【題目】The Winner’s Guide to Success

Do you know what makes people successful? To find out the answers, an American scholar recently visited some of the most successful people in America. 【1】

Be responsible for yourself.

Sometimes you may want to blame others for your failure to get ahead. In fact, when you say someone or something outside of yourself is stopping you from making success, you are giving away your own power. _2

Write a plan.

It is very difficult trying to get what you want without a good plan. It is just like trying to drive through strange roads to a city far away. _【3 Without this “map”, you may waste your time, money and also your energy; while with the “map” you’ll enjoy the “trip” and get what you want in the shortest possible time.

_4

Nothing great is easy to get. So you must be ready to work hard — even harder than you have ever done. If you are not willing to pay the price, you won’t get anything valuable.

Never give up.

__5 When you are doing something, you must tell yourself again and again: Giving up is worse than failure because failure can be the mother of success, but giving up means the death of hope.

A. A good plan is like a map to you.

B. It seems to us that everyone knows this. But it is easier said than done.

C. Some people achieve success much later in life because they didn’t work harder earlier.

D. You are saying you have more control over my life than I do.

E. Someone else’s opinion of you doesn’t have to become your reality.

F. Be willing to pay the price.

G. Here are some keys to success that they give.

【答案】

【4】F 此空是一個小標(biāo)題。根據(jù)下文Nothing great is easy to get. So you must be ready to work hard — even harder than you have ever done.可知,想成功不是那么容易,你一定要準(zhǔn)備努力工作——甚至比以前更努力。故F項Be willing to pay the price.愿意付出代價。符合上下文語境

【題目】On a Saturday night at home while relaxing with friends, a dog showed up at the house. In an attempt to find the legal owner and return the dog, we knocked on the door of the legal owner and an old man opened the door. This was the start of an interesting week.

The old man sat down, made himself at home, and gifted us the dog. After a brief visit, he left, and we were now the proud owners of this dog. It takes experience and knowledge to know that our lifestyle can’t satisfy the needs of this dog; the owner that gifted us the dog was mismatched for him as well.

Three attempts to return the dog to his old owner failed. (I think he was avoiding us.) Because our lifestyle didn’t allow us to give this poor dog the attention he needed, he disturbed the neighbors. They got involved. After we shared the story, they gained a new perspective and wisely stepped in to help us find a solution.

One week later it was decided that dog would be picked up from us by the old neighbor. He would then return it to the previous owner who was more equipped to care for it.

When faced with unexpected challenges in life, it helps to see everyone’s perspective. We have to look at one another’s perspective to solve a problem with honesty, experience and knowledge. That’s the sign of a leader. Although the old neighbor typically has little to do with leadership, it did bring a neighborhood together to understand one another and work as a team to solve a problem.

【1】Why was the dog taken to the author’s home?

A. To find food to eat.

B. To seek a proper owner.

C. The author was friendly to him.

D. The old man couldn’t feed him.

【2】What did the author find after he was gifted with the dog?

A. He didn’t like the dog at all.

B. He could deal with dog easily.

C. The old neighbor was cheating him.

D. It was unsuitable for him to keep the dog.

【3】What does the author intend to stress in the text?

A. The value of team spirit.

B. The smartness of the old neighbor.

C. The importance of leadership skills.

D. The need for calmness in front of challenges.

Money Matters

Parents should help their children understand money. 【1】 So you may start talking about money when your child shows an interest in buying things, candy or toys, for example.

1. The basic function of money

Begin explaining the basic function of money by showing how people trade money for goods or services. It is important to show your child how money is traded for the things he wants to have. If he wants to have a toy, give him the money and let him hand the money to the cashier(收銀員). 2 When your child grows a bit older and understands the basic function of money, you can start explaining more complex (復(fù)雜的) ways of using money.

2. Money lessons

Approach money lessons with openness and honesty. 3 If you must say NO to a child’s request to spend money, explain, “You have enough toy cars for now.” Or, if the request is for many different things, say, “You have to make a choice between this toy and that toy.”

3. 4

Begin at the grocery store(雜貨店). Pick out two similar brands(商標(biāo)) of a product—a name-brand butter and a generic (無商標(biāo)產(chǎn)品), for example. You can show your child how to make choices between different brands of a product so that you can save money. 5 If he chooses the cheaper brand, allow him to buy another one with the money saved. Later, you may explain how the more expensive choice leaves less money for buying others.

A. Talk about how the money bought the thing after you leave the toy store.

B. The value of money

C. The best time to teach a child anything about money is when he shows an interest

D. Permit the child to choose between them

E. Ask yourself what things that cost money are most important to you

F. Tell your child why he can or can’t have certain things

History is a record of what has happened in the past. 【1】 The really fascinating thing is that much of history has been repeated time and again. It allows us to learn from the past, both the mistakes made and the successes achieved.
