51.___________________
I am a member of our school’s volunteer association. During my freshman(大學(xué)一年級新生) year, I was asked to write up a plan for volunteers who assisted patients there. So I visited the hospice (末期病人療養(yǎng)所) several times. Later, I realized I could do more for the patients and so began volunteering.
52.___________________
When I was a freshman, I was not used to college life. I sometimes felt the hospice was like home. Here, many grannies treated me like their own relative, and I could feel strongly that I was needed. Just shaking hands made them come to life. I not only get great comfort from helping many patients get through the last period of their lives. I also learn a lot from their experiences.
53.___________________
You have to be prepared both mentally and physically. Most people at this hospice are facing death. So you have prepared to be patient and make them happy and relaxed. Also, persistence is needed. After seeing so many people here die, I know that persistence is hard. But you have to remember that you job is to help them feel less pain before death.
54.___________________
Good volunteers have something in common: They regard their job as a career, rather than some task that’s been assigned. They learn to enjoy what they are doing, no matter how boring it is. We have a volunteer who has been with us for more than a year. His job is translating letters from kids we helped. Even when he was busy with his classes, he would take a taxi to our office to pick up the letters. When we asked him why, he told us he enjoyed the kids’ stories and learned a lot from them.
55.___________________
Students are often very enthusiastic and direct. They give us feedback that helps us improve our work. And they value the opportunity we give them to broaden their horizons. However, they are still young and some are not responsible enough. And sometimes, they are lazy and careless.

Every year when the Italian artist Michelangelo’s (1475-1564,意大利文藝復(fù)興時期著名雕刻家、畫家、建筑師) birthday comes around, computer users all over the world are filled with fear (害怕) and use their computers with care. Some may even choose not to turn on their computers on March 3. All this fear and care are just because a deadly computer virus is ready to cause damages on that day.
What’s a computer virus then? Why do people get so afraid of it?
A computer virus is, in fact, a little program that is put into other programs and that does something bad. It is called a virus because, like any real-life viruses such as AIDs virus, it reproduces itself. And when these programs are run, the virus is brought to life. It hides itself in your computer system waiting for the right moment to make damages. And at the same time it keeps producing itself by copying itself onto other programs.
The Michelangelo virus waits until the artist’s birthday comes around, and then it will wake up to do very bad things like destroying you files (毀壞文檔) . So next time when you turn on your computer, look out for computer viruses!

Do you have bright ideas? Ideas or inventions that change society or, at least, make life easier for somebody? Perhaps we all do sometimes, but we don’t often make the idea a reality. Recently, in Britain, there was a competition called British Designers for Tomorrow. The competition encourages young people to carry out their bright ideas. There were two groups in the contest: Group One was for schoolchildren under 16; Group Two was for schoolchildren over 16, and there were eleven prize-winners altogether.
Neil Hunt, one of the prize-winners, was called “Sunshine Superman(超人)”. It’s important when people study the weather to be able to record sunshine accurately. We need to know how many hours of sunshine we have and how strong it is. Most sunshine recorders only record direct sunlight. Neil’s is more accurate(精確的) and this is very important for research into the way of using solar(太陽的)power.
You can do so much with animated(模擬有生命物體的)cartoon. Look at Simon West’s idea for animated road signs. He uses pictures which appear to move as you go nearer to or farther from them. This isn’t a new idea. But it is new to use these pictures on road signs. “We found that people were more likely to see moving signs,” said Simon. So now, you can really see rocks falling, trains moving , horses running or a car falling over the edge of a cliff(懸崖). Quite a warning!
The ideas in the competition were so inventive that we are surprised that British industry doesn’t ask more schoolchildren for suggestions. Perhaps this will be the start of “pupil power!”
61. The writer thinks that people seldom ______.
A. have bright ideas                            B. turn their bright ideas into reality
C. make their life easier                         D. think of inventing something
62. The organizers of the competition hoped the schoolchildren who joined in it would ___.
A. become good designers for future Britain
B. invent something for immediate use
C. design something useful for the next day
D. win as many prizes as they could
63. Neil Hunt’s design would finally lead to the improvement of the way of _______.
A. recording direct sunshine                       B. recording the hours of sunshine
C. using the energy of the sun              D. knowing how strong sunlight is
64. What’s the use of Simon West’s animated road signs?
A. To warn people to be careful while working.
B. To warn people on the roads of the danger ahead.
C. To add to the beauty of a city.
D. To help make a car trip more exciting.
65. The writer seems to be encouraging the British industry to ______.
A. take better care of schoolchildren
B. help schoolchildren in their studies
C. stop asking schoolchildren for suggestions
D. pay more attention to schoolchildren’s inventive power

Tracking Stations
One night in February 1962, John H. Glenn, Jr., flew over Australia. The man in the Mercury(水星)capsule(宇宙飛行容器)was alone, but friendly voices reached him by radio. Over the dark land 100 miles below, he saw sparkling lights.  It marked the city of Perth, where people had turned on their lights as a greeting to him.
"In Friendship 7," Glenn radioed, "the lights show up very well. Thank everybody for turning them on." His capsule needed on to the east.
During his three orbits of the earth, Glenn could always reach one of the eighteen tracking stations. Some of them were on ships at sea. Others were in the United States.
Many of the stations had been built with the help of other countries. These countries allowed Americans to bring in radio equipment and set it up. Without the help of such lands as Nigeria, Zanzibar, and Mexico, there would have been breaks in the worldwide radio network. John Glenn, Jr., was the first American to orbit the earth. For his flight, the tracking network(跟蹤網(wǎng)絡(luò))covered 60,000 land or statute miles(法定英里). Five hundred men worked in the stations along the route. Since his flight, the network has grown. Today, it covers more than 100, 000 statute or land miles and has about one hundred stations. One-third of these stations are outside the United States.

On 27th February 2008, something very unusual happened in the UK; there was a rather large earthquake. It was the biggest earthquake in 25 years in the UK. There have been very small tremors in the past but they pale into insignificance compared to this one.
It was felt in a large area across the country too, from as far north as Edinburgh in Scotland to as far south as Plymouth on the south coast of England.
The epicenter of the earthquake was in a small town in Lincolnshire, which is an area about two and a half to three hours north of London by car. A magnitude of 5.2 was registered on the Richter scale.
There were lots of reports in the news from people who felt the earth move. One man said, "We had loads of vibrating and wall shaking and stuff, noise coming off the roof. I came outside – the chimney's on the floor!"
A collapsed chimney was the cause of what was probably the worst injury from the earthquake; a man broke his pelvis when the chimney fell on him.
Another man who spoke to the BBC described the moment the earthquake occurred, "Everything was shaking. As soon as it happened we all went outside and saw everyone else down the street, coming out and just realized it was an earthquake."
The huge rumble, which was felt by a lot of people, surprisingly caused very little structural damage to property.
Most British people would be surprised to learn that there are 200-300 earthquakes in Britain every year, but most of them are so small, they go unnoticed. The magnitude of this earthquake is fairly small in comparison to some other natural disasters that have made international news, but for the people affected, it certainly came as quite a surprise.
60. Before this earthquake _______.
A. there was no signs of any shakings at all.
B. people did not feel anything unusual.
C. many people realized there would be a bigger one to come.
D. some small quakes were only too small to be ignored.
61. From this passage we know ______ is in the south of Great Britain.
A. Lincolnshire                      B. Edinburgh
C. Plymouth                         D. Scotland
62. This earthquake  _____.
A. hardly caused any damages to the people’s belongings..
B. brought down many buildings in England.
C. scared many people to death.
D. made the world greatly surprised.
63. After reading this passage we can infer_______.
A. people in England faced the earthquake bravely.
B. this earthquake seemed to be felt all over Great Britain.
C. this earthquake is the biggest one in history.
D. the chimneys in Britain are the most poorly built parts of the houses.

In every British town, large and small, you will find shops that sell second-hand goods. Sometimes such shops deal mostly in furniture, sometimes in books, sometimes in ornaments (裝飾) and household goods, sometimes even in clothes.
The furniture may often be "antique", and it may well have changed hands many times. It may also be very valuable, although the most valuable piece will usually go to the London salerooms, where one piece might well be sold for hundreds of thousands of pounds. As you look around these shops and see the polished wood of chests and tables, you cannot help thinking of those long-dead hands which polished that wood, of those now-closed eyes which once looked at these pieces with love.
The books, too, may be antique and very precious; some may be rare first printings. Often when someone dies or has to move house, his books may all be sold, so that sometimes you may find whole libraries in one shop. On the border between England and Wales, there is a town which has become a huge bookshop as well. Even the cinema and castle have been taken over, and now books have replaced sheep as the town's main trade.
There are also much more humble shops, sometimes simply called "junk shops", where you can buy small household pieces very cheaply. Sometimes the profits (利潤) from these shops go to charity(慈善事業(yè)). Even these pieces, though, can make you feel sad; you think of those people who once treasured them, but who have moved on to another country or to death.
Although the British do not worship(崇拜) their ancestors, they do treasure the past and the things of the past. This is true of houses as well. These days no one knocks them down; they are rebuilt until they are often better than new. In Britain, people do not buy something just because it is new. Old things are treasured for their proven worth; new things have to prove themselves before they are accepted.
57.Books found in second-hand book shops may_________.
A.be copies of the earliest printings    B.be on sale for the first time
C.never be worth very much          D.never be rare
58.Second-hand goods sometimes fill you with sadness because_________.
A.they are too expensive for average buyers
B.they remind you of the original owners
  C.they are now forgotten
  D.they are sold for charity
59.The average British person ___________.
A.does not respect old things because they are not fashionable
B.likes to build new houses simply because it is fashionable to do so
C.likes to buy new things because they are fashionable
D.does not like to buy things simply because they are fashionable

Complaints(投訴) should be made to a responsible person. Go back to the shop where you bought the goods, taking with you any receipt(收據(jù)) you may have. Ask to see the seller in a large store. In a small store the assistant may also be the owner so you can complain directly. In a chain store, ask to see the manager. If you telephone, ask the name of the person who handles your enquiry, otherwise you may never find out who deals with the complaint later.
Even the bravest person finds it difficult to stand up in a group of people to complain, so if you do not want to do it in person, write a letter. Stick to the facts and keep a copy of what you write. At this stage, you should give any receipt number, but you should not need to give receipts or other papers to prove you bought the article. If you are not satisfied with the answer you get, or if you do not get a reply, write to the managing director of the firm, store, or organization. Be sure to keep copies of your own letter and any you receive.
If your complaint is a just one, the shopkeeper may offer to replace or repair the faulty article. You may find it an attractive solution. In certain cases you may have the right to refuse the goods and ask for the money back, but this is when you have hardly used the goods and have acted at once. Even when you cannot refuse the goods you may be able to get some money back as well. And you have suffered some special loss, if, for example, a new washing machine tears your clothes, you might receive money to repair them.
60. The shoppers may make a complaint because ____.
A.they dislike causing a fuss(大驚小怪)
B.it doesn’t do what is claimed(要求) for it
C.the article is not up to standard
D.they are at fault in buying the article
61. If you write a letter to complain, _____.
A.it is important to keep a record of what you say
B.it is necessary to send receipts
C.say how you feel about the matter
D.ask what receipt numbers you should give
62. You can demand your money back only if ____.
A.the article cannot be replaced or repaired
B.you have gone back immediately
C.the article has not gone up in price since you bought it
D.the article has defects(缺陷)
63. You may be able to claim extra money when ____.
A.you have been hurt
B.you can’t find something special
C.damage has been caused by the faulty article
D.your clothes have been torn or lost

Directions: Read the texts from a magazine article in which five people talked about their listening habits. For questions 64 to 68, match one of the speakers to one of the following statements (A to F ) given below. Note: there is one extra statement.
Mary Taylor:
My father looked at me disapprovingly when I talked to him about ideas that he didn’t agree with. He would often interrupt me in the middle of a sentence to tell me I was wrong. As a result of the childhood experience, I had difficulty concentrating when anyone in authority talked to me. I would concentrate on how I was coming across to the other person, not on what the person was saying.
Chris More:
My father used to frown (皺眉) when concentrating on something. I thought he was angry or upset with me until I later found out that he was only thinking about what he was doing. I certainly experienced some anxiety until I found this out. When I started conducting seminars(會議), I discovered that I frowned a lot while concentrating on what the talker was saying , and the attendees thought I was being critical of them.
Janet Smith:
I constantly tuned others out (不理睬)while they were talking and I couldn’t seem to break the habit . It upset me because I was having trouble at work listening to directions and paying attention during meetings. As it happened, my mother had been a nonstop talker who ignored my needs. To keep my own sanity(清醒), I had learned to shut her out of my consciousness. I became so good at tuning her out that I generalized this behavior ------ tuning other people out as well.
Lylian Mason:
I often feel victim in my interactions with my boss. I think he is the persecutor and I’m the victim. For example, late Thursday afternoon, my boss gave me a twenty-page project with graphs and numerical tables to type and finish by Monday at 10 a.m. I didn’t listen to the time he stated when he handed me the project. Instead, I was busy figuring out how I was going to get it down and finish the other work I had on my desk.
Jack Candison:
When I am with a group of people who are interested in the subject I am covering and are receptive to me, they are open to more material and ideas. The more important the subject is to them, the more listening involvement they get into. In other words, the more relevant my material is to their personal or professional goals, the more they listen to what I have to say and the less they tune me out.
64. __________ Mary Taylor
65. __________Chris More
66. __________Janet Smith
67. __________Lylian Mason
68. __________Jack Candison
A.It’s hard for me to change my bad habit of not listening to others.
B.The heavy workload worried me so much.
C.I gave people the impression that I’m being picky (挑剔的)
D.My boss listens to me carefully.
E.My father used to ignore me.
F.People are likely to listen more attentively while the subject is of interest to them.

第一節(jié)閱讀理解 (共15小題;每小題2分,滿分30分)
閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的A、B、C和D項中,選出最佳選項,并在答題卡上將該項涂黑。
When my family moved to America from a small village in Guangdong, China, we brought not only our luggage, but also our village rules, customs and culture. One of the rules is that young people should always respect elders. Unluckily, this rule led to my very first embarrassment in the United States.
I had a part-time job as a waiter in a Chinese restaurant. One time, when I was serving food to a middle-aged couple, the wife asked me how the food could be served so quickly. I told her that I had made sure they got their food quickly because I always respect the elderly. As soon as I said that, her face showed great displeasure. My manager, who happened to hear what I said, took me aside and gave me a long lecture about how sensitive(敏感) Americans are and how they dislike the description “old”. I then walked back to the table and apologized to the wife. After the couple heard my reason, they understood that the problem was caused by cultural differences, so they laughed and were no longer angry.
In my village in China, people are proud of being old. Not so many people live to be seventy or eighty, and people who reach such an age have the most knowledge and experience. Young people always respect older people because they know they can learn from their rich experience.
However, in the United States, people think “growing old” is a problem since “old” shows that a person is going to retire or that the body is not working well. Here many people try to keep themselves away from growing old by doing exercises or jogging, and women put on makeup, hoping to look young. When I told the couple in the restaurant that I respect the elderly, they got angry because this caused them to feel they had failed to stay young. I had told them something they didn’t want to hear.
After that, I changed the way I had been with older people. It is not that I don’t respect them any more; I still respect them, but now I don’t show my feelings through words.
41.Jack brought the couple their food very fast because_________.
A.the manager asked him to do so
B.he respected the elderly
C.the couple wanted him to do so
D.he wanted more pay
42.When Jack called the couple “elderly”, they became__________.
A.nervous                                                     B.satisfied
C.unhappy                                                    D.excited
43.In Jack’s hometown, _________.
A.people dislike being called “old”
B.people are proud of being old
C.many people reach the age of seventy or eighty
D.the elderly are the first to get food in restaurants
44.After this experience, Jack_________.
A.lost his job in the restaurant
B.made friends with the couple
C.no longer respected the elderly
D.changed his way with older people
45.Which of the following is TRUE?
A.The more Jack explained, the angrier the couple got.
B.Jack wanted to show his feelings through words after his experience.
C.The manager went back to the table and apologized to the couple.
D.From this experience, Jack learned more about American culture.

Nothing is more pleasing and romantic as flowers in the bedroom. Now, a new study says that the sweet smells of flowers in the bedroom can also lead to sweet dreams.
Researchers in Germany have carried out the study and have found that sleeping with flowers in the bedroom may encourage sweet dreams, a major finding they claim could help nightmare sufferers to and extent.
They came to the conclusion after an analysis of the sleep patterns of 15 female volunteers for a period of nearly 30 nights, a leading British newspaper reported on Monday.
The researchers pumped scents of rotten eggs, roses or no scent under their noses for nearly ten seconds while the women were in the Rapid Eye Movement period of sleep when a dream occurs.
The subjects were then woken up and asked to record their dreams. The smells had an effect on the emotions of the dreams but did not become part of the dream in that the women exposed to roses did not dream about roses the study found.
There was a correlation between the negative smells and negative emotional scores the sleepers reported from their dream.
According to the researchers, it’ll be interesting to study nightmare sufferers and if positive smells can actually influence the mood of their dreams as a form of treatment in the future.
The study has been presented at the 2008 American Academy of Otoblaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Foundation Annual Meeting in Chicago.
