The benefits of keeping a journal (日志)
If you want to grow, one important thing you should do is keeping a journal. It may seem simple, but it can make a big difference in your life. I have been keeping journals for years. Writing all the lessons I learn and all the ideas I get has become a habit for me. 1. Here are some benefits you will get by keeping a journal.
◆ It prevents you from losing an idea. Have you ever gotten an idea only to lose it later because you didn’t write it down? 2. But then I developed the habit of writing down every idea that came into my mind as soon as possible. If I’m away from my computer, I usually write it down on a piece of paper that I bring wherever I go. I will then transfer the idea to the journal in my computer.
◆ It helps you review all the lessons you’ve learned. By reviewing your journal, you can quickly see the lessons you’ve learned and the ideas you’ve gotten. 3. You can use the ideas to propel (鞭策) yourself forward.
◆ 4. After keeping a journal for years, you can look back at it and see how far you’ve gone. Things that were big problems in the past might seem small today. The raw ideas you had in the past might have been realized today.
◆ It helps you expand your ideas. When you try to come up with a sentence to express an idea, you are thinking actively about it. 5. In the end, you will expand your ideas.
A.I often experienced that myself.
B.It trains you to express your thoughts.
C.It allows you to see your progress over time.
D.Just use whatever tool you feel comfortable with.
E. Thinking actively helps you connect your idea to another idea.
F. And to be honest, I can’t imagine what my life would be like without it.

Last night’s meteor (流星) shower left many people in the community dissatisfied and demanding answers. According to Gabe Rothschild, Emerald Valley’s mayor, people gathered in the suburbs of the city, carrying heavy telescopes, expecting to watch the brightly burning meteors passing through the sky. What they found instead was a sky so brightened by the city’s lights that it darkened the light of the meteors passing overhead.
“My family was so frustrated,” admitted town resident Duane Cosby, “We wanted to make this an unforgettable family outing, but it turned out to be a huge disappointment.”
Astronomers—scientists who study stars and planets—have been complaining about this problem for decades. They say that light pollution prevents them from seeing objects in the sky that they could see quite easily in the past. They call on people and the government to take measures to fight against it.
There is yet a population besides professional and amateur star observers that suffers even more from light pollution. This population consists of birds, bats, frogs, snakes, etc. For example, outdoor lighting severely affects migrating (遷徙的) birds. According to the International Dark-Sky Association, “100 million birds a year throughout North America die in crashes with lighted buildings and towers.”
Countless more animal casualties (傷亡) result from the use of artificial lighting. Clearly, people enjoy the benefits of lighting their evenings. But some scientists think it can be harmful for humans, too. They worry that exposure to light while sleeping can increase a person’s chances of getting cancer.
Emerald Valley is only one community that is becoming aware of the negative effects of light pollution. For years, Flagstaff, Arizona, has enforced lighting regulations in its city in order to assist astronomers at the Lowell Observatory. Similar efforts have been made worldwide, and a movement is underway to remind us to turn off lights when we are not using them, so that other creatures can share the night.

Organic foods are produced according to certain production standards, meaning they are grown without the use of conventional pesticides, or chemical fertilizers and that they were processed without food additives. Livestock are raised without the routine use of antibiotics(抗生素)or growth hormones. In most countries, organic produce must not be genetically modified. They may also be required to be produced using energy-saving technologies and packaged using recyclable materials when possible.
Early consumers interested in organic food would look for non-chemically treated, fresh or minimally processed food.
They mostly had to buy directly from growers: “Know your farmer, know your food” was the motto. Personal definitions of what constituted ( 組成)“organic” were developed through first-hand experience: by talking to farmers, seeing farm conditions, and farming activities. Historically, organic farms were relatively small family-run farms — which is why organic food was once only available in small stores or farmers’ markets.
However, since the early 1990s organic food has had growth rates of around 20% a year. As of April 2008, organic food accounts for 1 - 2% of food sales worldwide. Currently organic food production is legally regulated. Many countries require producers to obtain organic certification in order to market food as organic.
Several studies have attempted to examine and compare conventional and organic systems of farming. The general consensus(共同看法)is that, in the short term, organic farming is less damaging for the following reasons:
● Organic farms do not release synthetic pesticides (合成農(nóng)藥) into the environment — some of which have the potential to harm soil, water and local wildlife.
● Organic farms are better than conventional farms at keeping diverse ecosystems, i.e., populations of plants and insects, as well as animals.
● Organic farms are more energy efficient and produce less waste.
Another report published in March 2008 by The Organic Center claims that organic food is on average 25% more nutritious than conventional food.
However, many critics believe that the increased land needed to farm organic food could potentially destroy the rainforests and wipe out many ecosystems. And organic products cost 10 to 40% more than similar conventionally produced products. Processed organic foods in supermarkets are 65% more expensive.
1. Early consumers knew what food was “organic” by _______.
A. firsthand experience B. the “certified organic” label tag
C. its packaging D. examining its organic certification
2. We can infer that _______.
A. in America, organic food can only be bought in small stores or farmers’ markets
B. organic food is also available in large supermarkets at present
C. organic food is produced by large-scale farms
D. organic food is often beautifully packaged
3. According to the passage, organic food is considered as _______.
A. junk food B. delicious snacks C. green food D. conventional food
4. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. The benefits of organic food. B. The cost of organic food.
C. The disadvantages of organic food. D. Organic food and conventional food.
5. Which of the following statements does NOT support the view that organic farming is more environment-friendly?
A. Organic food is generally thought to be more nutritious.
B. Organic farms are more energy efficient and produce less waste.
C. Organic farms are better than conventional farms at maintaining varieties of plants, insects and animals.
D. Organic farms do not release synthetic pesticides into the environment.

We all know that regular physical exercise is good for a girl’s body, mind, and spirit .Here are a few:
Research shows that girls who play sports do better in school and are more likely to graduate than those who don’t.Exercise improves learning, memory, and concentration, which can give active girls an advantage when it comes to the classroom.

Working with coaches, trainers, and teammates to win games and achieve goals is great practice for the real world, where teamwork is a key to success. For years, boys learned these skills through sports while girls sat on the sidelines. But as more and more women hit the field, they’re joining boys in both the classroom and the boardroom.

I am sure that everybody in his/her life has used computers. Nowadays you can feel their presence everywhere at home,at school,at work and they certainly make life easier. On the other hand, there are people who can’t work with them.
Anyway,I believe their presence is a good thing. Life with them seems easier, less difficult and more comfortable You can use them to choose your meal,to withdraw your money, and also save your time, because these operations are all controlled by computers. Therefore you can hardly imagine the modern world without them;the whole planet seems to be one big computer society.
Nevertheless, problems can often appear in this area, too.To have a computer means you have to be quite well-off and have the necessary skills to use it.However, think about questions like “Are computers so available for everyone, or rich and poor people, for people from villages and people from cities. Aren’t they too expensive? Is everyone able to learn how to use them and not everyone has the chance to access and work with them, how could everything in the future be dependent on them?”Therefore,I think our society will be split into two parts. One part will work with them and enjoy the benefits that computers can bring and the other part will be pushed out and will actually be far behind the other group.
Another question that bothers me is,on the one hand, computers are important and good things in our life, but they aren’t everything. They are good as a help at school, quite often as entertainment, especially for young people,as an necessary tool to help in research etc,but I think we shouldn’t be so dependent on them, because computers are only machines and machines can’t feel anything be human and sympathetic, and every action performed by computer can be interfered with another person, which could cause these machines to crash or work badly.
In conclusion,I would like to say I am not against computers.I use computers, too, but people should be wary all the time.
1.By saying “wary”(In the last paragraph),the writer is trying to say “People should_______.
A. be strongly for the use of computers because of its convenience
B. be careful with computers that will also cause problems
C. master more necessary computer skills
D. not do something that causes computers to work badly
2.Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
3. In the third paragraph, the author presents his idea by________
A. asking questions for people to think about
B. giving examples to support his argument
C. raising questions and answering them
D. expressing his opinion directly
4. The writer’s main purpose in writing the passage is__________
A. to encourage us to use computers in our society
B. to advise us to say no to computers from now on
C. to remind us to care about the problems that computers bring.
D. to inform us that the computer has become a necessary part of our life

To forgive may be wonderful, but no one ever said it was easy. When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be extremely difficult to let go of your anger.
___1___ Indeed, research has shown that people who forgive report more energy, better appetite and better sleep patterns. “People who forgive show less anger and more hopefulness,” says Dr. Frederic Luskin, who wrote the book Forgive for Good.
So how do you start the healing? Try following these steps:
Calm yourself. Take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, someone you love.
Don’t wait for an apology. ___2___ Luskin says, “They may have wanted to hurt you or they just don’t see things the same way. So if you wait for people to apologize, you could be waiting a very long time.” Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean coming to terms with the person who upsets you or forgiving his or her action after your quarrel.
___3___ Mentally going over your hurt gives power to the person who brought you pain. “Instead, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you.” Luskin says.
___4___ If you attach great importance to that person, you may realize that he or she was acting out of ignorance, fear and even love. To gain others’ stand, you may want to write a letter to yourself from your offender’s point of view.
___5___ Research has shown that people who forgive make a good show of more energy, better appetite and better sleeping patterns.
Don’t forget to forgive yourself. “For some people, forgiving themselves is the biggest challenge." Luskin says, “but it can rob you of your self-confidence if you don’t do it.”
A. Many times the person who hurt you may never think of apologizing.
B. Break away from the influence of your offender on you early.
C. But forgiveness is possible —and it can be surprisingly helpful to your physical and mental health.
D. Try to see things from the other person’s stand.
E. So it is difficult to forgive others and even yourself.
F. Recognize the benefits of forgiveness.
G. Forgiveness is not good of people.
