【題目】 Engineers have launched a huge garbage collection device to gather plastics floating in the Pacific Ocean between California and Hawaii. The plastic makes up what is called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It is the world’s largest spread of garbage, twice the size of the state of Texas.

The Organization Ocean Cleanup created the collection device. The group’s founder is Boyan Slat, a 24-year-old inventor from the Netherlands. When Slat was 16, he went diving in Mediterranean Sea and saw more plastic bags than fish. Since then, he has made up his mind to clean up the oceans.

He told the Associated Press that researchers with his organization have found plastic from the 1960s and 1970s among the material in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It contains an estimated 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic in total. Most of them float on the surface of the water, or are within a few meters of the surface.

Last Saturday, a ship pulling the pipe-shaped floating barrier left San Francisco for the Garbage Patch. The barrier, called the floater, is 600 meters across. Attached to it is a screen (篩子) that hangs three meters down in the water. The screen is designed to collect the plastic as it moves through the water. Sea animals can safely swim under the barrier. The cleanup system also comes with lights powered by the sun, cameras, and other special devices. Slat said this enabled the system to communicate its position at all times.

Shipping containers will hold all the plastic gathered, including bottles and fishing equipment. Slat said the containers were expected to be back on land within a year. Then the plastic will be recycled. And they will also study how the system performs in severe ocean conditions, including huge waves.

1How did Boyan Slat react to that dive in the Mediterranean Sea?

A.He showed a great interest in diving.

A.Most of its plastic is half a century old.

B.It covers almost the size of the state of Texas.

C.Altogether there are about 1.8 billion pieces of plastic.

D.The majority of its plastic floats on or near the surface.

3Why was a screen attached to the ship?

A.To power lights in the ship.B.To protect sea animals near it.

C.To tell the position of the ship.D.To collect plastic along the way.

4What is the text mainly about?

A.Approaches to removing garbage in oceans.

B.The problem of garbage in the Pacific Ocean.

C.A young man who does well in classifying garbage.

English perfectly shows the “network effects” of a global tongue: the more people use it, the more useful it is. Parents expect their children 1(master)English, which is encouraging the 2(grow)of private schooling. Education authorities are switching to English medium, in part to control the outflow(外流) of children into the private sector.

Teaching children in English is fine if that is 3 they speak at home and their parents are fluent 4 it. But that is not 5 case in most public and low-cost private schools. Children are taught in a language they don’t understand by teachers 6 English is poor. The children learn neither English nor anything else.

Research shows that children learn 7(much)when they are taught in their mother tongue than they do when they are taught in any other language. In a study of children in 12 schools in Cameroon last month, those taught in Kom 8(do)better than those taught in English in all subjects.

English should be an important subject at school, but not 9(necessary)the language of instruction. Rather than switching to English-medium teaching, governments fearful of 10(lose) custom (光顧) to the private sector should look at the many possible ways of improving public schools.

【題目】 My daughter Kelly is a cautious person. She needs to warm up to situations, and is hesitant to try new things. But this has been a year of firsts for my girl that has filled her with a new sense of confidence. This year she moved to lap lane in swimming where she was preparing for a swim team. This year she learned to ride a bike without training wheels. And this year she completed her first kids’ triathlon (三項(xiàng)全能).

On Saturday, with a thunderstorm coming soon and my son’s birthday party later in the day, we all went out in the dark of the morning for Kelly to participate in her first triathlon. We practiced transitions from swim to bike to run with her, we got all the equipment she’d need, and we kept talking about the race. But as we waited the two hours for the older kids to finish before her turn, she held my leg a little harder and told me she loved me a few too many times. She was nervous but trying to keep it together.

And then it was her turn. From the second she jumped into the water, my heart soared. My daughter transformed into the most confident human being I had ever seen. She dominated that swim, crushed that bike ride and ran to the finish with the biggest smile on her face.

I can honestly say that I never felt so proud of someone in my entire life. It wasn’t because she did a sport or anything like that. It was because she was afraid of something and conquered that fear with confidence and a fire I hadn’t seen before.

I kept looking at her with smile. She might be wearing the finalist medal but I felt like I won that day. I won the chance to see my girl shine.

A.The race began in the early morning.

2Seeing Kelly’s performance in the race, the author felt_________.

A.worried and hesitantB.excited and proud

C.anxious and uneasyD.curious and concerned

A.to succeed in dealing with or control something

B.to take control of an area and its people by force

C.to become very popular or successful in a place

D.to defeat someone especially in a competition

4In the ending paragraphs the author felt like “I won that day” because Kelly___________.

A.expressed love to herB.won the gold medal

C.overcame the fearD.took part in the sport
