It was October in 1982. A friend had business dealings in the city of Reno, Nevada. I was asked to her on an overnight trip. While she conducted her , I was wandering down Virginia street. I headed into a most sunset. I had an to speak to someone on the street to share that beauty, I couldn't make eye contact with anyone. It seemed everyone was walking along , looking at their feet.
I took the next-best action. I into a department store and asked the lady behind the counter if she could come for just a minute. She looked at me I were from some other planet and said, "well…”
When she got outside I said to her, “Just look at that sunset! Nobody out here was looking at it and I just wanted to it with someone." For a few seconds we just looked. Then I said, "God's in his heaven and is right with the world." I her for coming out to see it; she went back inside and I left. It felt good to share the beauty.
Four years later I had come to the of a twenty-year marriage. I was alone and on my own for the first time in my life and lived in a trailer park(活動住屋) was mainly for the poor.
One day I picked up a Unity Magazine and read an article about a woman who had been in circumstances. She had come to the end of a marriage, moved to a community, and the only job she could find was one she disliked: sales lady in a department store. We had a lot .
Then something happened to her, which everything. She said a woman ran into her department store and asked her to step outside to look at a . The woman had said, "God's in his heaven and all's right with the world." She had the truth in that statement and she turned her life around from that moment on.

In spring, you may have seen white foam(泡沫) on a green tree or other plants. As a matter of fact, the foam is where young spittlebugs(吹沫蟲) live. These insects are protected by the foam, and they usually don’t do much harm to the plants.
As we all know, in late summer, a mother spittlebug lays her eggs on the plant. The babies will hatch(孵化) in spring. After they come to the new world, they begin to eat juice from the plant. The babies eat more juice than their bodies need for food. The extra juice mixes with a special waste that the spittlebugs produce. When this fluid(液體) is released, it mixes with the air, forming bubbly foam.
What is so great about having a foam home? The space inside is so wet that it can keep the bugs’ soft bodies from drying out. And the foam tastes bad, so it keeps away most animals that would eat the bugs. Some birds will reach their heads through the foam to find the bugs. Wasps and ants might eat them, too. But most of the bugs stay safe inside the foam.
Once the bugs have grown into adults, they stop making foam. They leave their homes and jump from plant to plant in search of food. The adults look a little like tiny frogs. For this reason they are also called froghoppers.
If you see some foam on a plant, you might want to take a careful look inside. Gently push some of the foam aside with a small stick. Deep inside you may see a few insects eating plant juice. They might also be making more foam. Be sure to push the foam back after a moment to cover the insects and keep them safe. Soon the spittlebugs will grow up and leave their foam home. They will join the other insects in the grassland.
1.The eggs of spittlebugs_____.
A. are laid in late spring
B. have to pull through a winter before they hatch
C. are protected by mother spittlebugs all the time
D. will be eaten by ants
2.According to the passage, the white foam_____.
A. does much harm to the plant
B. protects the plant from being harmed
C. is where a mother spittlebug is living
D. is plant juice mixed with spittlebugs’ waste and the air
3.Which of the following is a function of a foam home?
A. Protecting the bugs from being eaten.
B. Helping the bugs find food.
C. Providing enough drinking water for the bugs.
D. Keeping the plant from drying out.
4.After the spittlebugs grow into adults, they______.
A. continue to make foam
B. take on a different look
C. begin to eat tiny frogs
D. begin to do harm to plants

We know more about the surface of the planet Mars than we know about what is at the bottom of Earth’s oceans.
Until recently, scientists had mapped only about 20 percent of the sea floor. But our knowledge of the deep seas is changing because of information from satellites. Scientists have produced a new map that provides a detailed picture of the oceans. The map is expected to help oceanographers, industry and governments.
The new map is twice as detailed as the map made 20 years ago. David Sandwell is a geophysics professor at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California. He and other scientists worked on the mapping project. He says they turned to space to look deeper into the ocean. He spoke to VOA on SKYPE.
“The way we’re doing that is to use a satellite altimeter (高度計), a radar to map the topography (地貌) of the ocean surface. Now that seems sort of strange that you’d map the topography of the ocean surface when you really want to get at the sea floor. But, the ocean surface topography has these bumps and dips due to gravitational effects that mimic what’s on the sea floor.”
The scientists collected and studied information from two satellites. Some of the data came from the European Space Agency’s Cryo-2 satellite. It was placed in Earth’s orbit to watch sea ice. The other satellite is the American space agency’s Jason-1. It is studying the surface of the oceans. Scientists combined the satellite data with images gathered by sonar ( 聲吶:利用聲波探測水下物體的裝置或系統(tǒng)) equipment on ships. Sonar works by sending sound waves through the water. When the sound waves hit an object, its presence is confirmed.
“That enables us to look at smaller-scale features and also features that are buried by sediments in the ocean basins.”
The new map shows the sea floor as it has never been seen before. It shows thousands of underwater mountains and places where continents pulled apart. It shows where earthquakes were active many years ago. They all are buried deep underneath the ocean floor.
In one place, three mountain ridges join at the same area. Huge tectonic (構(gòu)造的) plates can be seen clearly there.
1.The passage is likely to _____.
A. be an advertisement B. appear on VOA
C. make a comment on radar D. appear on SKYPE
2.What will be mentioned in the following paragraph, according to the last paragraph? _____.
A. The detailed information about the place.
B. The more important thing in the ocean.
C. The things buried in the ocean.
D. Scientists told SKYPE they will explore at the same area.
3.Scientists collected and studied information by _____.
A. the European Space Agency’s Cryo-2 satellite
B. the American space agency’s Jason-1
C. sonar equipment on ships
D. the Cryo-2 and the Jason-1
4. What’s the best title of the passage? _____.
A. Scientists Create New Maps of Ocean Floor
B. Scientists Knows More Oceans Than Mars
C. Oceans Will Provide Us With Maps
D. People Knows Easily About Mars

The behaviour of a building’s users may be at least as important as its design when it comes to energy use, according to new research from the UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC). The UK promises to reduce its carbon emissions (排放)by 80 percent by 2050, part of which will be achieved by all new homes being zero-carbon by 2016. But this report shows that sustainable building design on its own — though extremely important — is not enough to achieve such reductions: the behaviour of the people using the building has to change too.
The study suggests that the ways that people use and live in their homes have been largely ignored by existing efforts to improve energy efficiency, which instead focus on architectural and technological developments.
‘Technology is going to assist but it is not going to do everything,’ explains Katy Janda, a UKERC senior researcher, ‘consumption patterns of building users can defeat the most careful design.’ In other words, old habits die hard, even in the best-designed eco-home.
Another part of the problem is information. Households and bill-payers don’t have the knowledge they need to change their energy-use habits. Without specific information, it’s hard to estimate the costs and benefits of making different choices. Feedback (反饋) facilities, like smart meters and energy monitors, could help bridge this information gap by helping people see how changing their behaviour directly affects their energy use; some studies have shown that households can achieve up to 15 percent energy savings using smart meters.
Social science research has added a further dimension (方面),suggesting that individuals’ behaviour in the home can be personal and cannot be predicted —whether people throw open their windows rather than turn down the thermostat (恒溫器) , for example.
Janda argues that education is the key. She calls for a focused programme to teach people about buildings and their own behaviour in them.
1.As to energy use, the new research from UKERC stresses the importance of________.
A. zero-carbon homes
B. the behaviour of building users
C. sustainable building design
D. the reduction of carbon emissions
2.The underlined word “which” in Paragraph 2 refers to “________.”
A. the ways B. their homes

A. The importance of changing building users’ habits.
B. The necessity of making a careful building design.
C. The variety of consumption patterns of building users.
D. The role of technology in improving energy efficiency.
4.The information gap in energy use _______.
A. can be bridged by feedback facilities
B. affects the study on energy monitors
C. brings about problems for smart meters
D. will be caused by building users’ old habits
5.What does the dimension added by social science research suggest?
A. The social science research is to be furthered.
B. The education programme is under discussion.
C. The behaviour of building users is unpredictable.
D. The behaviour preference of building users is similar.
