Is it wrong to use someone else’s wireless(Wi-Fi) connection?Just recently,a man was arrested for doing just that.At that time,he was sitting in the street with a laptop(便攜式電腦)and using an unsecured(無安全保護措施)wireless connection to surf the Net.What do you think about this topic?Listen to the following different views on it.
For a start,if someone is using your Internet service or downloading, this will affect your speed of access or download limit. Also,it’s bad for Internet service providers. They will suffer in the long run because fewer people will pay for an Internet service if they know they can get it for free. And finally, just imagine this:what if the person who is stealing your Internet connection is involved in an illegal activity?I think the police are totally right to arrest these criminals.
—by Sandra Wilkins
Basically,if the person who paid for the service still has everything they paid for, what’s the problem? It’s just like using the light from streetlamps to read your book,or watching someone else’s firework display. It’s not stealing.
Also,if you leave your wireless connection unsecured, then it is your own fault(過錯)if someone else uses it.Just as you wouldn’t leave your front door unlocked,or your car door open, neither should you leave your wireless connection open.By leaving your wireless connection open, you are inviting people to use it.Securing your wireless connection is as easy as clicking a few settings on your router(路由器).And finally, haven’t the police got more important crimes to solve? They’re always saying how they haven’t got the manpower to solve real issues. But this is just ridiculous(荒謬的).

Tips on How to Motivate a Team
Leadership is an art of making the work easier and more fun and motivating your team to succeed. If you want to get your team excited to face the next challenge, look through the following steps.
Set realistic goals. 1. For example,if you have a project that needs completing, create a chart that breaks the project into smaller goals so that,as they achieve each step, they can check it off and see themselves getting closer to completing the project.
2. So if it is somebody’s birthday or someone just got married or had a baby, make them feel special and important. 3.—do whatever is appropriate for the occasion,as long as you are respecting that person’s privacy.
Create social events outside of work.Motivate your team by not having everything be all about work, work, work. 4. Have members go out for lunch in groups every two weeks instead of everyone going separate ways,so people are more motivated to work hard because they’ll know each other better.
Be a good role model. As a person that each individual team member can look up to,you don’t have to be perfect, but you should be hard-working,reasonable,willing to communicate, and generally a smart, reliable employee. 5.
A.Make your team members feel recognized.
B.Get the team to work together.
C.Have monthly happy hours to let the members of your team relax a bit.
D.If you’re not showing the very quality that your team should possess, then why will they follow you?
E.Know what your team is capable of and provide a tool that shows their progress.
F.Email your best wishes and bring in a cake.
G.Get people walking around instead of over chat or email.

If you go to Ethiopia, you’ll find a strange palm-like structure, which is called Warka Water. It gathers water from fog and condensation(水珠)and is invented by an Italian firm.
When Italian designer Arturo Vittori and Swiss architect Andreas Vogler first visited Ethiopia in 2012,they were shocked to see women and children forced to walk miles to access what, for them, had always been within easy reach, water.
Only 34 percent of Ethiopians have access to a reliable water supply. Some travel for up to six hours a day to fetch some or,even worse, have to use pond water polluted by human waste, subject to the spread of disease.
Worldwide, about 768 million people—two and a half times the U.S.population—don’t have access to safe drinking water. So just imagine if we could just pull water out of thin air? That’s what Vittori and Vogler asked once they saw the severe problem and promised to take action.Their firm,Architecture and Vision, has since come up with Warka Water,a grand palm-like structure that may look like something you’d see in a modern art museum, but it’s been designed to harvest water from the air.
Warka Water, which is named after an Ethiopian fig tree,is composed of a 30-foot bamboo frame containing a fog-harvesting nylon net that can catch water easily, can be easily lowered for repairs and allow communities to measure the water level.Collecting water through condensation is hardly a new technique, but the creators of Warka Water say their tree-inspired design is more effective, maximizing surface and perfecting every angle to produce up to 26 gallons of drinkable water a day—enough for a family of seven.
Western organizations have been working to provide clean water access in Africa for decades,so Warka Water joins a very long list of earlier attempts. So far,high-tech solutions, like the once promising Playpump, have failed, mostly due to high costs and maintenance issues.
This is where Warka Water stands apart—a lower-tech solution that is easy to repair and far more affordable than digging wells in the rocky Ethiopian plateau.
1.What does the underlined phrase “subject to” in the third paragraph most probably mean?
A.owing to B.opposite to
C.sensitive to D.giving rise to
2.Warka Water is designed mainly to .
A.gather clean water efficiently
B.reduce water supply costs
C.simplify maintenance
D.preserve water supplies
3.According to the sixth paragraph, what caused Playpump to fail?
A.Lack of advanced technology
B.Unsuccessful designs
C.Lack of money and maintenance issues
D.Unreasonable structures

Children who read for pleasure at the age of 10 have far higher vocabulary scores by the age of 42.
Researchers at the Institute of Education(IOE)have found that the most crazy childhood readers score far higher on vocabulary tests 30 years later. The new study suggests that children who read for pleasure carry the intellectual(智力的)benefits with them far into adulthood.
“The long-term influence of reading for pleasure on vocabulary that we have identified may be because the frequent childhood readers continued to read throughout their twenties and thirties,”says lead author Professor Alice Sullivan at the IOE.Researchers followed 9,400 British people from the age of 10 up to 42.Their vocabulary was tested using a simple quiz which asked participants to match up words to the most similar meaning.
Those who had regularly read for pleasure at 10 scored 67 percent at the age of 42,while infrequent childhood readers scored only 51 percent.
The IOE study also found that what people chose to read as adults mattered as much as how often they read. The greatest improvements between ages 16 and 42 were made by readers of ‘elegant’ fictions such as Booker Prize winning novels. And they found that readers of quality newspapers, including online versions, made more progress in vocabulary throughout their lives than those who read tabloids.
In addition, generally speaking, the adult readers who especially read broadsheets(寬幅印刷品)scored 76 percent on the assessment compared to 57 percent amongst those who didn’t.
1.Why did frequent childhood readers have higher vocabulary scores?
A.Because they are born intelligent.
B.Because they formed the consistent reading habit.
C.Because they were crazy about pleasure.
D.Because they had a comfortable childhood.
2.What may not affect the adult readers’ vocabulary scores?
A.The contents of reading.
B.The design of the page.
C.Versions online or not.
D.The frequency of reading.
3.What does the underlined word“tabloids”mean in the text?
A.Newspapers of low quality.
B.Newspapers of high quality.
C.Elegant fictions.
D.Large vocabulary.
4.What does the text mainly tell us?
A.Intelligence has a great influence on vocabulary.
B.Reading materials matter much for children.
C.Broadsheet newspapers are best for boosting vocabulary.
D.Children who read for pleasure have larger vocabulary when they grow up.

Ask someone what they have done to help the environment recently and they will almost certainly mention recycling.Recycling in the home is very important of course. However, being forced to recycle often means we already have more material than we need.We are dealing with the results of that overconsumption in the greenest way,but it would be far better if we did not need to bring so much material home in the first place.
The total amount of packaging increased by 12% between 1999 and 2005.It now makes up a third of a typical household’s waste in the UK.In many supermarkets nowadays food items are packaged twice with plastic and cardboard.
Too much packaging is doing serious damage to the environment. The UK,for example,is running out of it for carrying this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt,it gives off greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect.Recycling helps, but the process itself uses energy. The solution is not to produce such items in the first place.Food waste is a serious problem, too.Too many supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they need. However,a few of them are coming round to the idea that this cannot continue and encouraging customers to reuse their plastic bags.
But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us.We have learned to associate packaging with quality. We have learned to think that something unpackaged is of poor quality. This is especially true of food. But it also applies to a wide range of consumer products, which often have far more packaging than necessary.
There are signs of hope.As more of us recycle,we are beginning to realize just how much unnecessary material we are collecting. We need to face the wastefulness of our consumer culture, but we have a mountain to climb.
1.The author uses figures in Paragraph 2 to show .
A.the tendency of cutting household waste
B.the increase of packaging recycling
C.the rapid growth of supermarkets
D.the fact of packaging overuse
2.According to the text,recycling .
A.helps control the greenhouse effect
B.means burning packaging for energy
C.is the solution to gas shortage
D.leads to a waste of land
3.What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?
A.Unpackaged products are of bad quality.
B.Supermarkets care more about packaging.
C.It is improper to judge quality by packaging.
D.Other products are better packaged than food.
4.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Fighting wastefulness is difficult.
B.Needless material is mostly recycled.
C.People like collecting recyclable waste.
D.The author is proud of their consumer culture.

Every year there are changes in climate in different parts of the world. Some of these changes are due to natural causes. However, some climate changes are caused by air pollution and these changes may increase.
If the pollution affects the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, the results are likely to be serious. There is only a small part of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. But it has an important function in keeping the balance between radiation from the sun entering the atmosphere and radiation leaving the Earth. Some of the radiation is absorbed by the Earth and some is radiated back into the atmosphere. The carbon dioxide in the atmosphere prevents some of the radiation from leaving the atmosphere. Thus the heat remains in the atmosphere and carbon dioxide helps to prevent the temperature of the Earth from falling.
If the proportion(比例)of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is increased as a result of air pollution, the temperature of the atmosphere may rise. This might cause the ice in the North and South to melt.If this happened, the sea level could rise and parts of the Earth would be flooded. This is not quite likely but the possibility exists.
There is also a fairly strong possibility that the dust level in the atmosphere will rise as a result of industrial pollution. This dust pollution will reflect sunlight back onto space. If this happens, less sunlight will reach the Earth and the temperature will fall.
Another danger comes from the destruction(破壞)of the Earth’s vegetation(植物)such as the forest of Brazil, which is being cleared away for farmland and cities.Trees use carbon dioxide and their destruction may upset the balance of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
1.The main purpose of the passage is to tell us that .
A.the climate of the earth is always changing
B.air pollution has greatly affected the climate of the world
C.carbon dioxide has something to do with climate changes
D.the climate of the world is subjected to(使受到)dangers from air pollution
2.From this passage we learn that carbon dioxide .
A.helps to prevent the temperature of the Earth from rising
B.keeps much of the sun’s radiation from entering the atmosphere
C.plays an important part in keeping the balance of the temperature of the Earth
D.is one of natural causes of climate changes
3.Judging from this passage,if the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere went down, the temperature of the Earth would .
A.become higher B.either rise or fall
C.become lower D.neither rise nor fall
4.Which of the following is not the possible serious outcome if air pollution is related to climate changes?
A.Parts of the Earth would be flooded one day.
B.More sunlight would reach the Earth.
C.The temperature of the Earth might rise.
D.The Earth’s vegetation might be destroyed.
