The teaching hospital is one associated with a medical school. Teaching hospitals are large, with a range of from 300 to 200 beds. These hospitals always have interns(實習醫(yī)師) and residents(住院醫(yī)師) and additionally have medical students on the hospital wards. They have superb technical resources, and it is here that the most extraordinary events of medicine take place. Open-heart surgery, transplantation of kidneys, elaborate(精致的) nurseries for the newborn, support for management of rare blood diseases, and other wonderful achievements are all available here. Dozens of people may be concerned with the well-being of a particular patient. Important medical decisions are thoroughly discussed, presented at conferences, and reviewed by many personnel.

On the other hand, the quality of personal relationships at teaching hospitals is variable. Many patients feel that they are treated in an impersonal way, and that their laboratory tests receive more attention that their human and social problems. Since these institutions are on the frontier of medicine, there is a tendency to emphasize the new and elaborate procedures, when older and more modest ones might have served as well. With the inexperience of some members of the care team, there is a tendency to order more laboratory tests than what would have been ordered for the same condition in a private hospital. The sick patients are sometimes confused by having to relate to a large number of doctors and students. Medical educators are concerned with such criticisms and have to correct some of the problems. However, some excesses(超額) of technological medicine still occur in these institutions.

  A. its first-class personnel are a guarantee of excellent medical care

The passage implies that         .

  A. by specialists in charge of the case

  B. by doctors and students together

  C. on some special and important occasions

 D. through collective efforts and serious review

The problem that still bothers teaching hospitals frequently is         .

  A. the inadequate patient care caused by irresponsible nurses.

  D. the inconvenience caused by the presence of medical students

At present, in many American cities especially, many teachers in the public schools say they are underpaid. They point to jobs such as secretary or truck driver, which often pay more to start than that of a teacher. In many other fields, such as law, medicine, computer science, a beginning worker may make more than a teacher who has taught for several years.

Teaching has never been a profession that attracted people interested in high salaries. It is by history a profession that has provided rewards in addition to money—the satisfaction of sharing knowledge, of influencing others, of guiding young people. But in the past several years, there are more difficulties in teaching, for many, than there are rewards.

Unruly students, especially in big cities, large classes and a lack of support from the public in terms of money and understanding have led many public school teachers to leave the profession.

As a result, many of the best students, who would have chosen teaching as their life career in the past, are going into other fields.

Another reason for this change in teacher candidates is the changing status of women in the United States. Until the late 1960s and 1970s, one of the most popular choices for women was teaching. But as other professions, such as law and medicine opened up to women, women stopped pouring into teacher training programs. Thus, a major pool of excellent candidates for the teaching profession dwindled.

Bit by bit government officials and others realized that the status of the teacher had suffered. They talked about change. But the change in a vast society like the United States is not easy. People’s attitudes have formed over many years, and sometimes change takes many years.

The underlined word “that” in Paragraph 1 refers to “      ”.

       A.money      B.job       C.secretary D.truck driver

What is the present situation of the teaching?

A.Teachers work harder and get underpaid.

B.Teachers have no opportunities to work in other fields.

C.Teaching can attract best students to work as a teacher.

D.Teaching can provide rewards as well as high salaries.

Many public school teachers turn to other professions because        .

A.the government doesn’t financially support them

B.they have to work longer hours than a lawyer

C.their students refuse to listen to them

The author believes that change in teachers’ status in the United States       .

       A.is not great             B.is impossible

       C.influences people’s attitude            D.needs time

Football is, I believe, the most popular game in England: one has only to go to the important matches to see this. Rich and poor, young and old, one can see them all there, shouting for one side or the other.
To a stranger, one of the most surprising things about football in England is the great knowledge of the game which even the smallest boy seems to have. He can tell you the names of the players in most of the important teams. He will tell you who he expects will win such a match, and his opinion is usually as good as that of men three or four times his age.
Most schools in England take football seriously-much more seriously than nearly all European schools, where lessons are all very important and games are left for the children themselves. In England it is believed that education is not only a matter filling a boy’s mind with facts in the classroom: education also means the training of character; and one of the best ways of training character is by means of games, especially team games; where a boy or girl has to learn to work with others for his or her team, instead of working for oneself alone. The school therefore plans games and matches for its students. Football is a good team game. It is good both for the body and the mind. That’s why it is every school’s game in England.

F. Making sure of the requirements of teaching abroad.

【小題1】______Teaching English to adult learners is a challenging thing. But learning how to teach English to be-ginners could be much more challenging especially if you’re teaching abroad. There are special considerations that you’ll have to keep in mind, and a little more patience to spare.
【小題2】_______When you teach any foreign language to young learners, it means that you are not only going to have to teach the subject as you would in a typical classroom. Because of the age of the learners, you will have to constantly keep them interested. Children have short attention span, so you have to give extra effort to keep their attention to the subject.
【小題3】________As much as it is important to teach the language to your learners, it is also important that you know they are willing to learn and that they enjoy your classes. If you make your classes fun and full of activities and other games that promote learning and communication, the actual teaching part will be a piece of cake. Your students will always look forward to the next lesson, and they’ll look at learning English as a fun experience.
【小題4】________If you teach English abroad, the number of things to consider is increased. For one thing, you will have to use the teaching methods that are accepted by a foreign audience. You will have to learn the culture of the country. Naturally, you will also have to adjust to the life of living abroad.
【小題5】________Of course, if you would like to teach English abroad, there might be additional tests and certificates that will be required of you. You may be required to take TOEFL and take up ESL. To be sure of all the requirements, make sure that you discuss all of these during the application process early on.
