I first visited hutong as part of a tourist group several years ago. We rode on a trishaw(腳踏三輪車) with a guide explaining the history, architecture and lifestyle of the local inhabitants.
Having visited the "must-sees" of Beijing, like the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, the Drum Tower and the Summer Palace, going into the hutong home of some famous ancient families gave the “Beijing experience” a human element.
My curiosity has sharpened over the years from reading about them at every opportunity. During the preparation for the Olympics I was eager to learn that some siheyuan courtyards in hutong were turned into accommodations(食宿) for visitors. I wished to stay in one someday.
Preparing for a recent trip to the capital, I eagerly sought one out. On my limited teacher’s salary, I settled on an affordable option, though I looked longingly at the more upscale courtyard accommodations.
As usual, I ended up having something closer to a true experience. A real family still lives in the courtyard, which is closer to the original. The rooms all opened into the central courtyard. Flowers were blooming, beans and peas were climbing up the bamboo fence, and the cat was napping in the sun. Every day after exploring the city, I'd hurry back to the hutong, take a quick shower and join the cat – snoozing(小睡) in a bamboo-made chair with a book ready nearby.
As the other guests came back we’d greet one another. There was a mother and young daughter from France, a guy from Canada, a mother and teenage daughter from the Netherlands, a teacher from England and several guests from various parts of China.
Coming and going through the narrow alleys(小巷) of the hutong, the residents would smile and give cheery “ni hao” (hello). Laughing children were playing under the watchful eyes of the neighbors. I felt right at home in this friendly neighborhood.

The clock struck eleven at night. The whole house was quiet. Everyone was in bed except me. Under the strong light,I looked sadly before me at a huge pile of that troublesome stuff(東西) they call “books”.
I was going to have my examination the next day.  “When can I go to bed?” I asked myself. I didn’t answer,in fact, I dared not.

Sometimes I really doubt whether there is love between my parents. Every day they are busy trying to   36  in order to pay the high school cost for my brother and me. They don’t act in the   37  ways that I read in books or I see on TV. In their opinion, “I love you” is too   38  for them to say. Sending flowers to each other on Lovers’ Day is even more out of   39 .
One day, Mom was sewing a quilt (縫被子). I sat   40  beside her. “Mom, I have a question. Is there   41  between you and Dad?” I asked her in a very low voice.
Mom stopped her work and raised her head with   42  in her eyes. She didn’t answer immediately. She   43  her head and continued to sew the quilt.
I was very worried because I thought I had   44  her. I was very regretful and I didn’t know what I should do. But at last I heard my mother say the following words:
“Susan,” she said   45 , “Look at this thread. Sometimes it   46 , but most of it disappears in the quilt. The thread really makes the quilt strong and long-lasting. If life is a quilt, then love should be a thread. It can   47    be seen anywhere or anytime, but it’s really there. Love is   48 .”
I listened carefully but I couldn’t   49  her until the next spring. At that time, my father suddenly got sick seriously. My mother had to stay with him in the hospital for a month. When they returned home, they both looked   50 . It seemed both of them had had a serious illness. “Dad, how are you feeling now?” I asked him one day.
“Susan ,” he said kindly. “To tell you the truth, I just like   52  with your mom.”   53 his eyes, I know he loves my mother deeply.
Once I thought love meant flowers, gifts and   54 . But from this experience, I understand that love is just   55  in the quilt of our life. Love is inside, making life strong and warm.

After spending three days in a wheelchair, I was ready to quit. Not only did I have to battle cracked (裂縫的) and uneven (不平的) pavements, I had to deal with the bad attitude of pedestrians (行人) and a cold rain. But I didn’t give up because of people like Tiffany Payne.
Payne, who has been using a wheelchair for 18 years, laughed at me:
“Imagine trying to get around town in the winter,” she said.
I could see her point: You’re battling to get to a doctor’s appointment (預約), but no one has shoveled (鏟) after a big snowfall. Your choices: Move out and risk getting stuck, or reschedule the appointment.
Those of us fortunate enough to get around on our own two legs don’t give a second thought to the person in a wheelchair next to us at a crosswalk. That would require us to look down.
So I decided to try using a wheelchair to get a sample of what their lives are like. It wasn’t long before I saw that people who use wheelchairs are forced to deal with a lot of trouble.
During my experiment, I was ignored by store staff while shopping and bumped into by inattentive (疏忽的) walkers without so much as an apology.
Some people even gave me angry looks as if I were the one at fault.
Once in a store, a woman bumped into me trying to get to the new iPad. She didn’t say, “Excuse me.”
When salespeople did offer assistance, they talked to people who were with me, instead of me. I wanted to yell: “Hey, I’m down here!”
Some salespeople talked to me as though I were a child or acted like they didn’t want to be bothered with me.
People who use wheelchairs want to be treated like everyone else. They also comprehend (理解), so you don’t have to speak to them in a childlike, sing-song voice. It’s not very appealing (吸引人的), especially when the person is an adult. And most importantly, remember they have feelings that can be hurt just like yours.
Spending three days in a wheelchair made me look differently at those who have to use one. I hope you do the same.
By James E. Causey

“Don’t worry about it, honey,” she ____26___. “if I never thought about it, I would not ___27____ the love and the memories we shared. Even after 50 years of ___28____ ,each passing moment would bring a deeper meaning to the word love. Now, trust me, I know how ____29___ that sounds. We had our share of challenging times, but in the end ____30___ of that mattered.”
Unsure of what to say, I laughed ___31___ . I picked up the phone to relay her information. After finally completing the credit application, I ____32____ to find myself riveted(固定) to the lady’s face again.
Her eyes began to sparkle ___33___ she continued in a heart-to-heart way. I couldn’t believe someone could open up to a perfect stranger, but it was not my place to ___34____ . I enjoyed listening to her just as much as she ___35___ having somebody to talk to.
“ Have you ever been ____ 36___?” she  asked.
I couldn’t help but ___37____. “Ah, no.” I replied. “I’m only 16.”
“Sixteen?” she murmured. “That’s a great age, an age of ____38____. There’s so much worth learning.”
She then spoke in a whipser, “Never take anyone for granted. If you are in ____39___ with someone, let it known. Otherwise, life may pass you by. Don’t spend your life angry . The ridiculous arguments which you think are important won’t even be remembered in a short time.”
Then, she hugged me and thanked me for letting her talk. As she turned to walk away, I could see that tears still hung in her eyes, but the smile that lit her face was amazing. After that,    I have never seen that woman again, but her words of inspiration still live in me. At that time, the words were only little bits of advice.
