The technique can lead to new ways to produce medicines, the researchers from the universities of Istanbul and Hawaii hope.

As part of an effort to improve treatments for life-threatening illnesses, a team of scientists have created rabbits that glow(發(fā)光) in the dark.

Their efforts produced two rabbits out of a litter of eight that went from being a normal, fluffy white to glowing green in the dark. The rabbits were born at the University of Istanbul as part of a collaboration(合作) between scientists from universities in Turkey and Hawaii.

The rabbits glow to show that a genetic manipulation technique can work efficiently, though the specific color is more cosmetic than scientific. "The green is not important at all – it's just a marker to show the experiment can be done successfully," said University of Hawaii associate professor Stefan Moisyadi.

To produce the glowing effect, researchers injected jellyfish DNA into a mother rabbit's embryos. Those altered embryos(胚胎). Those altered embryos were then inserted back into the mother. Similar experiments have resulted in glowing cockroaches and cats.

Eventually, the researchers hope the technique can lead to new ways to produce medicines, Moisyadi said. “The final goal is to develop animals that act as barrier reactive to produce beneficial molecules in their milk that

can be cheaply extracted, especially in countries that can’t afford big pharma plants that make drugs, that usually cost $1bn to build, and be able to produce their own protein-based medication in animals," Moisyadi said.

The rabbits are expected to have the same life span as their non-glowing counterparts(副本), but Moisyadi said he understands people can object to this kind of experimentation involving live animals.

"To the people against, I say: think about, what are the benefits and what are the injuries?" Moisyadi said. "And if the benefits outweigh the injuries, let's go with the benefits."

Moisyadi, a native of Turkey who is now with the University of Hawaii, started developing the project in 2006, and researchers are now waiting to see if pregnant sheep produce similar results.

1.Moisyadi’s attitude towards this kind of experiment is .

A. doubtful.

B. indifferent.

C. supportive.

D. objective.

2.How did glowing effect produce?

A. It was just the result of genetic selection.

B. Put a light into a mother rabbit’s embryos.

C. Injected glowing cats DNA into a mother rabbit’s embryos.

D. Injected Jellyfish DNA into a mother rabbit’s embryos.

3.The final goal of this research is .

A. To make animals cuter.

B. To make nights brighter.

C. To produce all kinds of glowing animals.

D. To produce beneficial molecules in animals’ milk.

4.What can we learn according to the passage?

A. The life span of glowing rabbits is much shorter than that of non-glowing ones.

B. The glowing rabbits were born only at the University pf Hawaii.

C. Scientists have created glowing cockroaches and cats before.

D. Three rabbits out of eight can glow in the experiment.

BEIJING, China ---Pollution in China remains very serious as the country's rapid economic growth brings new environmental problems, a minister said Saturday.

Vice Environment Minister Zhang Lijun said China has made progress on environmental protection, but admitted that its rapid economic growth over the past decade has had a negative effect on the environment.

"Our rapid economic development has continuously brought our country new environmental problems, particularly dangerous chemicals, electronic waste and so on. These environmental pollutants (污染物) bring new problems and affect human health," Zhang told a news conference.

He said that emissions(排放)of traditional pollutants remain high and some areas have failed to meet government standards.

China has pledged to continue reducing emissions this year of three key air pollutants--- ammonia nitrogen, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide. The government has also promised to bring down demand for chemical oxygen---a measure of water pollution by l.5 percent from the 2010 levels.

In the last five years, there were 912 "environmental emergencies" involving heavy metal pollution, including several well-publicized instances of mass contamination, Zhang said. Thousands of children were affected by lead poisoning in several provinces in 2009 and 2010 because they lived near metal smelters or battery factories.

The minister noted that rapid development in the next five years would increase the need for China to improve environmental protection and shift to a more sustainable(可持續(xù)的) model of economic development from its dependence on industries which consume huge quantities of energy.

China is focusing on clean energy, including solar, wind and nuclear power, as one way to reduce its dependence on coal, which generates three-quarters of its electricity and is also used for winter heating in northern cities. China also hopes the strategy will reduce its demand for oil and gas and increase economic growth and jobs.

Zhang told reporters there was no plan to adjust China's overall strategy for nuclear development but he said Beijing will learn lessons from Japan after a violent earthquake resulted in a radioactive leak(放射能泄露).

"Some lessons we learn from Japan will be considered in the making of China's nuclear power plans," he said. "But China will not change its determination and plan for developing nuclear power."

1.How can China do to solve the pollution problem according to the minister?

A. China must slow its economic development.

B. China require to ask industries to meet government standards.

C. China should tell people how to protect the environment.

D. China require to transform tis economic development model.

4.What do the last four paragraphs mainly talk about?

A. China’s economic development will shift to depend on clean energy.

Getting on the school bus, like the possible dangers around the home, getting on the school bus can also bring its own set of dangers. There are several important safety measures that parents should be aware of when it comes to bus safety.

Parents should always make sure that someone is taking charge of children at the bus stop to make certain clear ground rules which are in place and are being followed—particularly rules that forbid horseplay in and around the street.

Teach children to ask the bus driver for help in picking up anything they may have dropped around the bus, as children getting dropped articles are often hit by the bus or another vehicle because they are not seen by the bus driver or by oncoming traffic.

Children should be asked to take five large steps away from the bus when they get it off, and make sure that the bus driver can see you and look you directly in the eyes to signal it is OK to cross the street. It is still very important that children also look both ways as they cross the street.

Inform children that they must never speak to any stranger who talks with them first and that they must never accept a ride from any person unless their parents tell them directly that it is OK. Teach kids that adults should ask other adults for help, not kids. If an adult asks a kid for help, that child should get another adult.

If for any reason a child feels uncomfortable or unsafe at the bus stop they need to bring it to a parent’s or caregiver’s attention.

Remember, planning ahead is always the best safety measure. Follow these rules and your family will be off danger!
