consider it a coming conflict between the generations.
Generational tensions are being fueled by continuing debate over Social Security benefits, which mostly involves a transfer of resources from the young to the old. Employment is another point. Supported by laws and court decisions, more and more older Americans are refusing the retirement dinner in favor of staying on the job-thereby lessening employment and promotion opportunities for younger workers. Far from a kind of charity they once were, senior citizen discounts have become a powerful economic privilege(特權(quán))to a group with millions of members who don’t need them.
It no longer makes sense to treat the elderly as a single group whose economic needs deserve priority over those of others. Senior citizen discounts only enrich the myth that older people can’t take care of themselves and need special treatment;and they threaten the creation of a new myth, that the elderly ale ungrateful and taking for themselves at the expense of children and other age groups. Senior citizen discounts are the heart of the very thing older Americans are fighting against-discrimination by age.
小題1:We learn from the first paragraph that   .
A.offering senior citizen discounts has become routine commercial practice
B.senior citizen discounts have enabled many old people to live a good life
C.giving senior citizen discounts has increased the market for the elderly
D.senior citizens have to show their birth certificates to get a discount
小題2:The reason to give the senior citizen discount is that   .
A.the elderly need humane help from society
B.businesses should do something for society in return
C.old people are entitled to special treatment for their contribution to society
D.the senior discounts can make up for the lack of the Social Security system
小題3:What does the author think of the Social Security system?
A.It encourages elderly people to retire in time.
B.It opens up broad career chances for young people.
C.It benefits the old at the expense of the young.
D.It should be strengthened by laws and court decisions.
小題4:What does the author mainly argue in the passage?
A.Senior citizens should fight hard against age discrimination.
B.The elderly are selfish and taking senior discounts for granted.
C.Senior citizen discounts may well be a type of age discrimination.
D.Discount should be given to the economic needs of senior citizens.

I have nothing to say about whether or not "A Day Without Immigrants" had a positive or negative effect on the question of how the federal government should deal with the huge population of undocumented illegal immigrants in this country. I'll leave that question to others.
Regardless of how you feel about the event, one conclusion is obvious. Using the theme of" A Day Without" as a way to focus national attention on a particular subject is a great idea, and could serve as a method for increasing public awareness about other issues that affect daily life in America. Here are my top three examples:
"A Day Without Speeding." How hard could this be? If all drivers would strictly obey every posted speed limit on highways, downtown, on neighborhood streets, and in parking lots for one 24-hour cycle, the benefits would be huge.
"A Day Without Losing Your Temper." A higher degree of difficulty here, and I know that from personal experience. When something goes wrong at home or on the job, there may be brief satisfaction in yelling or kicking the furniture, but erupting with anger usually doesn't do anything to solve the problem, and in many cases it makes the situation more unpleasant.
"A Day Without Having All The Answers." I would like to get a break from hearing anyone speak the phrase, "Here's what you're doing wrong." Right now the US is jampacked with citizens who believe they can point out the cause of every single problem in existence and then solve it on the spot. I believe they need to be quiet sometimes and use their ears instead of their voices.
I wonder how would average Americans react to such a collective pause? Would it be a day of angry protests, or joyful celebrations?
小題1:The first paragraph suggests           .
A.the writer is against A Day Without Immigrants
B.immigrants are not equally treated by the US federal government
C.the writer cares little about the problems of the country.
D.some people move to America without the permission of the US government
小題2:"The event" in the second paragraph is related to          .
A."A Day Without Immigrants"
B."A Day Without Having All The Answers"
C."A Day Without Speeding"
D."A Day Without Losing Your Temper"
小題3:According to the writer, losing one's temper is           .
A.personalB.satisfying C.pointlessD.unpleasant
小題4:The writer suggest a day without having all the answers because         .
A.he thinks the American are too proud
B.he doesn't think what he is doing is wrong
C.he wants others to keep quiet
D.the writer is so tired that he needs a break

Big Brothers Big Sisters is based on the simplicity and power of friendship. It is a program which provides friendship and fun by matching vulnerable young people (ages 7-17) with a volunteer adult who can be both a role model and a supportive friend.
Volunteer tutors come from all walks of life—married, single, with or without children. Big Brothers and Big Sisters are not replacement parents or social workers. They are tutors: someone to trust, to have fun with, to talk and go to when needed.
A Big Sister and Little Sister will generally spend between one and four hours together three or four times each month for at least twelve months. In the Harry Potter films, Hermione Granger is better than her male friends and is considered the brightest pupil in her grade. Isn’t it often the same in schools of our real world?
“It’s surprising but true that most of the top students have been girls since primary school. Girls are class leaders, club presidents and the top ones in exams,” said Wang Feixuan, 15, who studies at a Chengdu school. By any measure, Wang herself is a high-achiever. She is a top student, a team leader in her school’s sports club and a winner in national English and IT competitions.
But why do so many girls outperform their male peers?
In Sun Yunxiao’s latest book Save Our Boys, he points out that the education system is “more suited to girls, who are good at memorizing and like to sit quietly and read.” Yet he also says that girls have to do so much more when they compete with males for honors, top universities and later good jobs. They can feel great pressure nearly every day.
This seems to be the same in most countries in the world. Young women in the United States are also reported to feel the same pressure to be perfect.
“Let’s look at what we ask of our teenage girls,” says Professor Stephen Hinshaw in an interview. He thinks that it’s no longer enough that a girl does well in school and is a caring friend. On the TV, on the Internet and everywhere, girls see images of impossible perfection.
Today’s young women must be good learners, good athletes, and fill their after-school lives with other activities. But they are also asked to have the styles and looks of popular stars. “Be pretty, sweet and nice. Be athletic, competitive and get straight. Be impossibly perfect.” Stephen Hinshaw sums up.
小題1:The passage suggests that               .
