　　One afternoon, Tim, my son, came home from school with a puzzled look on his face．I asked him what was the matter and he said, “Are all the people the same even though their skin colors are different?” I thought for a moment, then said, “I’ll explain．” I put apples of different colors on the table：first a red apple, then a green apple and at last a yellow apple．I looked at Tim．

　　“Tim, people are just like apples．They come in all different colors, shapes and sizes．See, some of the apples have been bumped(碰撞)and bruised(擦傷)．On the outside, they may not even look as delicious as the others．” As I was talking, Tim was checking each apple carefully．

　　Then, I took each of the apples and peeled them, putting them back on the table, but in a different place．

　　“OK, Tim, tell me which one is the red apple, the green apple and the yellow apple．”

　　Tim said, “I can’t．They all look the same now．”

　　“Now taste each of them．See if that helps you find out which one is which．”

　　Tim did so, and then a big smile came across his face．“People are just like apples! They are all different, but if you take off the outside, they’re quite the same inside．”

　　Now I see Tim has already understood me and I don’t need to say or do anything else．

　　From then on, when I help myself to an apple, it tastes a little sweeter than before．

Yasuda is 95 years old. Looking for easier ways to search the Web and send email, he bought Apple’s iPad. The company has sold 3.27 million iPads since they entered the market in April. It’s probably a market where Apple has least entered, ” Cordwell says. Senior users are “a key source of growth for them in the future.”

Seniors make up about 22 percent of the population in Japan. They may prove that seniors are willing to accept the iPad. Besides the customer group under 30, they spend more than any other group in the country, according to a report. Motoo Kitamura, 78, a former gas salesman, bought an iPad to help him communicate with his 2-year-old grandson and prevent him from experiencing some of the mental problems that sometimes come with getting older. “Trying new things like that is good mental exercise,” he says.

A report by the Consumer Electronics Association says electronics are among the most popular gifts being bought this holiday season. 

    Jim Barry is a spokesman for the Consumer Electronics Association. He says the CEA study found that electronics represent three of the top five things on its "holiday gift wish list" this year.

JIM BARRY: "Notebook computers are at the top, followed by iPads and then e-readers. IPad is a touch-screen tablet computer and that's really the big player in that category."

The computer company Apple began selling its small, touch-screen computers in April.   People use the touch-screen computers to surf the Web, write e-mails, watch movies and read books. Since the iPad's release earlier this year, several other companies have come out with their own tablet computers just in time for Christmas.

A report from the e-Marketer research group predicts that worldwide, tablet sales will reach more than eighty-one million in two thousand twelve. Still, Jim Barry says these devices are facing tough competition this year from another Christmas favorite.

JIM BARRY: "Another hot category right behind that are the e-readers. So you can read on an iPad or a touch-screen tablet, but the e-book readers are less expensive. The Kindle is the market leader there, from Amazon. But you also have the Nook from Barnes and Noble and the e-reader from Sony. And you have more and more of those e-readers coming into the market as well."

The Consumer Electronics Association report found that iPod music players are also in high demand this holiday season.  

But not all of the things on the holiday gift wish list involved electronics. Clothes, cars and motorcycles also made the list. So did family togetherness and good health. And the one thing that people wanted most?

JIM BARRY: "At the top of the list was peace and happiness."
