People feel good about recycling, maybe even more so when it comes to electronics. While electronics recycling isn't bad, making it a panacea(萬能藥) for the e-waste problem we currently have certainly is. Unfortunately, that's how we think of recycling — and companies to jump on that trend to appear more “green”.

A case in point: Apple. In 2016, there was lots of report on Liam, a robot able to dismantle(拆卸) an iPhone in just 11 seconds — a good way to recycle 1.2 million units a year. That sounds amazing until you take into account the fact that Apple had actually sold 231 million new iPhones the year before. Liam, actually, is the perfect symbol for recycling in the field of high-tech: a drop of green water in an ocean of pollution.

According to a recent UN report, the US produces about 6.3 million tons or 14% of the world's electronic waste. Worldwide, almost 45 million tons of electronic waste were produced in 2016. Among them, only 20% had been recycled in some shape or form. The remaining 80% made its way to a more environmentally damaging end at the landfill(垃圾填埋場).

Of course, we can say it's time to double our recycling efforts. However, the huge amount of e-waste is impossible to cope with. The UN report points out that while there is an increased focus on recycling today compared to the past, the effort to reuse used devices simply can't keep pace with the high consumption rates for new devices.

In their environmental responsibility report, Apple admits that 77% of the carbon footprint of their electronics comes from their manufacture, versus(相對于) 17% comes from its actual use. The environmental effect of replacing a device, even if it is recycled after, remains significant.

1Which of the following can best describe Liam?

A.It's useful but can't make a big difference.

B.It's energy-saving but too expensive.

C.It's well-made but won't become popular.

D.It's advanced but impractical.

2What caused the e-waste recycling problem?

A.Few high-tech companies.

B.Not enough recycling efforts.

C.High demand for new electronics.

D.Difficult recycling processes.

3What does the author think of the electronics recycling?

A.It is very effective.

B.It is quite good.

C.It is environmentally damaging.

D.It is far from “green” recycling.

4What can be the best title for the text?

A.A Recent UN Report on E-Waste Problem

B.The Limitation of Electronics Recycling

C.A Good Way to Cope With E-Waste

D.The Responsibility for Apple to Decrease E-Waste

Liam, actually, is the perfect symbol for recycling in the field of high-tech: a drop of green water in an ocean of pollution.

根據(jù)第四段the effort to reuse used devices simply can't keep pace with the high consumption rates for new devices.

Unfortunately, that's how we think of recycling — and companies to jump on that trend to appear more “green”.可知大部分公司只是跟隨潮流讓自己顯得很環(huán)保,事實上并非如此,然后,根據(jù)The environmental effect of replacing a device, even if it is recycled after, remains significant.

B. The Limitation of Electronics Recycling(電子產(chǎn)品回收的局限)為最佳標題。

推理判斷題的題干特點:推斷隱含意義的題干中常含infer(推斷),suggest(暗示),imply(暗示),indicate(暗示),conclude(推斷,得出結(jié)論)等詞語。 Unfortunately, that's how we think of recycling — and companies to jump on that trend to appear more “green”.可知大部分公司只是跟隨潮流讓自己顯得很環(huán)保,事實上并非如此,然后,根據(jù)The environmental effect of replacing a device, even if it is recycled after, remains significant.

Floating mountains in the ocean are better known as icebergs (冰山). Icebergs are 1 (mass) of freshwater ice that have broken from a glacier (冰川) or polar ice sheet. Most icebergs are formed around Antarctica and Greenland.

Icebergs 2 (see) today began thousands and thousands of years ago. They began as flakes of snow falling on land. Over the years, more and more snow fell. The snow on 3bottom was crushed (壓碎) because snow on top was packing it down. Years of 4(melt) and freezing formed layers of ice thousands of feet thick. These sheets of ice are called glaciers. During the warmer weather in spring 5 summer, pieces of ice break off from glaciers. The broken pieces of ice fall into the water and become icebergs.

Icebergs vary 6 size. The largest iceberg ever recorded was the size of the state ofRhode Island in the United States. The 7 (tall) iceberg stood 550 feet above the ocean. That’s about the size of the Washington Monument in Washington, D. C.

Icebergs can be very 8 (danger) to ships traveling near them because only one-eighth of an iceberg 9 (be) above water. This means that the rock-hard ice is much larger underneath. Captains taking 10(they) ships around an iceberg may miscalculate the size of the iceberg.

Now many students have iPads and think it's a fashion to use it. Using an iPad,we can both download learning materials or read them on the screen. Obvious,it's helpful to our study, especially to English listening.

Some students, but, bring their iPads to the classroom and listen music without earphones, that makes the teacher and other students annoying. Some of them even wasted precious time in the class to play video games. In my opinion,as students,we should make a good use of iPads to help achieve academic success. However, the school should make rule instruct the students to use iPads by a proper way.

Tyler Skiuzacek’s father, Patrick, could not sleep through the night. It was 2007, and Patrick had just returned from a year in Iraq, where he served in the U. S. Army. Patrick Skluzacek was energetic and happy when he left for Iraq, Tyler says. But when he returned, he was unhappy and drinking alcohol too much. It turned out Patrick was suffering from sleep panic attacks. Patrick would wake up every night. His heart would beat too fast. He would sweat. The nighttime panic attacks prevented Patrick from feeling good the next day, because he was so tired.

Almost 10 years later, Tyler was in a position to help his father. He thought he could make a computer program that might help his father. So he entered a competition in Washington, D. C, trying to solve the problem Tyler’s father and other U. S. war veterans (老兵), were having. People called them”night terrors. ”The students had 36 hours to come up with a program. They called it myBivy—That name comes from bivouac, a military term for a safe place to sleep.

The application uses a smart watch and a smart phone together. The watch tracks the wearer’s heartbeat. It sends the data to the program on the smart phone. Research shows that a person’s heart rate will increase right before a night terror. So if the wearer’s heartbeat started to rise, myBivy would respond. The smart watch would vibrate and gently wake up the sleeping person. That was enough to prevent a night terror from happening.

Patrick wore the watch for two weeks to get used to it. Then, Tyler turned on the application. On the first night, the vibrations from the watch prevented 10 nightmares. Patrick said he had not slept that well in many years. Tyler and his team won the contest in Washington, D. C. The prize was $1,500. Then the group tried to raise more money from investors, and they were surprised when they took in over$25,000. By the spring of 2016, Tyler and his team were testing the app with volunteers, and hoped to make it available to the public soon.

Researchers at the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research show how the interaction (交互) between remembering and forgetting in the brain 1 (allow) us to make more intelligent decisions 2 (base) on memory. They published a new review paper in the journal Neuron.

Forgetting makes us smart by working with memorizing 3 the following ways, the researchers say. First, letting go of outdated information lets us adapt to new situations. By forgetting the old and potentially misleading information, we can adapt to new environments 4 (easy). Second, forgetting also makes decision- making simple. We just remember the important information which makes it easy for us 5 (make) wise decisions.

What and how much we remember can 6 (decide) by our environments, For example, a lawyer or a designer with a set of clients will likely remember 7 (they) names for a longer period of time, A cashier who has a changing sea of 8 (customer) every day will only remember names for a short amount of time.

The researchers point out that the motto is true: If you don’t use it, you lose it. But as 9 review paper shows, it can be a good thing. Clearing out the information you don’t need can help make room for the important things, 10 can make you become more intelligent.
