【題目】My 17-year-old daughter went off to college and having her away from home brought back memories of watching Peter Pan when she was little. In the classic TV production, one scene in particular impressed me: when Mrs. Darling puts her children into bed. As she turns off the last of the night light, she takes one last look at the bedroom and says, “Dear night lights, protect my sleeping children.” As a mother, I know how much she loves her children.

It has been several weeks since we took our daughter to college and she seems to be adjusting well after a short period of homesickness. For us, though, it’s another story. Like most parents, I love checking in on my children at night. But now she’s gone, and I find nighttimes the hardest. I miss her most at night.

In my neighborhood, most of the parents whose kids are off to college are dealing with similar melancholy. My husband is filled with anxiety. One friend talked about getting this sick feeling in her stomach as she prepared for the college drop-off. We complained that many of us were too busy to truly enjoy being with our children while we had them.

For us moms, seeing Toy Story 3 only made the sadness worse as we watched the character Andy, who is the same age as our kids, say goodbye to his childhood as he prepares to leave for college. And it’s not just “first-time” parents like me. Two moms who have kids already well into college said the separation didn’t get any easier. “You feel like something has been taken away from inside you” said one of them.

I imagine things will get easier with time, especially as I see my daughter adjust to college life. Meanwhile, as I keep my cell phone close to me in bed and text my daughter goodnight and sweet dreams every night, I like to think that messages serve as a night light that keeps her safe.

1The writer was deeply impressed by the scene in Peter Pan because ________.

A. she watched the scene with her daughter

B. the scene was very exciting and interesting

C. the scene taught her and her daughter a good lesson

D. the scene showed a mother’s deep love for her children

2After her daughter went to college, the writer ________.

A. realized she hadn’t done enough for her daughter

B. often cried as she missed her daughter so much

C. failed to have a good sleep every night

D. didn’t get used to the change for a long time

3What is the underlined word “melancholy” in Paragraph 3 similar in meaning to?

A. Happiness. B. Sadness.

C. Excitement. D. Anger.

4According to the last paragraph, why did the writer keep her cell phone close to her in bed?

A. To say good night to her daughter.

B. To wait for her daughter’s calls.

C. To wait for her daughter’s messages.

D. To call her daughter any time.

【題目】What makes you grow? While rolling many ideas around in my head lo write this piece. I narrowed my focus a bit and chose: family and sense of purpose.

My family keeps me excited to be alive-beginning the day with a morning kiss from the man I love. He is there to listen and guide, to laugh and sigh, to explore and relax, and to make each day meaningful. Together we have three delightful children. Even though they have caused various gray hairs over the years, they have also provided love and laughter.

Friends fall into the family category (范疇) as well. Although they are not cut of the same cloth, they are part of the same quilt. True friends are often as giving .and maybe even more giving as family. Even though our friends enter our life later than our family, strong relation exists. In fact, sometimes friends know us better than family.

The second drive is a sense of purpose. While impossible to describe, it is very easy to picture as we think of even thing of value that touches us. A purpose may be a happy family, home life, and so on. Actually in most cases it is a combination of all these as they affect our lives deeply.

Purpose is new, fresh, exciting and always changing. You’re taking up the same job each day except sometimes challenged. I always wanted to be a teacher, for example, and I chose junior high French. However, over the years my tasks changed so that I had various opportunities to teach K-12 and beyond in a wide range of subjects, levels and school districts. I remained in the same profession for more than 40 years but never in the same setting.

1What did the author do before writing the article?

A. She chose her own family as the main topic for writing.

B. She studied many families in detail for some ideas.

C. She took some concerned drives into consideration.

D. She had a quick mind in writing.

2What’s the author’s attitude to her marriage?

A. Curious. B. Puzzled.

C. Pessimistic. D. Satisfied.

3What is the closest meaning of the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3?

A. Though not born into a family, friends are considered life mates.

B. Friends wear different clothes but sleep on the same bed.

C. A friend in need is a friend indeed.

D. Blood is thicker than water.

【題目】閱讀填空
I used to be the messiest person alive. Over the years, through watching others and by trial and error, I have finally found ways to come up with plans, organize them and follow through with them.
Make an outline of everything you need to have and do to make your plan happen. Make a list of all of the steps that need to be accomplished and think about what needs to be done.
Detail everything thoroughly and read over it so you can start coming up with some mental solutions of how to carry out your plans.
You should ensure that if for some reason way one doesn't work, you have way two and way three to lean back on. Therefore, different ways are needed at hand. It's just a matter of being organized. Chances are that there is always more than one way of doing things, and chances are that if one of those ways doesn't work, one of the others will.
Committing yourself to finishing at least part if not all of your plan at once is also necessary. It will show that you not only have initiative to get things rolling, but that you are interested in the results obtained with making the move to get everything done.
If you make a commitment to finish before aspecific time, make sure that you carry that out, and be sure to do everything in the way you said you would, within the time-frame you set for yourself.
Don't try to tackle (處理) more things all at atime. All that does is delay your progress, distract you and make you lose your interest, motivation and energy.
Carrying out an effective plan requires being as organized as possible. You will only achieve this by sticking to the order of the plan and not deviating or trying to do more at a time.
Last but not the least, you should never abandon things mid-project. It will only annoy everyone around you including yourself. Unfinished plans are a waste of time, energy and, in some cases, even money.
So,don't be afraid of organization. The older we get,the more necessary it becomes to have the skills to follow through with confidence and to be able to carry through plans in an organized and manageable way. It pays to be organized, after all.

However, this might be misleading that one may believe all forms of homework are necessary. 2 (actual), only proper amount of homework in proper form is 3 (accept); some homework may not only fail 4 (help) the students, but on 5contrary bore them so much that they may lose their interest in studying. “Proper”homework, in my opinion, 6 (vary) in its forms, 7might be some extensive reading, a paper, or even just a game, as well as other ordinary exercise. 【題目】閱讀理解
After years of research and testing, the hybrid car was developed and put on the market. It' s an interesting and exciting new improvement in today' s world as we look for better ways to protect the quality of the air we breathe and conserve our natural resources.
The quality of our air is affected by many different things. But one of the largest sources of air pollution is the burning of fossil fuels such as coal and gasoline which is used to power a car' s engine. The EPA has set national standards to help control the level of harmful pollutants sent off into the air, and the automobile industry has acted by producing a hybrid car that uses less gas and therefore causes less pollution.
A hybrid car is a combination of a regular car that runs on gasoline and an electric car that is battery powered. Some people tend to think that since the hybrid car is partially electric, you have to plug it in to charge it. But that's not how it works. The 144-volt battery pack is actually recharged through the energy that is produced when the car's brakes are used. This is referred to as “regenerative braking”, because it generates electricity.
Although the hybrid car still runs on gasoline most of the time, this helps it use less gas than a regular car. When the driver stops at a traffic light, the engine automatically shuts off to save fuel. Then, as soon as the driver puts the car in gear and touches the gas pedal, the engine starts back up.
Have you ever ridden in a car with someone who ran out of gas? That probably wouldn't happen if you were riding in a hybrid car. It flashes a warning on its computer screen that says, “I am low on gas”. When it completely runs out, the warning reads, “YOU ARE NOW OUT OF GAS!” Then the electric power supply kicks in to let the driver travel a few more miles to a gas station.
(1)Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.The hybrid car will be put on the market.

A.it allows the car to come to a quick stop
B.it gives the driver a smoother ride
C.it produces energy to charge the battery
D.it can control the speed of the car
(4)Which of the following is right about the EPA?
A.They designed hybrid cars.
B.They outlawed (宣布……為不合法) the burning of fossil fuels.
C.They set important guidelines that help control pollution.
D.Their main purpose is to protect endangered plants and animals.
(5)Which of the following is the reason for developing hybrid cars?

In the United States, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what “keeping up with the Joneses” is about. It is the story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbors.
The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $ 125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighborhood outside New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbors.
It was like a race, but one could never finish his race because one was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They moved back to an apartment in New York City.
Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with rich lifestyle of their neighbors. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it “Keeping up with the Joneses” because “Jones” is a very common name in the United States. “Keeping up with the Joneses” came to mean keeping up with rich lifestyle of the people around you. Momand's series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years.
People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. And there are “Joneses” in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead.
(1)Some people want to keep up with the Joneses because they ________.
A.want to be as rich as their neighbors
B.want others to know or to think that they are rich
C.don't want others to know they are rich
D.want to be happy
(2)It can be inferred (推斷) from the story that rich people like to ________.
A.live outside New York City

(4)According to the writer, it is ________ to keep up with the Joneses.
