Hope is actually something we create. It’s not something that magically appears from an outside source. Now more than ever, overcoming fear and holding onto hope are necessary and important. Trying these steps below will ___________             _______.
Be Kind to Yourself
Think about what you need most, and then do it. Is it a cup of tea, quiet music, a little rest, or reading inspirational literature? Whatever it is, grant yourself permission to do it, even for just a few minutes.
Create a Daily 5-Minute Silence Moment
Light a candle and reflect. Just silently reflecting in front of a lighted candle is extremely rewarding. This may be the one time of day when you feel connected to your own soul, and perhaps even something larger.
Treat Each Day Like a Precious Gift
What if today was the last day of your life? How would you want to live it? Ask yourself this question throughout the day. It will help you let go of the countless annoyances that tend to make most people lose balance.
Take a Break
Every day, take a 30-second break to look at the sky, breathe deeply and offer thanks. Let the sky be a sign of hope. Think of other people around the world as you look at the sky, and know that we all share this planet together. Among all of us, we have the ability to create solutions to the problems that now exist.
Express Love
Surprise a friend with a hug. Leave your partner small notes expressing thanks for kind acts. Doing all of this adds warmth and positive energy to our lives and the lives of people around us. It’s also very comforting both to the giver and receiver of each loving act.

When I walked into McCarley’s Bookstore in Ashland, Ore, I began to scan titles on the shelves. The man behind the counter, Mac McCarley, asked if I’d like         . I said yes because I needed to         for college.
I worked after school and during summers, and the job helped pay for my freshman year of college. I would work many other jobs: I made coffee in the Students’ Union         college and even made maps for the US Forest Service. But selling books was one of the most

One night, when I was eight , my mother gently asked me a question I would never forget. “Sweetie, my company wants to       me but needs me to work in Brazil. This is like your teacher telling that you’ve done        and allowing you to skip a grade(跳級(jí)), but you’ll have to       your friends. Would you say yes to your teacher?” She gave me a hug and asked me to think about it. I was puzzled. The question kept me     for the rest of the night I had said “yes” but for the first time, I realized the     decisions adults had to make.
For almost four years, my mother would call us from Brazil every day. Every evening I’d        wait for the phone to ring and then tell her every detail of my day. A phone call, however, could never replace her       and it was difficult not to feel lonely at times.
During my fourth-grade Christmas break, we flew to Rio to visit her. Looking at her large       apartment, I became       how lonely my mother must have been in Brazil herself. It was then     I started to appreciate the tough choices she had to make on       family and work.       difficult decisions, she used to tell me, you wouldn’t know whether you make the right choice, but you could always make the best out of the situation, with passion and a       attitude.
Back home , I       myself that what my mother could do, I could, too. If she        to live in Rio all by herself, I, too, could learn to be       . I learn how to take care of myself and set high but achievable    .
My mother is now back with us. But I will never forget what the       has really taught me. Sacrifices       in the end. The separation between us has proved to be       for me.
