For that idea kicking around Clancy’S head since 1988,the U.S.Patent Office this month(June 2006)awarded the 52-year-old Mansfield,Ohio, man a patent. Its number:7037243.What makes this invention work is the moving weights inside the handles. They let you have the feel of a rope moving,Clancy said.
But why jump rope without a rope?
It’s perfect for the clumsy, Clancy said.”If you are still jumping, you’re still using your legs,as well as your alms.and giving exercise to the cardiovascular(心血管).You just don’t have to worry about tripping on the rope.”
It is also good for mental institutions and prisons where people might use rope to kill themselves, said Clancy, who serves as a laundry worker in a state prison. And low ceiling fans aren’t dangerous any more,he said.
The idea isn’t all that crazy.said Mike Ernst,a professor of kinesiology(運動機能學)at California State University in Dominguez Hills.
The more he thought about it,the more Ernst said he could see the benefit, adding that,“ Do you need to jump with a rope? You don’t,”Ernst said.” But I wouldn’t buy the product,I can tell you that.I'm not a fool.”
High-tech handles aren’t needed. You could even use toilet paper holders,Ernst said.On second thought,he wondered if he could patent that idea.

I had been to several doctors as a child, but I have a special place in my heart for Dr. Vincent. He was a Pediatric Cardiologist at UCLA back in 1971 who saved my life. I was eight years old at the time with a severe heart problem and I needed heart surgery. My Mom did not have the money, and without the surgery there was a real good chance I would not live to be thirteen years old. After contacting several organizations Dr. Vincent was able to get financial help for me through United Way, a Crippled Children’s Organization.
Dr. Vincent was a handsome man; he was also very gentle and caring. I remember being in the hospital for an Angiogram test, and during the procedure I was crying terribly, so the medical staff called in Dr. Vincent to calm me down, and he was able to comfort me when no one else could. Then the time came for me to have heart surgery; there was a fifty- percent chance that I would not make it through the surgery because it was experimental. At the time I was only the second or third person to have this procedure done. I was absolutely terrified, and again Dr. Vincent reassured me he would see to it that everything would be all right.
I had a lot of confidence and trust in Dr. Vincent; He came to see me after the surgery, which was extremely painful but very successful, and brought me a stuffed animal. I was so surprised to get this gift from Dr. Vincent; I gave him a hug. I guess Dr. Vincent must have known I was feeling very lonely and scared. You see, I had no family or friends visit me while I was in the hospital except for my Mom, and I am not sure why. I do know one thing; I had a wonderful doctor who took the time to help a scared little girl who felt all alone.
This was twenty eight years ago, so wherever you are Dr. Vincent, I want to thank you for not only saving my life, but you helped me live a normal productive life, and for showing me that you truly cared, for that I will be eternally grateful to you.

C
I have been employed by a charity organization for less than a year now and I have the privilege of finding foster homes for abandoned children. It has always been my dream to work with adopted children because I myself was an adopted child.
I was born in California in September of 1976 and was adopted in Ohio in March of 1977. I have no memory of being told that I was adopted, however, I have always known. I have been told that I was wanted and I was special.
Even though my parents provided me with lots of love, I was always annoyed by the questions about my origin and my feeling of being unwanted. I constantly scanned every crowd I was in for another human that looked like me or laughed like me.
I began searching for my birthparents in 1999 and I imagined every possible scene of my birth family.
I went to a local agency for support and five days later I met my birth mother. The story unfolded. She flew me to Los Angeles the next day and I spent the weekend connecting with another person who looked just like me. We have had a worthwhile relationship over the past years although she could not give me any information about my birth father.
In June of last year a member of my birth father’s family contacted me. Now, he and I are just beginning to get to know what it is like to be a birth child, Without the support of my parents who raised me I would have never experienced the feeling of being truly wanted accepted. For that, I am forever grateful.
