If you can speak English, you know a lot of English words. You can read, speak and understand. But there is another kind of language you need to know——the language of the body,a part of what is called non-verbal communication. All over the world, people “talk” with their eyes. Americans are more informal than the British. They like to be friendly. They use first name, they ask questions and they talk easily about themselves. When they sit down, they like to relax in their chairs and make themselves comfortable.
British people are more quiet. They take more time to make friends. They like to know you before they ask you home.
When British and American people meet someone for the first time, they shake hands. They do not usually shake hands with people they know well. Women sometimes kiss their women friends, and men kiss women friends (on one cheek only). When a man meets a man friend,he just smiles, and says “Hello”. Men do not kiss each other. Even fathers and sons do not often kiss each other.

【題目】The African elephant, the largest land animal remaining on earth , is of great importance to African ecosystem (生態(tài)系統(tǒng)).Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment. As a big plant-eater, it largely shapes the forest-and- savanna(大草原) surroundings in which it lives, therefore setting the terms of existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat(棲息地).

It is the elephant’s great desire for food that makes it a disturber of the environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day, it kills small trees and underbushes, and pulls branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces in both deep tropical forests and in the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas. In these open spaces are numerous plants in various stages of growth that attract a variety of other plant-eaters.

Take the rain forests for example. In their natural state, the spreading branches overhead shut out sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor. By pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants make open spaces, allowing new plants to grow on the forest floor. In such situations, the forests become suitable for large hoofed plant-eaters to move around and for small plant-eaters to get their food as well.

What worries scientists now is that the African elephant has become an endangered species. If the elephant disappears, scientists say, many other animals will also disappear from vast areas of forest and savanna, greatly changing and worsening the whole ecosystem.

1What is the passage mainly about?

A. Disappearance of African elephants.

B. Forests and savannas as habitats for African elephants.

C. The effect of African elephants’ search for food.

D. The eating habit of African elephants.

2What does the underlined phrase “setting the terms” most probably mean?

A. Fixing the time. B. Worsening the state.

C. Improving the quality. D. Deciding the conditions.

3What do we know about the open spaces in the passage?

A. They result from the destruction of rain forests.

B. They provide food mainly for African elephants.

C. They are home to many endangered animals.

D. They are attractive to plant-eating animals of different kinds.

4The passage is developed mainly by .

A. showing the effect and then explaining the causes

B. pointing out similarities and differences

C. describing the changes in space order

D. giving examples

【題目】We were on our way home from Houston one Saturday morning. We decided to stop at a local gas station to get coffee and something to snack on since it was a good hour and a half before we got home.

When we were done, we got back into our car and before I started it, we noticed a man standing outside in front of the building. He was a homeless man with worn clothes and it looked like he had gone in and gotten himself some coffee or something warm to drink since it was cold this time of the year. He must have not had enough money to get something to eat.

Then a dog walked up to the front of the building. I could tell she was a “she”, because you could tell that she had baby dogs. She was terribly in need of something to eat and I felt so bad for her. I knew if she didn’t eat soon, she and her baby dogs would not make it.

I and my wife sat there and looked at her. We noticed that people walked by and didn’t even pet her, like most people do when they walk by an animal in front of a store. We still did not do anything. But the homeless man, who I thought did not buy himself anything to eat, went back into the store. And what he did brought tears to me and my wife. He had gone into the store and with what money he may have had, bought a can of dog food and fed that dog.

This story plays a great part in our lives. You see, that was Mother’s Day weekend. And a lot of people forget that some animals are parents too.

It took a homeless man, to show me what I should have done. He made me a better man that day.

C. the store only provided drinks D. he didn’t have enough money for food

2Seeing what the poor man did for the dog, the author and his wife ________.

A. were puzzled B. were indifferent

C. were greatly moved D. regretted they hadn’t done anything

3If the homeless man hadn’t given the dog food to eat,she and her babies would ________.

A. not have to die B. not survive

C. have to attack people D. lose their homes

4Which of the following is the most suitable title for this passage?

A. Animals Are Parents Too. B. A Lucky Mother Dog.

C. Mother’s Day Weekend. D. A kind Homeless Man.

【題目】閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項。
I wasn't surprised when I read that actress Helen Hunt recently stated that she would never allow her young daughter to become a child star. Ms. Hunt is the daughter of a Hollywood technical director, and grew up in Hollywood. Now in her late 40s, she started acting and modeling when she was eight and has probably seen a lot over those years in show business.
She has had a successful career. She earned four Golden Globes and four Emmys. She also attained the top honor of her profession when she won the Best Actress Academy Award for her role in the 1992 movie, As Good As It Gets. Given those accolades, Ms. Hunt is successful. There is no doubt that her early experiences as a child star prepared her for what has been an outstanding adult career. Given those achievements, why would this star declare she'll never allow her daughter, now at the age of six, to follow in her footsteps?
Everyone familiar with the entertainment scene is aware of the reasons for her attitude. Recent tabloid (小報) news headlines featuring the troubles of former child stars, among them Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears and the late Gary Coleman, may answer the question. Although Ms. Hunt managed to become a successful grown-up star, she apparently believes she's an exception.
What Ms. Hunt may be suggesting is that many very young stars go through unnatural childhoods on movie and TV sets. While they're earning big incomes, they're so pampered (縱容) by directors and praised by fans; they may get false impressions that their lives will always be that way. Then, within a few years, when faced with reality, they're hurt and confused. After all the overwhelming affection, they find they can't deal with the problems. That's often when drugs and alcohol take over their lives.
Helen Hunt has some other reasons why she doesn't want her daughter to be in the entertainment business. Many child stars can never make a successful transition to meaningful adulthood. However, as with many Hollywood movies, I believe there are both good and bad scenes about how it can be played out in real life.
(1)According to the passage, Ms. Hunt ________.
A.started acting and modeling when she was a little girl
B.has been acting for about 40 years
C.is the daughter of a famous actor
D.started singing when she was eight
(2)The underlined word “accolades” in Paragraph 2 probably means “________”.
A.difficulties
B.awards
C.salaries
D.opinions
(3)The author thinks Helen Hunt's success is mainly due to ________.
A.her hard work
B.the help of a technical director
C.her experiences as a child star
D.her talent and good luck
(4)From the passage we can conclude that ________.
A.few child stars will succeed in the future
B.there is no way to save the entertainment business
C.the author has a different opinion about child stars
D.meaningful adulthood only belongs to non-child stars
