【題目】Finding your feet in a new town can be hard, especially if you’re covered in fur and don’t speak the language. But for pets new to Marlborough, help is at hand.

Marlborough SPCA and the Railway Café, in Blenheim, have joined forces to help welcome pets and their people to the region with a fortnightly morning tea. They hope the morning teas will get tails and tongues wagging as well as giving advice on how to make the move smoother.

Railway Café owner Leanne Harris came up with the innovative plan as a way to help welcome people to the area. Leanne moved to Marlborough from Auckland two years ago and said she initially struggled to find friends and feel part of the community. “Coming from Auckland I thought people would open their doors and that there would be neighbours calling round with cake. I expected people to come to me and, of course, it wasn’t like that. I did get lonely. “I hope to save newcomers having to wait as long as I did to feel part of it all. I would like to welcome them to the town.”

Free platters of sandwiches, cakes and other goodies will be on offer, for the people, while there will be special handmade yoghurt and banana treats for the dogs. The morning teas will take place in the covered area at the back of the popular café beside the railway station off Grove Rd.

Leanne said she was happy to devote both her time and effort into giving back to the community and felt the venture was a great fit with the SPCA.

“Volunteering is such an amazing thing to do and it changed things for me completely, and I met some amazing people with similar interests.”

SPCA Op Shop manager Karina Greenall, originally from the United Kingdom, said she also wanted to help. “I can give advice on how to resettle pets, the best parks to go to , where the best walks are and where the vet centers are in town.” There will be volunteering opportunities too for people where they can help out and hopefully make friends too.”

【題目】根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容的理解,選擇正確答案。
Research on embryonic stem cells (胚胎干細(xì)胞) is debatable because it requires the destruction of live human embryos.
Supporters find it easy to minimize the significance of this fact because the embryos are only a few days old—nothing more than "blastocysts (胚泡)".
But if it's OK to destroy 5-day-old embryos to further scientific inquiry, is it OK to destroy embryos that are five weeks old? Five months? Eight months? Science can't answer that question.
You don't have to be part of the pro-life group to have concerns about this kind of scientific research. James Thomson, the University of Wisconsin biologist has said, "If human embryonic stem cell research does not make you at least a little bit uncomfortable, you have not thought about it enough." However, the president's new order suggests we should not think too much.
Recently, supporters of embryonic stem cell research called on president to allow experiments using "surplus (多余的)" fifty frozen embryos in fertility clinics, arguing that they would be disposed of anyway. But Obama didn't limit his new policy to these fertilized eggs.
On the contrary, he left open the possibility of funding studies using embryos created specifically so their cells can be harvested. He did, however, reject another option. "We will ensure," he said, "that our government never open the door to the use of cloning for human reproduction. It is dangerous, profoundly wrong and has no place in our society, or any society."
But this position is hard to square with his claimed approach. On one hand, the president says his policy is "about letting scientists do their jobs, free from pressure". On the other, he will use pressure to keep them from doing reproductive cloning.
What this policy means is simple: It may be permissible for scientists to create cloned embryos and kill them. It's not permissible to create cloned embryos and let them live. Their cells may be used for our benefit, but not for their own.
It's the policy that is risky not just to days-old human embryos. The rest of us are sure to receive important medical benefits from this research one day. But we may lose something even more important in a moral sense.
(1)It's implied in the fourth paragraph that pro-life group ________.
A.support the research on embryonic stem cells
B.don't agree with any kind of scientific research
C.agree with James Thomson's opinion
D.rarely think of the consequences of embryonic stem cell research
(2)The underlined phrase "square with" in the passage is closest in meaning to ________.
A.find a square tool for
B.be in line with
C.quarrel with
D.pay off
(3)Which of the following statement is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The author thinks there's a big difference between a 5-day embryo and a 8-month embryo.
B.In Obama's policy, embryonic researchers can only use surplus embryos in fertility clinics.
C.President Obama hasn't expressed his attitude toward human reproductive cloning.
D.The research on embryonic stem cells may bring people medical benefits in the future.
(4)The author thinks the policy is worrying because ______.
A.the research is against the law
B.we may suffer morally for the research
C.scientists are not really working without pressure
D.ban on human cloning is in the long run harmful to human development

【題目】根據(jù)短文理解,選擇正確答案。
Living near the beach may come with an extra perk (利益): better health. A new study analyzed information from more than 48 million people in England and found that the nearer they lived to the coast, the more likely people were to report good health within the past year.
Living near the coast may be associated with better health because the seaside environment reduces stress, the researchers said. They pointed to another British study that found that people who took trips to the coast experienced more feelings of calmness and relaxation than those who visited urban parks or the countryside.
The difference from living near the coast was relatively small. But a small effect, when applied to an entire population can have a substantial impact on public health ,said study researcher Ben Wheeler of Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry in Exeter, England.
However, it's too soon to advise people to hit the beach to improve health, Wheeler said. The study only found an association, not a cause-effect link, and it's possible that other factors could explain the results. For instance, it could be that people who are wealthier, and therefore healthier, are more able to move to desired locations such as the coast, Wheeler said, a phenomenon known as the migrant effect. But the study did find that the association between coastal living and better health was strongest for those living in the poorest areas, which perhaps indicates that wealth cannot explain the results, Wheeler said.
Because the study looked at only England—an island country in which everyone lives within 72 miles of the coast—it's not clear whether the findings would apply to other populations. Far from England, a health expert not involved in the study said that while the British research certainly doesn't prove that people's health and the place they live are linked, it's possible that proximity to the seas does something for our bodies.
If future studies confirm the results, the next step would be to find out it is what coastal environments that can benefit health. Wheeler said it may then be possible to bring those benefits to people living in other areas, through virtual environments, for instance.
(1)We can conclude from the passage that ______.
A.people are encouraged to move to the coast
B.people living near the sea may be healthier
C.people pay increasingly attention to health
D.people are worried about residential environment
(2)According to the researchers, living near the sea ______.
A.doesn't nearly affect the British population
B.can cure some difficult diseases in a way
C.can help get over one's stress
D.means freeing from sadness or troubles
(3)What Ben Wheeler said means ______.
A.the British public health is decreasing
B.concrete evidence favors life near the sea
C.wealthier people are likely to be healthier
D.exact reasons are proposed for further research
(4)What does the underlined word “proximity” in the passage mean?
A.being close
B.being distant
C.being similar
D.being opposite
