Imagine a world in which there was suddenly no emotion―a world in which human beings could feel no love or happiness,no terror or hate. Try to imagine the consequences of such a transformation. People might not be able to stay alive: knowing neither joy nor pleasure, anxiety nor fear, they would be as likely to repeat acts that hurt them as acts that were beneficial. They could not learn: they could not benefit from experience because this emotionless world would lack rewards and punishments. Society would soon disappear: people would be as likely to harm one another as to provide help and support. Human relationships would not exist:in a world without friends or enemies, there could be no marriage, affection among companions, or bonds(關(guān)系)among members of groups. Society, s economic underpinnings(支柱)would be destroyed:since earning $ 10 million would be no more pleasant than earning $10,there would be no incentive to work. In fact, there would be no incentives of any kind, for as we will see, incentives imply a capacity to enjoy them.
In such a world, the chances that the human species would survive are next to zero, because emotions are the basic instrument of our survival and adaptation. Emotions structure the world for us in important ways. As individuals, we categorize objects on the basis of our emotions. True,we
consider the length, shape, size,or texture, but an object' s physical aspects are less important than what it has done or can do to us―hurt us,surprise us,anger us or make us joyful. We also use categorizations colored by emotions in our families, communities, and overall society. Out of our emotional experiences with objects and events comes a social feeling of agreement that certain things and actions are "good" and others are "bad",and we apply these categories to every aspect of our social life―from what foods we eat and what clothes we wear to how we keep promises and which people our group will accept. In fact, society uses our emotional reactions and attitudes, such as loyalty, morality, pride, shame, guilt, fear and greed,in order to maintain itself. Jt gives high rewards to individuals who perform important tasks such as surgery, and makes heroes out of individuals for unusual or dangerous achievements such as flying fighter planes in a war,and uses the legal system to make people afraid to engage in antisocial acts.
( ) 8. Which of the following is right according to the first paragraph?
A. People would not be able to tell the texture of objects.
B. People would not know what was beneficial and what was harmful to them.

A. they provide the means by which people view the size or shape of objects
B. they are the basis for the social feeling of agreement by which society is maintained
C. they encourage people to perform dangerous achievements
D. they produce more love than hate among people
( ) 11. Why are the emotional aspects of an object more important than its physical aspects?
A. They help society use its members for profit.
B. They encourage us to perform important tasks.
C. They help to perfect the legal system.
D. They help us adapt our behavior to the world surrounding us.
( ) 12. What is the text mainly about?
A. People could only live in a world with emotions.

Among various programmes,TV talk shows have covered every inch of space on daytime television. And anyone who watches them regularly knows that each one is different in style. But no two shows are more opposite in content, while at the same time standing out above the rest, than the Jerry Springer and the Oprah Winfrey shows.
Jerry Springer could easily be considered the king of "rubbish talk". The contents on his show are as surprising as they can be. For example, the show takes the ever-common talk show titles of
love, sex, cheating, and hate,to a different level. Clearly, the Jerry Springer show is about the dark side of society, yet people are willing to eat up the troubles of other people, s lives.
Like Jerry Springer,Oprah Winfrey takes TV talk show to its top. But Oprah goes in the opposite direction. The show is mainly about the improvement of society and different quality of life. Contents are from teaching your children lessons, managing your work week,to getting to know your neighbors.
Compared to Oprah, the Jerry Springer show looks like poisonous waste being poured into society. Jerry ends every show with a "final word". He makes a small speech about the entire idea of the show. Hopefully, this is the part where most people will learn something very valuable.
Clean as it is,the Oprah show is not for everyone. The show, s main viewers are middle class Americans. Most of these people have the time, money, and ability to deal with life's tough problems. Jerry Springer,on the other hand, has more of a connection with the young adults of society. These are 18-to-21-year-olds whose main troubles in life include love, relationship, sex, money and drug. They are the ones who see some value and lessons to be learned through the show's exploitation.
( ) 1. Compared with other TV talk shows, both the Jerry Springer and the Oprah Winfrey are ,
A. more interesting B. more formal C. more detailed D. unusually popular
( ) 2. Which of the following is likely to be a topic of the Oprah Winfrey show?
A. Family income planning. B. Nation hatred.
C. A new type of robot. D. Street accident.
( ) 3. We can learn from the passage that the two talk shows .
A. have become the only ones of its kind
B. attract different people
C. appear at different times of the day
D. exploit the weaknesses in human nature
