It is interesting how NASA(美國航空航天管理局)chose their astronauts for landing them on the moon. They chose men 1 the age of twenty and thirty-five. There were about fifty of them, Many were 2 air pilots. 3were scientists with two or three degrees. NASA telephoned each man they were going to choose; told him the plans and the 4 they might get in. They then asked him if he was willing to be trained as an astronaut. “How could any man 5such an exciting job?” One of them said, “Dangerous? Of course. It’s dangerous 6most exciting”
The health and physical condition of 7was, of course, very necessary. 8 those in very good health and physical condition were chosen.

Professor Reason recently persuaded 35 people to keep a diary of all their absent-minded actions for two weeks. When he came to analyze their embarrassing errors, he was surprised to find that nearly all of them fell into a few groups.
One of the women, for instance, on leaving her house for work one morning threw her pet dog her earrings and tried to fix a dog biscuit on her ear. “The explanation for this is that the brain is like a computer,” explains the professor. “People programme themselves to do certain activities regularly.” It was the woman’s custom every morning to throw her dog two biscuits and then put on her earrings. “But somehow the action got reversed(顛倒)in the programme.” About one in twenty of the incidents the volunteers reported were these “programme assembly failures.”
Twenty percent of all errors were “test failures” — mainly due to not verifying the progress of what the body was doing. A man about to get his car out of the garage passed through the back yard where his garden jacket and boots were kept, put them on — much to his surprise. A woman reported, “I got into the bath with my socks on.”
The commonest problem was information “storage failures”. People forgot the names of people whose faces they knew, went into a room and forgot why they were there, mislaid something, or smoked a cigarette without realizing it.
The research so far suggests that while the central processor of the brain is liberated from second-to-second control of a well-practiced routine, it must repeatedly switch back its attention at important decision points to check that the action goes on as intended. Otherwise the activity may be gotten by another frequently and recently used programme, resulting in embarrassing errors

    3. C.
A lady fell as she was paying attention to each step her feet were taking
    4. D.
An old man, with his shoes on, was trying to put on his socks

What is the difference between a college and a university? This is a good question for students who want to attend a college or a university in the United States.
Colleges and universities have many things in common. Both provide a greater understanding of the world and its past. Both provide education in the arts and sciences. And both can help prepare young people to earn a living.
Students who complete their undergraduate studies either at a four-year college or a university receive a bachelor’s degree. One difference is that many colleges do not offer graduate studies.
Universities are generally bigger, offer more programs and do more research. Modern universities developed from those of the Middle Ages in Europe. The word “university” comes from the Latin “universitas”. This described a group of people organized for a common purpose. The word “college” comes from a Latin word with a similar meaning, “collegium”. In England, colleges were formed to provide students with places to live in. Usually each group of students was studying the same thing. So college came to mean an area of study. But a college can also be a part of a university. The first American universities divided their studies into a number of areas and called each one a college. This is still true.
Programs in higher learning may also be called schools. The University of Arizona in Tucson, for example, has 18 colleges and 10 schools. They include the colleges of pharmacy (制藥學(xué)), education, engineering and law. They also include the schools of architecture, dance and public administration.
College is also used as a general term for higher education. A news report might talk about “college students” even if they include students at universities. Or someone might ask, “Where do you go to college?”
Today, most American colleges offer an area of study called liberal arts. These are subjects first developed and taught in ancient Greece. They include language, philosophy and mathematics. The purpose is to train a person’s mind instead of teaching job skills

    3. C.
help students make a better choice of what kind of colleges they should go to
    4. D.
inform students about how much they are going to spend in going to college
  2. 2.

When the term “college students” appears in a newspaper, it may refer to ________

    1. A.
      only students studying in colleges
    2. B.
students studying in colleges in the USA
    3. C.
      only students studying in universities
    4. D.
      students receiving higher education
  3. 3.

What can we learn from the passage?

    1. A.
Both universities and colleges include different schools
    2. B.
The purpose of liberal arts is to train a person’s job skill
    3. C.
Both universities and colleges can help prepare students to make a living
    4. D.
Most American universities have 18 colleges and 10 schools

The area of study called liberal arts is designed to _______

    1. A.
get students ready to earn a living
    2. B.
teach students subjects from engineering to philosophy
    3. C.
help students achieve a stronger and clearer mind

Signs can sometimes be seen at the entrance of a house, expressing that a tramp(流浪漢)has passed. This special sign-language is frequently 1  by tramps to inform their  2  whether the host of a certain house is friendly or unfriendly, and to 3 them the trouble of making unnecessary calls.
Quite 4  one day, I came across a real tramp. He was such a rare sight these days that I stood some distance away and watched him. He was dressed just as a tramp should be in, old worn trousers, and a jacket many sizes too big for him. On his head there was a battered old hat and his boots were so old and worn; they were almost coming into pieces.
But the man himself looked cheerful as if he had not a 5 in the world. He rubbed his nose with his forefinger,  6 a funny turn, laid a small parcel  7  the front gate, and began 8 a sign made by a former caller. Although the sign was meaningless to me, it must have been 9 , for the tramp’s face lit up with satisfaction. He entered the front gate 10  and rang the bell. When the door opened, I saw him raise his hat 11  couldn’t hear his words. The 12  was very short indeed, for no sooner had he spoken a few words than the door closed fiercely in his face.
I felt 13  for him as he walked sadly out of the house. But just as quickly, his face lit up again and he moved quickly towards the gate. There he stopped, looked at the sign, and shook his head seriously as if he had made a bad mistake. 14  deeply into his pockets, he produced a piece of chalk, rubbed out the existing sign and made a new one in its place. He stared at it for a moment smiling to himself, then gathered his belongings, pushed back his hat and began walking towards the next house at an unhurried 15 , whistling as he went along.

Our Future Homes
What kinds of homes will we live 1 the future? Nobody can be sure, 2 architects, and scientists are 3 new ideas now.
Some architects are thinking about 4 whole cities under huge glass domes. Of course, complicated heating and 5 systems will be necessary to control the climate in the domes. 6, there will never be any rain 7snow, and the temperature will be always 8.
Perhaps everyone will live in vertical(立體的) 9. High rises are so large that they can contain all the necessities of life. Since vertical cities will use 10 land than horizontal cities, and provide homes for more people, they will be 11 for small countries that have12 populations.
Another idea that will be helpful to 13 countries (and island countries) is
the 14 city. Monaco has already built homes, stores, and offices 15 the water of the Mediterranean Sea. And a Japanese 16 has made a plan for constructing buildings on bridges over Tokyo Bay.
There are some people who think we will go back to living in 17. But the caves of the future will be quite 18 the caves of the Stone Age. Computers will control light and climate. Farms and parks will be on the land 19 the cave city. When people want to go to the country or to a park, a short ride in 20 will take them there.

A camp built by students and volunteers spreads over Southern Methodist University(SMU). The affordable1 are designed to be used by the poor as well as survivors of war and natural disasters.
“By the time 2020, there’s going to be about 1.7 billion people living in slums(貧民窟) so we would like to2 change,” says Stephanie Hunt, co-founder of the Hunt Institute for Engineering and Humanities at SMU. The goal is not just to5 lives, but to change the victims’ lives. The Institute hopes some entrepreneurs(企業(yè)家) might program and6 some money with these ideas. One of the structures in the SMU village was built with bricks made7 from recycled plastic bags.
They’re8 together with heavy wires. Harvey Lacey, father of two college-aged sons, including one here at SUM, heard about this project and9 his invention. It’s a heavy-duty, hand-crank compactor(手動(dòng)壓縮機(jī))that anybody can use to form the big bricks he calls Ubuntu Blox.
“The advantages are that these10 weigh less than two pounds. They’re very, very11 These things can go for many generations of housing, ”says Lacey, who is 12 the design. Anybody can follow his online plans to13 the compactor that turns plastic bags into bricks.
On this warm day, it’s14 inside the Ubuntu Blox hut, thanks15 to the thick plastic insulation(絕緣). Kenyan16 Ronald Omyonga, visiting the global village before returning to his native Africa, says his country is full of these recyclable bags. With Lacey’s design, he says that litter could be transformed into17 housing. He dreams of other18 too.
“Look at the Harvey Lacey hut, as a means of creating19 ,”says Omyonga.“Leaning the environment, and turning20 into something that can form houses, not just for the poor.”
