  New York-born Billy Joel was encouraged by his father to learn the piano from the age of four. He played in various local groups before he turned solo, releasing (發(fā)行) the first album “Cold Spring Harbor” in 1972. But business problems drove him down to California where he performed in bar sand hotels under the name Billy Martin. A breakthrough crone when Columbia records signed him and released “The Piano Man” album in 1973, the title track becoming his first hit single.
