You can see kangaroos everywhere in Australia. They appear on TV , in books and in the shops. The government even plans to put them on passports(護照).Although it's the best loved animal in Australia, millions of kangaroos are killed every year. Why,people ask,do the Australians kill them? Quite simply, there are too many of them.

The number of kangaroos in Australia is believed to be 20 - 25 million. It is as much as 7 million more than the number of people living in the country.

There are several reasons for the growth in the kangaroo numbers. There is plenty of water in the places where kangaroos live and many of the dingoes―dogs that like to kill and eat kangaroos , are not there any more.

Kangaroos also produce(繁殖)the young all the year round. When a female kangaroo gives birth (生育).she gets pregnant again immediately (馬上).

The large number of kangaroos means some kangaroos don't get food to eat. They are so hungry that they break into farms and fight against other animals for food.

To solve the problem , the Australian government allows a certain number of kangaroos to be killed each year.

Many people don't think that it's right to kill kangaroos, but the government thinks that it is only helping the farmers.

Australia sells 5 million kilos of kangaroo meat every year―it is used to make hamburgers and meat for dogs.

Sometimes, even the best friends have fights. They disagree with each other and begin to argue. Sometimes, they even stop talking to each other.

What can be done to help the two friends make up? Finding a good friend who knows both of them very well to be a peacemaker is a good way. Maybe one day you will be a peacemaker for your good friends. Here are some useful communication strategies for you to use:

State your feelings clearly but don,t criticize them. Begin with "I feel. . . " instead of "You always...”

Don't stop or finish the other person's sentences.

Listen carefully to what the other person is saying. Try to see the other person's side of the disagreement.

Look at the other person in the eyes when you are talking.

Ask questions to make sure that you understand the other person.

Repeat the other person's ideas as you understand them.

Never put anyone down. Saying things like "You're stupid" makes communication difficult.

Try to find a solution that makes the two friends happy. Never decide who is right and who is wrong. Instead, help them to find their own "win-win" solution. A "win-win" solution allows each of them to feel good. In this way, their friendship can be continued.

I've loved my mother's desk since I was just tall enough to sit above the top of it as Mother sat writing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens, and white paper,I decided that the act of writing must be a most wonderful thing in the world.

Years later, during her final illness,Mother kept different things for my sister and brother. "But the desk," she said again, "is for Elizabeth.”

I never saw her angry, never saw her cry. I knew she loved me;she showed it in action. But as a young girl , I wanted to have heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter.

They never happened. And a gulf opened between us. I was "too emotional(易動感情的)". But she lived "on the surface(表面)”.

You feel sick,so you go to the doctor's. She checks your fever, looks at your throat, and asks what you've been thinking about lately. When you leave, she gives you some medicine, and also a list of thinking skills that you are supposed to practice daily. She says that the way you think is causing some of your illness.

Psychologists , scientists who study the human mind and try to explain why people behave in the way that they do,are starting to believe it. You know that your brain is connected to every part of your body through your nervous system(神經系統(tǒng)).Now scientists have proved that how you think and feel can have an influence on the health of your body.

Stress(壓力,緊張)is caused whenever there is a problem or a change in your life. Of course, everybody has stress more or less;nobody's life is perfect. In fact, stress is necessary. Without stress,we would never learn anything or grow or change. We would probably be bored to death. But too much stress can hurt you. It can weaken your body's protection so that you are more likely to catch diseases. It can even make you more likely to have an accident.

When you feel stress, your brain sends a message to your body to produce a chemical called adrenaline(腎上腺素).Adrenaline speeds up your breathing and your heartbeat. Today you have a different kind of stress. Problems like endless homework or troubles with your family are the kind of things you can't fight or run away from. So you don't use up all that adrenaline. It just stays bottled up inside you,and that's what can do something bad to you.

What can you do about stress? First, you can try to find ways to change things so you aren't under so much stress. You can set up a plan to finish homework or go to a doctor or a psychologist to work things out with your family or your friends. But sometimes you can't change a stressful situation or you don't even want to. A big change might be a good change, but it will still be stressful.

The link(關聯(lián))between your body and brain works in two ways. Your body can help your mind deal with stress. If you are under stress, you need to take especially good care of your body.
It's important to get enough sleep and eat nutritious meals. Some people take a vitamin-mineral pill every day. Another thing that you can do is daily exercise. If you go walking or do aerobic dancing or work out at the gym,you give your body a chance to burn up some of that adrenaline.
Of course,a person who isn't used to much physical activity should start slowly. Anyone with a continuing physical problem should check with a doctor before starting any exercise programs.

A.     it's difficult to change a stressful situation
