5.I was i n a terrible mood. Two of my friends had gone to the movies the night before and hadn't invited me.I was in my room thinking of ways to make them sorry when my father came in."Want to go for a ride, today,Beck? It's a beautiful day."
"No!Leave me alone!"Those were the last words I said to him that morning.
My friends called and invited me to go to the mall with them a few hours later.I forgot to be mad at them and when I came home to find a note on the table. My mother put it where I would be sure to see it."Dad has had an accident. Please meet us at Highland Park Hospital".
When I reached the hospital,my mother came out and told me my father's injuries were extensive."Your father told the driver to leave him alone and just call 911,thank God!If he had moved Daddy, there's no telling what might have happened.A broken rib(肋骨)might have pierced(穿透)a lung…"
My mother may have said more, but I didn't hear.I didn't hear anything except those terrible words:Leave me alone. My dad said them to save himself from being hurt more. How much had I hurt him when I hurled those words at him earlier in the day?

"Daddy…I am so sorry…"
"It's okay,sweetheart.I'll be okay."
"No,"I said,"I mean about what I said to you that day.You know, that morning?"
My father could no more tell a lie than he could fly.He looked at me and said."Sweetheart,I don't remember anything about that day,not before, during or after the accident. But I remember kissing you goodnight the night before."He managed a weak smile.

3.A recent study shows that boys and girls learn differently. So ma ybe we can maximize (最大化)learning by teaching them in single gender (性別) programs.
First, boys and girls see differently.Boys interpret the world as objects moving through space. In their opinion,a good teacher should move around the room constantly and be that object.
The male eye is usually drawn to cooler colors like silver, blue, black, grey, and brown. It's no accident boys tend to create pictures of moving objects like spaceships, cars, and trucks in dark colors instead of drawing a happy colorful family, like girls in their class. The fem ale eye,on the other hand,is drawn to textures(質地) and colors. They tend to like warmer colors-red,yellow,orange,and visuals with more details, like faces.Girls work well in circles, faci ng each other.Using descriptive(描寫性的) phrases in presentations or lots of colors on the chalkboard can help get their attention.
Boys and girls also hear differently. When someone speaks in a loud tone, girls interpret it as yelling. They think you're mad and should quiet down.Girls are more sensitive to sounds.Girls'teachers should notice the tone of their voices.Boys'teachers should sound matter of fact, even excited.
Boys'nervous systems cause them to be more alert when they're standing, moving, and the room temperature is around 20℃.Stress in boys tends to increase blood flow to their brains,a process that helps them stay focused. This won't work for girls, who are more focused seated in a warmer room around 25℃.Girls also respond to stress differently. When exposed to a threat, blood goes to their guts(內臟),leaving them feeling nervous or anxious.

2.That cold January night,I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was walking home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theater. With opening night only a week away,I was still learning my lines.I was having trouble dealing with my part-time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time.As I walked,I thought seriously about giving up both acting and San Francisco.City life had become too much for me.
As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings,I felt very small and cold.I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers.Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets.
About a block from my apartment,I heard a sound behind me.I turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun.The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight.Still, the noise had made me nervous,so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been.It had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk.
Suddenly I wasn't cold or tired any more.I ran out of the door and back to where I'd heard the noise.Although I searched the sidewalk anxiously for fifteen minutes,my wallet was nowhere to be found.

It was nearly 3 a.m.by the time I got into bed.I wouldn't get much sleep that night, but I had got my wallet back.I also had got back some enjoyment of city life.I realized that the city couldn't be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other.

1.Would you eat a ready meal from the fridge rather than cook from scratch?Have you been doing internet shopping rather than going to the stores? What can't you be bothered to do?
A study into how lazy British people are has found more than half of adults are so lazy they'd catch the lift rather than climb two flights of stairs.
Just over 2000 people were quizzed by independent researchers at Nuffield Health,Britain's largest health charity. The results were astonishing.
About one in six people surveyed said if their remote control was broken, they would continue watching the same channel rather than get up.
More than one third of those questioned said they would not run to catch a bus.Worryingly,of the 654 respondents with children,64% said they were often too tired to play with them.

"If we don't start to take control of this problem,a whole generation will become too unfit to perform even the most rudimentary of tasks."
And Scotland's largest city,Glasgow, was shamed as the most inactive city in the UK,with 75% surveyed admitting they do not get enough exercise, followed closely by Birmingham and Southampton, both with 67%.
The results cause serious challenges for the National Health Service, where obesity-related illnesses such as heart disease and cancer have been on a steady increase for the past 40 years and are costing billions of pounds every year.

20.You're rushing to work and a man ahead of you collapses on the sidewalk.Do you stop to help?In a study of by-standers,it was found that some people avert their gaze and keep on  walking rather than stop and get involved.
"There is a tendency to decide that no action is needed."says a psychologist."The first thoughts that pop into your mind often keep you from offering help.In order to take action, you have to work against them."Here are some common thoughts that might prevent you from helping.

18.There is a boy called Bill in my gym class who has unbearably yellow teeth that almost make everyone feel unpleasant.Recently another boy told Bill that he should"go Ajax"his teeth.Bill was crushed.If the other boy had been thinking,he would have realized that there is a better way to handle such a situation.He could have dealt with it with tact.He could have showed this hurtful truth in a more careful,sensitive way-that's"tact".
If a person isn't sensitive to another's feelings,there is no way he or she can be tactful.Yesterday,my 5-year-old brother proudly announced that he had cleaned the screen on our television set.Unfortunately,he used furniture polish,which produced an oily film on the television screen.My mother smiled arid thanked him for his efforts-and then showed how to clean the screen properly.Her sensitivity enables my brother to keep his self-respect.Yet,sensitivity alone does not make tact.
"Tactfulness"also requires"truthfulness".Doctors,for example must be truthful.If a patient has just been disabled in an accident,a tactful doctor will tell the truth-but express it with sensitivity.The doctor may try to give the patient hope by telling them curing techniques under study or about advanced equipment now available.Doctors must use tact with patients'relatives as well.Instead of bluntly saying,"Your husband is disabled,"a doctor might say,"I'm sorry,but your husband has lost feeling in his legs and…"
Tact should not be confused with trickery.Trickery occurs when a nurse is about to give a patient an injection(注射) and says,"This won't hurt a bit."Instead of trickery,the nurse might guarantee the patient that the discomfort of the injection is a small thing compared to the benefits of it.It would also be thoughtful for the nurse to tell the patients about some of these benefits.
Tact is a wonderful skill to have,and tactful people are usually admired and respected.Without tact our society would become an intolerable place to live in.

68.The underlined word"crushed"in the first paragraph probably meansD.

17.In our culture,the sources of what we call a sense of"mastery"-feeling important and worthwhile-and the sources of what we call a sense of"pleasure"-finding life enjoyable-are not always the same.Women often are told"You can't have it all."Sometimes what the speaker really is saying is:"You choose a career,so you can't expect to have closer relationships or a happy family life."or"You have a wonderful husband and children-what's all this about wanting a career?"But women need to understand and develop both aspects of well-being,if they are to feel good about themselves.
Our study shows that,for women,well-being(康樂) has two aspects.One is mastery,which includes self-respect,a sense of control over your life,and low levels of anxiety and depression.Mastery is closely related to the"doing"side of life,to work and activity.Pleasure is the other aspect,and it is made up of happiness,satisfaction and optimism.It is tied more closely to the"feeling"side of life.The two are independent of each other.A woman could be high in mastery and low in pleasure,and vice versa (反之亦然).For example,a woman who has a good job,but whose mother has just died,might be feeling very good about herself and in control of her work life,but the pleasure side could be damaged for a time.
The concepts of mastery and pleasure can help us identify the sources of well-being for women,and correct past mistakes.In the past,women were encouraged to look only at the feeling side of life as the source of all well-being.But we know that both mastery and pleasure are important.And mastery seems to be achieved largely through work.In our study,all the groups of employed women are valued significantly higher in mastery than women who are not employed.
A woman's well-being is developed when she takes on multiple (多項的) roles.At least?by middle adulthood,the women who are involved in a combination of roles-marriages,motherhood,and employment-are the highest in well-being,in spite of warnings about stress and strain.

B.she will be more successful in her career
C.her chances of getting promoted will be greater
D.it will be easier for her to overcome stress and strain
