This is time of year when we think about giving and receiving presents. Can you find a little extra to give? On this page we suggest a few organizations you might like to help.
Littleton Children’s Home
We don’t want your money, but children’s toys, books and clothes in good condition would be very welcome. Also — we are looking for friendly families who would take our children into their homes for a few hours or days as guests. You have so much—will you share it?
Phone Sister Thomas on 55671.
Children’s Hospice
We look after a small number of very sick children. This important work needs skill and love. We cannot continue without gifts of money to pay for more nursing staff. We also need story books and toys suitable for quiet games.
Please contact The Secretary, Little Children’s Hospice, Newby Road.
Street Food
In the winter weather, it’s no fun being homeless. It’s even worse if you’re hungry. We give hot food to at least fifty people every night. It’s hard work, but necessary. Can you come and help? If not, can you find a little money? We use a very old kitchen, and we urgently need some new saucepans. Money for new ones would be most welcome indeed.
Contact Street Food, c/o Mary’s House, Elming Way. Littleton Phone 27713.
Littleton Youth Club
Have you got an unwanted chair?—a record player?—a pot of paint? Because we can use them! We want to get to work on our meeting room!
Please phone 66231 and we’ll be happy to collect anything you can give us.
Thank you!
The Night Shelter
We offer a warm bed for the night to anyone who has nowhere to go. We rent the former Commercial Hotel on Green Street. Although it is not expensive, we never seem to have quite enough money. Can you let us have a few pounds? Any amount, however small, will be such a help.

When computer salesman Li Guang and his girlfriend Huang Minxia saw on TV the destruction caused by the unexpected earthquake, they quickly filled their car with bottled water and instant noodles and drove more than 160 miles to lend a hand.
“It’s a small car,but we just wanted to help,” said Li,from Chongqing,a city next to the hardest-hit Sichuan province.
Donations (捐贈(zèng)) are flooding in,more money than charities (慈善) in China collected all of last year, and so are volunteers.
In the week since the quake, donations have totaled $1.3 billion—85 percent raised within China.
Many, like Li,are taking advantage of growing private car ownership and a new, expanding highway system to join the line of government and army assistance toward the epicenter.
Across the disaster region, thousands of cars decorated with large handwritten signs—“Hardship comes from one direction, help comes from everywhere” and “For the people, for the Beijing Olympics”—were coming from as far as the capital,Beijing, more than 900 miles away.
Private cars crowded so thickly on roads that the police set up donation drop-off points outside cities and towns to clear the way for army and government assistance.People living in tents along the roads posted handwritten signs asking for urgently needed items—water, rice, vegetables.Cars paused to hand out a box or two and then drove on.
Instead of waiting for government-organized charity drives, people quickly acted on their own.Bank account (銀行賬戶) numbers for making earthquake donations flashed on Web logs and mobile phones.Blood donation centers were overwhelmed (使應(yīng)接不暇) by offers and began asking citizens to register (登記) in advance.
“People are really united this time, and they’re acting on their own without waiting to be asked. It sounds corny, but we’re taught in schools and from our parents about helping others,” said Ge Jian, the company’s general manager.
1.What did Li Guang and his girlfriend Huang Minxia intend to do soon after the earthquake?( )
A.They intended to help the victims in the quake-hit areas.
B.They were on the way to a pleasant journey in Sichuan.
C.They were told to do something for the disaster.
D.They wanted to find their friends in the epicenter.
2.What does the underlined word “corny” most probably mean?( )
A.Out of date. B.Heart-broken.
C.Funny. D.Disappointing.
3.According to the passage, all the following statements are true EXCEPT .
A.The good road system made it possible for more private car owners to rush to help.
B.The local people in the quake zone were short of food and drinks.
C.More money was collected from overseas than within China for the earthquake.
D.People across China were taking active part in the rescue work.
4.Why did Blood donation centers advise people to register ahead of time?( )
A.Because they were expecting more money rather than blood.
B.Because they had collected enough blood for the disaster.
C.Because they were ready to go to the epicenter and they were much too busy.
D.Because too many people were offering to donate blood.

As an English teacher,I’ve been lucky enough to travel to many countries all over the world.I’ve seen people celebrate everything from the arrival of new babies to the delivery of new cars.I’ve attended weddings, parties and religious celebrations in countries such as Argentina and Japan, and I’ve noticed that gold—the metal or the colour of it—is always part of cultural events, traditions and celebrations.
It makes me wonder:Why do people love gold?
For some people, gold seems to be a status(地位)symbol.Indian businessman Datta Phuge loves gold so much that he even bought a shirt made of gold at a cost of $250,000.I’m not sure I’d spend so much money on a shirt, would you?But Datta Phuge has his reason. He explains,“Some people want to own an Audi or a Mercedes.I choose gold.”
For other people, gold is an investment(投資).The price of gold generally increases over time and in European markets,it reached even $1,500 per ounce in 2011.
And for many people,a family heirloom(傳家寶)brings together status and investment. My mother has a gold bracelet(手鐲)that was given to her by her grandmother who,in turn, inherited it from her own grandmother. It’s quite a heavy piece and probably worth quite a lot of money. But its mental value is greater than its value in dollars. It’s a beautiful object that holds many family memories. When the time comes,my mum will give the bracelet to me,and one day,I’ll pass it on to the younger generation.
Therefore, status and investment are good reasons to value gold. However,I think that the real reason why people love gold is that it can be made into beautiful objects.Think about Tutankhamen’s death mask.Have you ever seen anything so beautiful?
People love gold because it holds their minds, their imaginations and, above all, their hearts.
1.The main idea of the first paragraph is that .
A.the author has traveled to many countries
B.people celebrate almost everything
C.there are many ways to use gold
D.people all over the world love gold
2.Datta Phuge bought a shirt made of gold because .
A.gold is a status symbol to him
B.he loves this kind of shirt
C.people there love gold so much
D.he is a successful businessman
3.According to the passage,in Europe, gold could be per ounce in 2010.
A.$1,550 B.$1,500 C.$1,450 D.$1,600
4.The gold bracelet is the heirloom for the author’s family mainly because .
A.it’s worth a lot of money
B.it brings status and investment
C.it’s a beautiful object
D.it holds family memories
