As I left Spacsavers, I walked along the Regent Road, and suddenly the world was closing in around me. I could no longer hear the sound of busy London traffic, the footsteps walking behind me, the buzz of conversation around me. I felt anxious crossing the road. All the I take for granted had gone. I had entered into a world of silence.
This experience occurred a few weeks ago when I agreed to “go deaf for the day” to the work of the charity Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. Now I serve as an ambassador.
That day when I a cab to take me to the office of my manager, Gavin, I couldn’t hear what the taxi driver was saying to me. was impossible. Then, when I reached the office, I had to the interphone (對講機(jī))five times as I couldn’t hear a(n) .
Everybody said I was shouting at them — I simply wasn’t of the volume of my own voice. Gavin kept telling me my phone was ringing, but I didn’t . I was too busy trying to concentrate on his lips. And when he tried to tell me a code to put into my phone, I had to keep asking him to repeat it more slowly again and again. he lost his patience and shouted at me: “Just give me the phone!” I was shocked.
People couldn’t be to repeat themselves, so they kept trying to do things for me that I was to finish by myself. I lost control, feeling and awkward.
Being deaf for the day was extraordinarily . I had to work so hard to “ ” with my eyes, get people’s attention and use my other to make up for my lack of hearing. It was a huge, exhausting effort. Until that I didn’t realize how much I took my own hearing for granted, or the sorts of emotions and experiences deaf people go .
Therefore, if a deaf person asks you to repeat something, say: “It doesn’t matter.” It does matter. It matters more than you know.

I came to study in the United States a year ago .Yet I did not know the real American society until I was injured in a car accident because after the accident I had to see a doctor and go to court.
After the accident .my roommate called a doctor for me. I was very grateful and determined to repay him one day. But the next day, he asked me to pay him $200 for what he had done. I was astonished. He had good reason to charge me, he said. And if I wanted to collect money from the person who was responsible for my injury, I’d have to have a good lawyer. And only a good doctor can help me get a good lawyer .Now that he had helped me find a good doctor, it was only fair that I should pay him.
But every day I went to see the doctor, I had to wait about 50 minutes. He would see two or three patients at the same time, and often stop treating one so as to see another. Yet he charged me $115 each time .The final examination report consisted of ten lines, and it cost me $215.
My lawyer was all smiles the first time we met. But after that he avoided seeing me at all. He knew very well the other party was responsible for the accident, yet he hardly did anything. He simply waited to collect his money. He was so irresponsible that I decided to dismiss him. And he made me pay him $770.
Now I had to act as my own lawyer. Due to my inexperience, I told the insurance company the date I was leaving America. Knowing that, they played for time…and I left without getting a cent.

C. There are more bad sides in America than good sides.
D. Money is more important than other things in the US.

The Taj Mahal (泰姬陵) is a love story, a sad and beautiful one. If it didn’t exist, we would easily imagine that the story of its construction was simply a fairy tale. Three hundred years ago, there lived an Indian emperor called Shah Jahan. His wife was a beautiful and bright woman whom he loved greatly. Her title was Mumtazl Mahan: its shortened form Taj Mahan, means “pride of the palace”. In the year 1630 this beloved wife of the emperor died. He was so brokenhearted that he thought of giving up his throne. He decided out of his love for his wife, to build her the most beautiful tomb that had ever been seen.
He summoned the best artists and architects from India, Turkey, Persia and Arabia and finally, the design was complete. It took more than twenty thousand men working over a period of 18 years to build the Taj Mahan, one of the most beautiful buildings in the world.
The building itself stands on a marble platform 29 meters square and 6-7 meters high. Towers rise from each of the four corners. The Taj itself soars another 61 meters into the air. It is an eight-sided building made of white marble.
The emperor planned to build an identical tomb of black marble for himself on the other side of the river connected by a silver bridge. Along the river banks of the Amazon and the Orinoco there lives a bird that swims before it can fly, flies like a fat chicken, eats green leaves, has the stomach of a cow and has claws (爪) on its wings when young. They build their homes about 4.6m above the river, an important feature (特征) for the safety of the young. It is called the hoatzin.
In appearance, the birds of both sexes look very much alike with brown on the back and cream and red on the underside. The head is small, with a large set of feathers on the top, bright red eyes, and blue skin. Its nearest relatives are the common birds, cuckoos. Its most striking feature, though, is only found in the young.
Baby hoatzins have a claw on the leading edge of each wing and another at the end of each wing tip. Using these four claws, together with the beak (喙), they can climb about in the bushes, looking very much like primitive(遠(yuǎn)古的) birds must have done. When the young hoatzins have learned to fly, they lose their claws.
During the drier months between December and March hoatzins fly about the forest in groups of 20 to 30 birds, but in April, when the rainy season begins, they collect together in smaller living units of two to seven birds for producing purposes.

A.They had claws to help them climb.
B.They could fly long distances.

D.They had a head with long feathers on the top.
4.Why do hoatzins collect together in smaller groups when the rainy season comes?
A.To find more food.
B.To protect themselves better.
C.To keep themselves warm.
