Nearly twenty years has passed, I still remember my favourite professor, James Sehwartz. And almost all his students are his friends, and almost all his students know his life story.
When James was a teenager, his father1him to a fur (毛皮)factory where he worked . This was during the Great Depression(大蕭條). The2was to get James a job.
He entered the factory, and immediately felt as if the walls had closed in around him. The room was dark and hot, the windows covered with dust, and the3were packed tightly together, running like trains. The fur hairs were flying,4the air thicker, and the workers, sewing the pieces of fur together, were bent over their needles5the boss marched up and down the rows, shouting and forcing them to go faster. James could hardly6. He stood next to his father, frozen with fear, hoping the boss wouldn’t7at him, either.
During lunch break, his father took James to the boss and pushed him in front of him,8if there was any work for his son. But unfortunately, the answer was “no”, because at that time no one would9 it up once he takes a job.
However, for James, it was a blessing(福氣) . He hated the place. He made a(an)10that he would never do any work that brought11to someone else, and that he would never allow himself to12money from others who would lose their jobs for him.
“What will you do?” his mother , Eva , would ask him.
“I don’t know,” he would say. He ruled out(排除)law, because he didn’t like13, and he ruled out medicine , because he couldn’t take the14of blood.
15 , my best professor became a teacher, he thought it was the job not to hurt anybody.

When I was struggling with cancer a few years ago,my wife and I formed our own “couple caution circle”.Anytime a doctor came with news of my progress,my wife would give me a big hug. The reports were seldom good during the early stages of my illness, and one day a doctor brought particularly frightening news.Staring at my reports,he said in a low voice,“It doesn’t look like you’re going to make it.”
Before I could ask him a question,my wife stood up,handed me my clothes, adjusted the tubes fastened to my body and said,“Let’s get out of here. This man is a risk to your health.” As she helped me struggle to the door, the doctor came near us.“Stay back,” demanded my wife.“Stay away from us.”
As we walked together down the hall, the doctor attempted to catch up with us.“Keep going,” said my wife, pushing the intravenous (靜脈注射的) stand.“We’re going to talk to someone who really knows what is going on.” Then she held up her hand to the doctor.“Don’t come any closer to us.”
The two of us moved as one.We escaped to the safety and hope of a doctor who did not confuse diagnosis with conclusion. I could never have made that walk toward wellness alone

A successful business man was growing old and wanted to choose a successor to take over the business. He called all the young executives together and said, "I have to 1 and choose the next CEO from you."
They were 2, but the boss continued. "I am going to give you a very 3 seed. I want you to plant the seed, water it, and come back one year from today with 4 you have grown from the seed. I will then 5 the plants, and choose the next CEO."
Jim went home 6. Everyday, he would water the seed and see 7 it had grown. Although he kept 8 his seed, nothing ever grew. Many weeks went 9, still nothing. By now, others were talking about their plants, but Jim didn't have a plant and he felt like a 10.
A year later, they brought their plants to the CEO for 11. When Jim arrived, he was 12 at the variety of plants grown by the other executives. They were beautiful.
The CEO greeted them. "What great plants, trees, and flowers you have grown," said the CEO. "Today one of you will be13 the next CEO!"
All of a sudden, the CEO 14 Jim at the back with his empty pot. The CEO asked him what had happened - Jim told him the story. He looked at Jim, and then 15, "The next CEO is Jim!"
Jim couldn't believe 16. Jim couldn't even grow his seed. "How could he be the new CEO?" the others said.
Then the CEO said, "The seeds I gave you were boiled seeds; they were dead - it was not 17 for them to grow. Jim was the only one with the courage and 18 to bring me a pot with my seed in it. 19, he is the one who will be the new CEO!"

The art of giving gifts is to give something that others cannot buy for themselves.
------A.A. Milne
I have spent most of my career as a traveling salesman. There’s1lonelier than having meals myself in a coffee shop. One year, my five-year-old daughter Jeanine gave me a2. It was a soft toy penguin with a hand –painted3saying “I love My Dad!” Tears came into my eyes and immediately, I gave it a4place on my desk.
Soon I had to leave on another business5. This time when I was6, I put the penguin in my suitcase. After that day, Jeanine always helped me pack with the penguin. Many years7by and that little penguin has traveled with me hundreds of thousands of miles all across America and over to Europe. We have also made many friends8the way.

But half an hour later, he called back to say that my penguin had been found. It was late,12I drove several hours to get my little13, arriving near midnight.
When I rushed to the hotel, I found that it was waiting at the front desk. In the lobby(大廳), some14business travelers looked at us, I think, with some15and envy(羨慕). Someone came out to shake my hand. One man told me that he had even volunteered to16it to me the very next day.
Jeannie is in college now and I don’t travel17much anymore. The penguin spends most of its time18on my dresser--- a reminder that19is the best traveling companion. All those years on the road, it was the one thing I never left home20.
