Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver,I was driving to my parents’ home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register(收款臺),I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.
I took off,but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend’s. We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car,the husband gave me his business card.
I wrote him and his wife a thank?you note for helping me. Soon afterward,I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.
Years later,I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon,I returned to my car and found that I’d left the lights on all day,and the battery(電池) was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership—a shop selling cars—was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom. “Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?” I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would accept no payment,so when I got home,I wrote them a note to say thanks. I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank you,and it meant a lot,he said.
“Thank you”—two powerful words. They’re easy to say and mean so much.
1.The author planned to stop at Oklahoma City ______.
A.to visit a friend
B.to see his parents
C.to pay at the cash register
D.to have more gas for his car
2.The underlined phrase “took off” in Paragraph 2 means “________”.
A.turned off B.moved off
C.put up D.set up
3.What happened when the author found smoke coming out of his car?
A.He had it pulled back to the gas station.
B.The couple sent him a business card.
C.The couple offered to help him.
D.He called his friend for help.
4.The battery of the author’s car was dead because ________.
A.something went wrong with the lights
B.the meeting lasted a whole day
C.he forgot to turn off the lights
D.he drove too long a distance

One night in March 1999, a man was driving from California to Oregon, US, to visit some friends. He had stopped his car to have some food when he started to hear strange noises. Turning on the headlights, he saw an 8-foot-tall creature covered in thick, dark hair. The creature stared at him for a minute, turned in the road and walked off slowly into the woods.
In the past 50 years alone, there have been thousands of reported sightings of similar creatures in the US, Canada, the Himalayas(喜馬拉雅山地區(qū))and even Hubei Province in China. The creature is known as bigfoot.
Bigfoot is said to be a very tall(between 2 and 4. 5 metres), ape-like(類人猿似的)creature that is covered in hair and walks upright on two legs. It is very wary(警惕的)of human beings.
Believers think bigfoot is a direct descendent(后代)of ancient gigantopithecus(巨猿). But it remains one of the planet’s undiscovered secrets. There is a little evidence(證據(jù))to support the believers’ theory: traces of hair, footprints and body prints as well as the reported sightings. Some people have even showed what they say with photos or films of bigfoot.
But so far, no one has found bones or any other definite proof that the giant creature exists.
As a result many people believe the evidence is just part of a big trick.
The footprints are easy to make and they say: all you need to do is to make two large feet out of plaster(石膏), attach them to the bottom of your shoes and walk with big steps. As for the photos and films, they are just people dressed in ape suits.
They also say the sightings are not real, just people making mistakes. For example, bigfoot could be a bear living in the wild that sometimes stands up on its back legs.
1.So far what we can be sure about is that_______.
A. there exist savages(野人)in several places in the world
B. there are some traces of hair, footprints and body prints of the “bigfoot”
C. bigfoot is a direct descendent of ancient gigantopithecus
D. all the big foot discovered have the same look
2.It was in______ that man first found the ape-like creature.
A. 1999
B. the 1960’s
C. the 1950’s
D. the 1940’s
3.We can infer from the article that some people _______bigfoot’s existence.
A. may fool the world into believing
B. have definite evidences to prove
C. refuse to believe
D. will soon offer proofs of
4.If bigfoot is just a misunderstanding, what they saw might NOT be________.
A. apes
B. bears
C. gigantopithecus
D. people dressed in animal skins

There are two main types of non?verbal communication. Body language is the first. Body language is body movements that depend on a person’s attitude or feelings. Body language includes the way people walk, how they stand, and their facial features. In other words, any kind of meaning is shown by a person’s attitude or body movements. For example, when a boy is sad he may drop his head and walk slowly. Or,if a girl is happy, she might run and jump or stand up straight and put her hands in the air. People don’t have to say anything to show how they feel about things. The colour of people’s skin may even show how they feel. For example,if people with light coloured skin get embarrassed, their skin may turn red,or if they are worried, they might get pale. Body language can be voluntary(主動的) or involuntary(無意識的).An interesting fact is that blind children will smile when happy even though they have never seen a smile.
The next main type of non?verbal communication is gestures. Gestures are communications like facial expressions, hand signals, eye gazing, and body postures. Examples include smiles, handshakes, waving, and raising certain fingers to say something. For instance,if you saw a friend at a noisy carnival, you might smile and wave at your friend. You might also point at the Ferris wheel if you wanted to meet your friend there. You could do all of these things without saying a word. Another great example is in baseball when the catcher signals to the pitcher the kind of pitch to use for the batter that is up.
1.If a boy passes the final exam he ________.
A.might not raise his head
B.might walk home slowly
C.might run home singing
D.might not stand there straight
2.When someone gets pale he is most likely to be ______.
A.a(chǎn)nxious B.surprised
C.embarrassed D.disappointed
3.Which one of the following is WRONG according to this passage?
A.Body language is mainly expressed by one’s body movements.
B.The blind children can also smile when they are glad.
C.You can also express yourself without saying a word in baseball.
D.Gestures can be shown only by one’s hands.
4.All the following are gestures except ________.
A.hand signals B.coloured skin
C.hand wave D.eye gazing
