Have you ever run into a careless cell phone user on the street? Perhaps they were busy talking, texting or checking updates on WeChat (微信) without looking at what was going on around them. As the number of this new “species” of human has kept rising, they have been given a new name — phubbers (低頭族).

Recently, a cartoon created by students from China Central Academy of Fine Arts put this group of people under the spotlight. In the short film, phubbers with various social identities bury themselves in their phones. A doctor plays with his cell phone while letting his patient die, a pretty woman takes selfie (自拍) in front of a car accident site, and a father loses his child without knowing about it while using his mobile phone. A chain of similar events eventually leads to the destruction of the world.

Although the ending sounds overstated, the damage phubbing can bring is real. Your health is the first to bear the effect and result of it. “Constantly bending your head to check your cell phone could damage your neck,” Guangming Daily quoted doctors as saying. “The neck is like a rope that breaks after long-term stretching.” Also, staring at cell phones for long periods of time will damage your eyesight gradually, according to the report.

But that’s not all. Being a phubber could also damage your social skills and drive you away from your friends and family. At reunions with family or friends, many people tend to stick to their cell phones while others are chatting happily with each other and this creates a strange atmosphere, Qilu Evening News reported.

It can also cost you your life. There have been lots of reports on phubbers who fell to their death, suffered accidents, and were robbed of their cell phones in broad daylight.

1.For what purpose does the author give the example of a cartoon in Para. 2?

A. To inform people of the bad effects of phubbing.

B. To advertise the cartoon made by students.

C. To indicate the world will finally be destroyed by phubbers.

D. To warn doctors against using cell phones while treating patients.

2.Which of the following is NOT a risk(危險)a phubber may have?

A. His social skills could be affected.

B. His neck and eyesight will be gradually harmed.

C. He will cause the destruction of the world.

D. He might get separated from his friends and family.

3.Which of the following may be the author’s attitude towards phubbing?

A. Supportive.B. Opposed.C. Optimistic.D. Objective.

4.What may the passage talk about next?

A. Advice on how to use WeChat.

B. People addicted to phubbing.

C. Measures to reduce the risks(危害) of phubbing.

D. Results of phubbing.

It's hard to avoid looking like a fool on April Fool's Day. On April 1 each year, people play tricks on each other. These tricks are usually silly rather than mean. Classmates sometimes tie each other's shoelaces to their chairs.Teachers might hand out an impossibly difficult surprise test that scares students before they realize it's only a joke. Newspapers announce fake(假的) contests (such as "Win an elephant!") and report on fake stories (like "UFO" lands in New York City).

Forget gifts, songs and special foods—those are for the other holidays of the year. On April Fool's Day, the only tradition is to laugh (and maybe to cause a little bit of trouble).

One April Fool's Day, when I was in high school, a group of students in my class played a very clever and funny trick on the teachers. They bought some chickens and set them free in our school cafeteria. The chickens ran all round the school, in and out of classrooms and under our feet. Feathers were flying everywhere.

Teachers began running after the chickens, trying to catch them. Finally, they caught four of them. But the chickens were wearing numbered tags (商標) around their necks, and the teachers discovered that they had only caught chickens No.1, 2, 3, and 5.Where was chicken No.4? The teachers looked and looked. They couldn't find another chicken. After a few hours, they realized that the students had played another joke on them: There were only four chickens in the first place! They've been tricked by the numbers on the chickens.

It's been a long time since I was in high school, but that April Fool's Day remains one of my favorite memories from those years.

1.What can we infer from the first paragraph on April Fool's Day?

A. Everyone is hard to avoid being fooled on April Fool's Day.

B. Students play jokes on teachers on April Fool's Day.

C. Teachers play tricks on students on April Fool's Day.

D. Newspapers often cheat people.

2.Why did students set chickens free?

A. They wanted to let chickens free.

B. They wanted to let chickens run all round the school.

C. They wanted to see feathers flying.

D. They wanted to play a trick on teachers.

3.How many jokes did the students play on teachers?

A. One.B. Two.C. Three.D. Four.

4.What's the title of the passage?

A. An unforgettable April Fool's Day

B. April Fool's Day

C. The origin of April Fool's Day

D. What do people do on April Fool's Day?

At first, the earth’s surface(表面) layer (層) was made up of huge blocks of hard, solid rocks. Then slowly, the rocks broke up into smaller and smaller pieces. Finally stones, pebbles (卵石) and grains of sand were formed. Many sorts of plants and animals lived and died on the surface of the earth. Their remains mixed up with the stones, pebbles and formed soil. The outmost layer of the earth is soil.

There are many ways in which large pieces of rock break into smaller ones. Wind, water, heat and cold help to break up rocks. When winds blow grains of sand against a large rock for a long time, the softer layers of the rock are slowly worn away. These leave holes and cracks (裂縫) in the rock, which become bigger and finally the rock breaks up into smaller pieces.

The moving water of streams and rivers also helps to break up rocks. As the water moves along, it carries with it small pieces of rock. These rub the larger ones. Thus, the larger rocks are worn down to smaller pieces.

The heat of the sun is also helpful to breaking up rocks. When the sun shines, the rocks become very hot. If these rocks are suddenly cooled, they may crack. Ice also plays a part in making soil. Water in the cracks can turn into ice in cold weather. As this happens, it becomes bigger and the cracks become wider, and finally break into smaller pieces.

1.According to the passage, soil ________.

A. forms very slowly

B. is a mixture of stones, pebbles and sand

C. makes up the layers of the earth

D. is becoming smaller and smaller

2.How many factors are mentioned in helping break up rocks?

A. Three.B. Four.C. Five.D. More than five.

3.Which of the following speeds up(加速) the breaks of rocks most?

A. Hot weather.

B. Cold water.

C. Sharp changes in temperature.

D. More dead plants in the cracks.

4.Which of the following is NOT true?

A. The remains of many plants and animals formed soil.

B. If a large rock never moves, it will never break up.

C. Even if a large rock never moves, it will break up.

D. Ice in the cracks helps to break up rocks.

The Winner’s Guide to Success

How do successful people think? What helps them to make success? To find out the answers, an American scholar recently visited some of the most successful people in America. 1.

Be responsible for yourself

Sometimes you may want to blame(責備) others for your failure to get ahead. 2. You’re saying, “You have more control over my life than I do.”

Live life “on purpose”

Almost all successful people live life “on purpose”— they are doing what they believe they should and want to do. When you live your life on purpose, you’ll try your best to do your job or study as well as you can. You love what you do and you can find pleasure in what you do.

Write a plan

It is very difficult trying to get what you want without a good plan. 3. A good plan is like a map to you. Without this “map”, you may waste your time, money and also your energy; while with the “map” you’ll enjoy the “trip” and get what you want in the shortest possible time.

Be willing to pay the price

Nothing great is easy to get. So you must be ready to work hard — even harder than you have ever done. If you are not willing to pay the price, you won’t get anything valuable.

Never give up

4. When you are doing something, you must tell yourself again and again: Giving up is worse than failure because failure can be the mother of success, but giving up means the death of hope.

5.

Once an American writer was writing a novel. He could not have a good ending for his book until one night when he had a very good idea. He was so excited that he made a phone call to one of his best friends. “I’ve got a perfect idea,” he said, “I’ll put it down later and show it to you.” But he never did, because he died that night. His book was left without a perfect ending. So remember, do what you can right away. Never delay at all.

A. It is just like trying to drive through strange roads to a city far away.

B. It seems to us that everyone knows this. But it is easier said than done.

C. Some people achieve success much later in life because they fail to realize earlier the importance of hard work.

D. In fact, when you say someone or something outside of yourself is stopping you from making success, you’re giving away your own power.

E. Someone else’s opinion of you doesn’t have to become your reality.

F. Don’t delay.

G. Here are some keys to success that they give.
