When I walked into the house after school, the first thing I noticed was a box with items I recognized from my dad’s office.
“What are you doing home already?” I asked casually.
“Andrew, I was laid off today,” he answered, quietly.
I was sure he was joking. “No, you weren’t. Why are you really home?”
Then I noticed his seriousness and realized he was telling the truth. My father has always been a hard worker and prided himself on his career. Providing for our family has been his joy, and I guess I had taken his work for granted.
My father’s unemployment created many changes in our lives. For starters, he was home all the time, which meant my bed had to be made, my room cleaned up, and my homework done right after school. I would come home every day to find him at the computer searching for jobs. I began to notice how down he seemed, and how losing his job had affected his self-esteem, though he tried to be optimistic. For the first time, I saw my dad as vulnerable. He asked my brother and me to spend less. I gave up my allowance, which even though it wasn’t much, felt like the right thing to do. I also found a part-time job.
After several difficult months of searching, my dad decided to go in a totally different direction. He explained that he never wanted to be laid off again, so he was going to start his own business. Day by day, I watched him build it, and I admired how much time and energy he expended.
One evening I asked if he needed help.
“Only if it doesn’t interfere with school,” he said.
I showed up at his office the next afternoon, and most afternoons after that for two months. I always knew he was a hard worker, but watching him in action really impacted me. Although this was one of the worst experiences for our family, it taught me a lot about dealing with adversity. Now I know that through creative problem-solving, I can always find Plan B, ask for help, and take risks. What I have learned from my dad’s understanding of business and his work ethic are two of the most important lessons I will ever learn, and will be my foundations for success.

Brazil has become one of the developing world' s great successes in reducing population
growth but more by accident than design. While countries such as India have made joint efforts
to reduce birth rates, Brazil has had better result without really trying, says George Martine at
Harvard.
Brazil' s population growth rate has dropped from 2. 99% a year between 1951 and 1960 to
1.93% a year between 1981 and 1990, and Brazilian women now have only 2. 7 children on
average. Martine says this figure may have fallen still further since 1990, an achievement that
makes it the envy of many other Third World countries.
According to Martine, both soap operas and instalment(分期付款) plans played an important role in lowering the birth rate. Brazil is one of the world' s biggest producers of soap operas. Global, Brazil' s most popular television network, shows three hours of soaps six nights a week, while three others show at least one hour a night. Most soaps are based on wealthy
characters living the high life in big cities.
"They described that middle and upper class values not many children and women
working. They influenced all parts of Brazil. " says Martine
Meanwhile, the instalment plans tired to encourage he poor to become consume(消費者).
“This led  to a  great change  in  consumption  patterns  and  consumption  went against  unlimited reproduction (生育)." says Martine.
53.  Brazil has cut its  population ,growth____.
A. by education    B.  by family plan   C. by TV program   D. by chance
54.  Some Third World countries
A. have paid little attention to birth control
B. would soon join Brazilin controlling their birth rate.
C. haven't succeeded in controlling the population
D. didn't realize the role of TV plays  in  family  planning
55.  Soap operas have helped to lower Brazil's birth  rate  because____.
A. they keep people sitting long hour watching TV
B. they have gradually changed people's way of life
C. people are interested in the stories
D. they make birth control popular
56. What is Martine's conclusion about Brazil's population growth?
A. The rising in birth rate will increase consumption.
B. The desire for consumption helps to reduce birth rate.
C. consumption has nothing to do with reproduction.
D. Soap operas can always lead to low birth rate.

When someone says, “Well, I guess I’ll have to go to face the music.” It doesn’t mean he is planning to go to a concert. It is  36  less pleasant, like  37 in by your boss to explain why you did this and did that, and why you did not do this  38  that. Terrible music, indeed, but it has to 39  . At some time or  40  , every one of us has had to “face the music”, especially as children. We can all remember father’s  41 voice, “I want to talk to you!” and only  42  we did not obey  him. What an unpleasant business it   43 !
The phrase “to face the music” is known  44  every American, young and old. It is at least 100 years old. Where did the  45 come from?
The first  46  comes from American novelist James Fennimore Cooper. He said, in 1851,  47 the expression was first  48  by actors while waiting in the  49 to go on stage. After they got their clue (暗示) to go on, they often said, “It’s time to go to face the music.” And this is  50  what they did face — the orchestra (管弦樂隊) which was just below the stage.
An actor might be frightened or  51  as he moved on to the stage in front of him. The audience might be friendly, or perhaps unfriendly, especially  52 he forgot his lines. But he had to go out. If he did not, there would be no play. So, “to face the music”  53  to mean: having to go  54 something, no matter how unpleasant the 55  might be, because you knew you had no choice.

My mother-in-law, Dorothy, is showing me the red notebook that’s almost as precious to her as my husband’s baby pictures. Inside the notebook is a list of the books she has read since 2007. For some people waking up in the middle of the night is a terrible thing. But for my mother-in-law, that time is a gift. At 87, she is getting the education she never had by working her way through great literature. She has now read close to 100 books, including every single novel by Anthony Trollope, Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, Edith Wharton, Henry James and Thomas Mann.
My mother-in-law discusses her passion with the enthusiasm of a young girl, although she can also be a very tough critic, writing “VG’ for “ very good” in the margins next to her favorites. So far, only a handful of books have received the top prize.
Born in Ridgefield, Conn, Dorothy was the youngest daughter of an Italian gardener. She taught herself English by reading The New York Times. Eager to come to Manhattan, she became a nurse, married a dentist and spent the next several decades keeping the house and raising a family. In her later years, she put her nursing skills to good use by taking care of my father-in-law, who had lung cancer. There were many trips to the emergency room in the middle of the night and then a long hospital stay. She stayed awake to watch over him for 15 hours a day. Always a light sleeper, she developed sleeplessness as a result of the stress.
It worsened after he died. Deeply sad and lonely for the first time in her life, she began waking up around 2am. Julian and Sylvia, the elderly couple next door suggest she read literature. And so Julian, a great lover of literature, became her “professor”, providing books from his large library. Suddenly the terrifying hole turned onto a world of amazing characters.
小題1:Why is Dorothy considered a tough critic?
A.Because no books are inspiring enough in her eyes.
B.Because only a few books are thought highly of by her.
C.Because she only reads books by famous writers.
