【題目】 Here's a story I collected from a total stranger.

“Well, I am Lucy. I was 11 when my family arrived at Fern lake overlook on Trail Ridge road in Rocky mountain national park.

It was so beautiful to look miles across the Rockies and thousands of feet below into the valley.

My parents were busy getting lunch out of the trunk so I climbed over the wooden fence to get closer to the cliff edge for a better view.

I started down a little hill but soon started sliding on loose rocks.

I fell on my butt (屁股), but kept going faster and faster to what seemed the edge of the world (a 2,000 foot drop). In seconds I knew I was going to die. My feet and legs went first over the edge at a high speed. Then suddenly I felt two hands push hard on my chest and stopped me dead. My heart was racing and I slowly inched my body back to where I finally could make it back up the hill.

My father was waiting there and screaming at me for doing such a dangerous act.

I tried to tell him and my mom about the hands that saved my life, but to this day they don't believe me. They thought I was just trying to get out of trouble with a made up story.”

We parted ways, but I assured her that I believed every word of her story.

That's why I always ask people to share their miracles.

Each real story makes my day.

【題目】 As people age, the body changes in all sorts of predictable ways. Brains can slow. Wounds take longer to recover. And sleep patterns (模式) shift, too. This can come as news to many, says Michael V. Vitiello, a psychologist at the University of Washington who is expert in sleep in aging.

The most noticeable—and often most annoying—changes are how sleep and wake-up times change and sleep gets lighter, often beginning in middle age. Gone are weekend sleep to 11 a.m. and the ability to sleep through a noisy garbage truck down the block. Older drivers take longer to fall asleep, and they wake up more often. They tend to stay in the deepest stages of sleep for less time than younger adults.

Studies have found that poor sleep can create a particular threat to older adults—Falls, depression and anxiety, problems with memory, and increased suicide (自殺) risk are among the effects of sleep issues in this population group that researchers have found. But scientists are still unsure why those risk connections exist.

What is clear is the connection between good sleep and psychological well-being in older adults. A 2010 study showed us that connection when it came to sleep quality, but sleep quantity didn't show the same effects.

Experts say this may be the key to understanding sleep as you age. If you're sleeping less, but don't feel negative effects out of bed, the changes you notice may just be normal age-related. If you experience a sudden change in your sleep, or poor sleep is affecting your daily life, changing your personality, or your bedmate says you stop breathing when you snore, that could be a sign of something more serious and it's worth visiting your doctor.

1What is one of the changes in sleep patterns with aging?

A.People tend to wake up later.B.People sleep more at weekends.

C.People take longer to fall asleep.D.People stay longer in deep sleep.

2What will probably happen if the elderly have poor sleep?

A.They may threaten others.B.They may become anxious.

C.They may have better memory.D.They may be unaware of their risks.

3What does the 2010 study imply?

A.Both sleep quality and quantity matter with aging.

B.Sleep quantity is the key to older people's mental health.

C.Sleeping well is good for older people's psychological health.

D.The relationship between quality and quantity is not yet clear.

4What is the main idea of the passage?

A.Bedtime pattern changes as people age.

B.Poor sleep is more dangerous for older adults.

C.Bedtime pattern changes are not a sign of trouble.

D.People's body changes in different ways with aging.

【題目】 I thought I was pretty good at teaching myself—until I read Tara Westover’s Educated. Her ability to learn on her own blows my right out of the water. I was thrilled to sit down with her recently to talk about the book.

Tara was raised in a Mormon survivalist home in rural Idaho. Her dad had very non mainstream views about the government. He believed doomsday was coming and that the family should interact with the health and education systems as little as possible. As a result, she didn’t step foot in a classroom until she was 17, and major medical crises went untreated. (Her mother suffered a brain injury in a car accident and never fully recovered).

Because Tara and her six siblings worked at their father’s junkyard from a young age, none of them received any kind of proper homeschooling. She had to teach herself algebra and self-studied for the ACT, which she did well enough on to gain admission to Brigham Young University. Eventually, she earned her doctorate in intellectual history from Cambridge University.

Educated is an amazing story and I get why it’s spent so much time on the top of the New York Times bestseller list. It reminded me in some ways of the Netflix documentary Wild. Wild Country, which I recently watched. Both explore people who remove themselves from society because they have these beliefs and knowledge that they think make them more enlightened. Their belief systems benefit from their separateness, and you’re forced to be either in or out.

But unlike Wild, Wild Country—which revels in the strangeness of its subjects. Tara is never cruel, even when she’s writing about some of her father’s most fringe beliefs. It’s clear that her whole family, including her mom and dad, is energetic and talented. Whatever their ideas are, they pursue them.

Tara’s process of self-discovery is beautifully captured in Educated. It’s the kind of book that I think everyone will enjoy, no matter what genre you usually pick up.

1What does the author think of Tara’s self-teaching?

A.unbelievableB.not badC.doubtableD.impossible

2Which of the following about Tara’s family is true?

A.There are altogether six children in the family.

B.Tara’s dad often holds mainstream beliefs about the government.

C.They are a Mormon family living in the urban area of Idaho.

D.Tara did not receive formal education until 17.

3Why does the author mention Wild, Wild Country in the text?

A.To highlight that Educated is an amazing story worth reading.

B.To analyze the content of it.

C.To show that Educated is one the top of The New York Times bestseller list.

D.To introduce a documentary to the reader.

4What genre does Educated belong to?

A.novelB.science fictionC.biographyD.news report
