Societies all over the world name places in similar ways. Quite often there is no official naming ceremony but places tend to be called names as points of reference by people. Then an organized body steps in and gives the place a name. Frequently it happens that a place has two names: One is named by the people and the other by the government. As in many areas, old habits died hard, and the place continues to be called by its unofficial name long after the meaning is lost.

Many roads and places in Singapore are named in order that the pioneers will be remembered by future generations. Thus we have names such as Stamford Road and Raffles Place. This is in keeping with traditions in many countries ---- in both the West and the East.

Another way of naming places is naming them after other places. Perhaps they were named to promote friendships between the two places or it could be that the people who used to live there were originally from the places that the roads were named after. The mystery is clearer when we see some of the roads named in former British bases. If you step into Selector Airbase you will see Piccadilly Circus ---- obviously named by some homesick Royal Air Force personnel.

Some places were named after the activities that used to go on at those places. Bras Basah Road is an interesting example, “Base Basah” means “wet rice” in Malay(馬來語). Now why would anyone want to name a road “Wet Rice Road”? The reason is simple. During the pioneering days, wet rice was laid out to dry along this road.

A few roads in Singapore are named by their shapes. There is “Circular Road” for one. Other roads may have part of their names to describe their shapes, like “Paya Lebar Crescent”. This road is called a crescent(月牙) because it begins on the main road, makes a crescent and comes back to join the main road again.

We learn from Paragraph 1 that _____.

A. the government is usually the first to name a place

B. a ceremony will be held when a place is named

C. many places tend to have more than one name

D. people prefer the place names given by the government

What does the underlined phrase “die hard” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

A. Change suddenly.                                  B. Change significantly.

C. Disappear mysteriously.                         D. Disappear very slowly.

Which of the following places is named after a person?

A. Raffles Place.                                       B. Selector Airbase.

C. Piccadilly Circus.                                  D. Paya Lebar Crescent.

Bras Basah Road is named _______.

A. after a person           B. after an activity  C. after a place       D. by its shape

The most detailed breakdown(分析) of ethnic and gender performance in national curriculum tests for 7, 11 and 14-year-olds shows that Chinese pupils do best in every subject at every age. Chinese and Indian pupils outperformed white British children in English tests for 11-year-olds. In all, 83% of Chinese students reached the required standard compared with 78% of Indian pupils and 75% of white UK pupils and only 65% of Bangladeshi children reaching level four, the standard that an 11-year-old should achieve.
While the overall results show the performance of every ethnic group at GCSE(中等教育普通證書) is improving, they do highlight a worrying trend for white British pupils. David Miliband, the minister for School Standards, said the results showed that while standards in secondary schools were rising, there was “a shocking gender gap between boys and girls”. He added: “58.2% of girls achieved five A to C grade passes at GCSE in 2003 compared with just 49.9% of boys, and white working-class boys are one of the lowest performing groups at 14.” According to researchers,” In the weeks leading up to GCSE unsupervised study leave at home in many areas has become the norm(慣例). They are left to their own devices.” Mr. Miliband is supporting a plan to persuade schools to drop study leave before GCSEs and replace it with structured revision in school.

The energy crisis (危機) has made people aware of how the careless use of the earth’s energy has brought the whole world to the edge of disaster. The over – development of motor transport, with its increase of more cars, more traveling, has contributed to the near – destruction of our cities and the pollution not only of local air but also of the earth’s atmosphere.

Our present situation is unlike natural disasters of the past. Worldwide energy use has brought us to a state where long – range planning is vital. What we need is not a continuation of our present serious state, which endangers the future of our country, our children, and our earth, but a movement forward in order to work rapidly and effectively on planetary problems.

This country has been falling back under the continuing exposures of loss of morality (道德) and the revelation (揭露) that lawbreaking has reached into the highest place in the land. There is a strong demand for morality to turn for the better and for some devotion that is vast enough and yet personal enough to enlist the devotion of all. In the past it has been only in a way in defense of their own country and their own benefits that people have been able to devote themselves wholeheartedly.

This is the first time that we have been asked to defend ourselves and what we hold dear in cooperation with all the other people of this planet, who share with us the same endangered air and the same endangered oceans. There is a common need to reassess our present course, to change that course and to employ new methods through which the world can survive. This is a priceless opportunity.

To grasp it, we need a widespread understanding of nature if the crisis we and the world are facing is no passing inconvenience, no by-product(副產(chǎn)品)of the ambitions of the oil – producing countries, no environmentalists’ only fears, no byproduct of any present system of government. What we face is the result of the invention of the last four hundred years. What we need is transformed life style. This new life style can flow directly from science and technology, but its acceptance depends on a sincere devotion to finding a higher quality of life for the world’s children and future generation.

1. Which of the following has nearly destroyed our cities?

A. The loss of beliefs and ideas.                        B. More of law – breaking.

C. Natural disasters in many areas.                     D.  The rapid growth of motors.

2. By comparing past problems with present ones, the author draws our attention to the        .

A. seriousness of this crisis                                B. ineffectiveness of laws

C. similarity of the past to the present          D. hopelessness of the situation

3. Which of the following is used as an example to show the loss of morality?

A. Disregard for law.                                        B. Lack of devotion.

C. Lack of understanding.                                 D. Destruction of cities.

4. The author wrote the passage in order to        .

A. make a recommendation for a transformed life style

B. limit ambitions of the people of the whole world

C. demand devotion to nature and future generation

D. encourage awareness of the decline of morality
