Long ago people used bells more than they do today. The postmen was used to ring a hand bell when they delivered letters. Fire engines had bells instead sirens(警笛). People which sold things came past houses, rang a bell and shouting what was for sale. In many country, bells were hung around the necks of animals. The bells help owners find lost cows or sheep. Today, at India, animals still wear bells. Now bells are used more because various modern sound-makers have taken its place. Now people try to keep the old bells in schools and churches so that they won’t lose their beautifully sounds forever.

One day when I was 5, my mother criticized me for not finishing my rice and I got angry. I wanted to play outside and not to be made to finish eating my old rice. In my angry motion to open the screen door (紗門) with my foot, I kicked back about a 12-inch part of the lower left hand corner of the new screen door. But I had no regret, for I was happy to be playing in the backyard with my toys.

Today, I know if my child had done what I did, I would have criticized my child, and told him about how expensive this new screen door was, and I would have delivered a spanking (打屁股) for it. But my parents never said a word. They left the corner of the screen door pushed out, creating an opening, a crack in the defense against unwanted insects.

For years, every time I saw that corner of the screen, it would remind me of my mistake from time to time. For years, I knew that everyone in my family would see that hole and remember who did it. For years, every time I saw a fly buzzing in the kitchen, I would wonder if it came in through the hole that I had created with my angry foot. I would wonder if my family members were thinking the same thing, silently blaming me every time a flying insect entered our home, making life more terrible for us all. My parents taught me a valuable lesson, one that a spanking or stern (嚴厲的) words perhaps could not deliver. Their silent punishment for what I had done delivered a hundred stern messages to me. Above all, it has helped me become a more patient person and not burst out so easily.

1.When the author damaged the door, his parents _______.

A. scolded him for what he had done B. left the door unrepaired

C. told him how expensive it was D. gave him a spanking

2.How did the author feel every time he saw the damaged door?

A. He felt ashamed of his uncontrolled anger at that time.

B. He found that his family members no longer liked him.

C. He found it destroyed the happy atmosphere at his home.

D. He felt he had to work hard to make up for (彌補) the damage.

3.The experience may cause the author _______.

A. to hide his anger away from others

B. not to go against his parents’ will

C. to have a better control of himself

D. not to make mistakes in the future

4.What of the following is the main idea of this passage?

A. Adults should ignore their children’s bad behavior.

B. Parents shouldn’t educate their children.

C. What is the best way to become a more patient person?

D. Silent punishment may have a better effect on educating people.

A recent study led by researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS) has found a clear link between the color of a taxi and its accident rate. An analysis of 36 months of detailed taxi, driver and accident data from two fleets of yellow and blue taxis in Singapore suggested that yellow taxis have fewer accidents than blue taxis. The higher visibility (能見度) of yellow makes it less difficult for drivers to avoid getting into accidents with yellow taxis, leading to a lower accident rate.

The study was led by Prof Ho. To test whether there was a relationship between the color of a taxi and the number of accidents the taxi had, the research team analysed data collected by the largest taxi company in Singapore. The researchers found that yellow taxis have about 6. 1 fewer accidents per 1,000 taxis per month.

They also studied the economic effect of changing the color of the entire fleet of taxis to yellow. The Singapore taxi company involved in the study owns about 16,700 taxis in a ratio (比例) of one yellow to three blue taxis. If a commercial decision is made to switch from blue to yellow taxis, 76. 6 fewer accidents will occur per month or 917 fewer accidents per year.

Assuming an average repair cost of $1,000 per car and a downtime of six days, the color of all taxis to yellow could produce an annual saving of $2 million.

“We are eager to continue to validate (證實) the findings of our study by looking at the use of yellow in other types of public transport, such as school buses. For example, we hope to compare the accident rates of yellow school buses against those of other colors to find out if yellow is indeed a safer color for school buses. Besides, we’ re also interested to look at private-hire vehicles and do a comparison of the accident rates of vehicles that are of different colors explained Prof Ho.

1.Why do yellow taxis result in fewer accidents?

A. Because yellow signals a warning of danger.

B. Because yellow can be seen more easily.

C. Because drivers tend to he more careful in yellow taxis.

D. Because people act more quickly in yellow surroundings.

2.What’ s Prof Ho’s study based on?

A. Physical risks taxi passengers experience.

B. The economic effect of changing taxi color.

C. Personal reports from taxi drivers worldwide.

D. Data from Singapore's largest taxi company.

3.What do Prof Ho’s words in the last paragraph suggest?

A. School buses should be painted yellow.

B. Their findings are worth popularizing.

C. Their study will be furthered.

D. Yellow should be widely used in public transport,

4.What can be the best title for the text?

A. Safer to ride in yellow taxis B. Caution: yellow taxis ahead

C. Why are yellow Taxis preferred? D. How can colors help prevent accidents?

Make Your Brain Smarter

You know that eating a proper diet and getting plenty of exercise help make your body healthy and strong. But did you know that there are ways to make your brain healthier and smarter? Studies show that when the brain is forced to do something new, it creates new neural (神經(jīng)的) pathways. 1.

● Limit your TV viewing.

Watching an average TV show requires very little brain power and brings the same result as neglecting (忽視) physical exercise. 2. If you watch TV, choose something educational and informative.

● Use your non-dominant (非支配的) hand.

If you are right-handed, use your left hand for everyday activities, or use your right hand if you are left-handed. Doing familiar things in a new way will cause your brain to create new neural networks. Brushing our teeth is something we do daily. 3. But maybe we should. Experts suggest that we can force the brain to work by changing things up and working with our non-dominant hand. So the next time you brush your teeth, open the tube, apply your toothpaste and brush with the opposite hand.

4.

Jump in the shower and shut your eyes. Even if you drop the soap—that’s okay. 5.Searching for the soap while feeling the textures (質(zhì)地) with your eyes closed works. Using your fingers to make fine distinctions between objects or textures can reconnect the brain areas involved in touch, suggests Larry Katz, a professor of neurobiology at Duke University Medical Center and author.

A. Shower with your eyes closed.

B. Smart people rarely follow a set pattern.

C. The more pathways you have, the smarter you will be.

D. Use your different senses.

E. We really don’t put that much thought into it.

F. Put your brain to best use.

G. Your brain will become weak just as your muscles do.
