One stormy night many years ago, an elderly man and his wife entered the hall of a small hotel in
Philadelphia. Trying to get out of the rain, they came the front desk hoping to get some shelter for the
night.
"Could you possibly give us a room here?" the husband asked.
The clerk, a friendly man with a winning smile, looked at the couple and explained that there were
three conventions in town. "All of our rooms are taken," the clerk said. "But I can't send a nice couple
like you out into the rain at one o'clock in the morning. Would you perhaps be willing to sleep in my
room? It's not exactly a suite, but it will be good enough to make you folks comfortable for the night."
When the couple declined, the young man pressed on. "Don't worry about me; I'll make out just fine."
the clerk told them.So the couple agreed.
As he paid his bill the next morning, the elderly man said to the clerk, "You are the kind of manager
who should be the boss of the best hotel in the United States. Maybe someday I'll build one for you."
The clerk looked at them and smiled. The three of them had a good laugh. As they drove away, the
elderly couple agreed that the helpful clerk was indeed exceptional, as finding people who are both
friendly and helpful isn't easy.
Two years passed. The clerk had almost forgotten the incident when he received a letter from the old
man. It recalled that stormy night and enclosed a roundtrip ticket to New York, asking the young man to
pay them a visit.
The old man met him in New York, and led him to the corner of Fifth Avenue and 34th street. He
then pointed to a great new building there, a pale reddish stone, with turrets and watchtowers thrusting
up to the sky. "That," said the older man, "is the hotel I have just built for you to manage." "You must be
joking, " the young man said. "I can assure you I am not," said the older man, a sly smile playing around
his mouth.
The older man's name was William Waldorf Astor, and that magnificent structure was the original
WaldorfAstoria Hotel. The young clerk who became its first manager was George C. Boldt. This young
clerk never foresaw the turn of events that would lead him to become the manager of one of the world's
most glamorous hotels.

In 2006,I spent 3 glorious weeks in South Africa. It was my first time traveling on the African continent and truly each day was filled with one adventure after another. That was the craziest and the most
dangerous experience I have ever had.
On the morning of the excursion,I met with my friends for breakfast, with little conversation.I supposed
we were nervous about the day ahead of us.The coach then drove us from Cape Town to Dyer Island in
Gansbaii.
As soon as we got to our destination,we were quickly pushed into a boat.About 2 hours into the boat
we spotted our first shark. It was one of the world's deadliest predators(食肉動(dòng)物)-a Great White shark
Our guide told us that we had to get into the water immediately.Without any formal preparation or

pictures with my underwater camera, not letting my hands and feet drift(漂)out of the cage.

public, appearing on television and at conferences. Her business suffered and her neighbors insulted (辱罵)
her, but Hue has now become the public face of Mothers and Wives, an HIV/AIDS support group established

There's a man in the habit of hitting me on the head with an umbrella. At first I couldn't stand it, now I'm
used to it. I don't know his name.
I know he's average in appearance, wears a gray suit, and has a common face. I met him five years ago
one hot morning when I was sitting on a tree-shaded bench in Palermo Park, reading the paper. Suddenly I
felt something touch my head. It was the very same man who now, as I'm writing, keeps hitting me,
mechanically (機(jī)械地) and impassively, with an umbrella.
On that occasion I turned around filled with anger. He just kept on hitting me. I asked him if he was crazy,
he didn't even seem to hear me. Then I threatened to call a policeman. Calmly, cool as a cucumber, he stuck
with his task. After a few moments of hesitation, and seeing that he was not about to change his attitude, I
stood up and hit him on the nose. The man fell down, but he immediately got back on his feet, obviously with
great effort, and without a word again began hitting me on the head with the umbrella. His nose was bleeding
and, at that moment, I felt sorry for him. I felt regret for having hit him so hard. After all, the man wasn't
exactly hitting me; he was merely tapping me lightly with his umbrella, not causing any pain at all. Of course,
those taps were extremely bothersome. As we all know, when a fly lands on your forehead, you don't feel any
pain; what you feel is annoyance. Well then, that umbrella was one huge fly that kept landing on my head time
after time.
Convinced that I was dealing with a madman, I tried to escape. But the man followed me, wordlessly
continuing to hit me. So I began to run (I should point out that not many people run as fast as I do). He took
off after me, trying to land a blow. The man was out of breath so that I thought, if I continued to force him to
run at that speed, he would drop dead right then and there.
1. When the man began to strike the author with an umbrella, the author _____.

[     ]

A. became angry
B. called the police
C. turned around and escaped
D. turned around and fought back
2. The author would most probably agree that the man was _____.

[     ]

A. deaf
B. blind
C. dead
D. mad
3. The author felt sorry for the man because _____.

[     ]

A. the man formed a bad habit of beating others
B. he hit the man so hard that his nose bled
C. the man couldn't catch up with him
D. there was a fly on the man's head
4. It can be learned from the passage that the man _____.

[     ]

A. shouted loudly while hitting the author
B. wanted to tell the author something
C. ran after the author breathlessly
D. acted as if he were a fly

To some people, happiness is something to do with simplicity, and it is the ability to extract pleasure
from the simplest things-such as a peach stone (桃核). It is obvious that it has nothing to do with success.
For Sir Henry Stewart, it was certainly successful. I remember some ten years ago when he was made King's Counsel, Amos and I went to congratulate him. We smiled happily; he merely looked as miserable
as though he'd received a punishment. He took his success as a child does his medicine. And not one of
his achievements brought even a sign of a smile to his tired eyes.
I asked him one day what it was like to achieve all one's ambitions. He looked down at his roses and
went on watering them. Then he said, "The only value in achieving one's ambitions is that you then realize
that they are not worth achieving."
Yesterday, I was passing his house and he called me, "Come and see, Jan. Look! I have done it at last! "There he was, holding a small box of earth in his hand. I observed three tiny shoots out of it.
"And there were only three!" he said, his eyes laughing to heaven.
     "Three what?" I asked.
"Peach stones," he replied."I've always wanted to make peach stones grow, even since I was a child,
when I used to take them home after a party, or as a man after a banquet. And I used to plant them, and
then forgot where I planted them. But now at last I have done it. I had only three stones, and three shoots," he counted.
Then Sir Henry ran off, calling for his wife to come and see his achievement-his achievement of
simplicity.
1. From what fact could we see Sir Henry was successful?
A. He felt happy from the simplest things.
B. He was made King's Counsel.
C. He was able to make the peach stones shoot.
D. He didn't take his success seriously.
2. The author compares Sir Henry's attitude towards his success to a child's taking medicine________.
A. to show that Sir Henry felt miserable when he was promoted
B. to prove that Sir Henry didn't want to be successful
C. to suggest that Sir Henry's future job would be hard to do
D. to tell us that Sir Henry took his success as a tiny thing in his life
3. According to Sir Henry Stewart, the value in achieving one's ambitions is________.
A. that he discovers it valueless
B. that he finds it worth his efforts
C. that he has achieved it
D. that he fails to realize it
4. The writer's opinion about Sir Henry's attitude towards success is________.
A. criticism

For years I wanted a flower garden. I'd spend hours thinking of different things I could plant that
would look nice together.
But then we had Matthew. And Marvin. And the twins,    Alisa and Alan. And then Helen. Five
children. I was too busy raising them to grow a garden.
Money was tight,  as well as time. Often when my children were little,    one of them would want
something that cost too much,    and I'd have to say,    "Do you see a money tree outside?Money
doesn't grow on trees,    you know."
Finally,   all five got through high school and college and were off on their own. I started thinking
again about having a garden.
I wasn't sure,  though. I mean,   gardens do cost money,    and after all these years I was used to
living on a pretty lean,   nofrills budget.
Then,  one spring morning,    on Mother's Day,  I was working in my kitchen. Suddenly,  I realized
that cars were tooting their horns as they drove by. I looked out of the window and there was a new
tree,   planted right in my yard. I thought it must be a weeping willow,    because I saw things blowing
around on all its branches. Then I put my glasses on-and I couldn't believe what I saw. There was a
money tree in my yard!
I went outside to look. It was true! There were dollar bills,    one hundred of them,    taped all over
that tree. Think of all the garden flowers I could buy with one hundred dollars! There was also a note
attached:"IOU eight hours of digging time. Love,    Marvin."
Marvin kept his promise,  too. He dug up a nice tenbyfifteen foot bed for me. And my other children
bought me tools,    ornaments,  a trellis(棚架),  a sunflower stepping stone and gardening books.
That was three years ago. My garden's now very pretty,  just like I wanted. When I go out and
weed or tend my flowers,    I don't seem to miss my children as much as I once did. It feels like they
are right there with me.
I live up in Michigan's Upper Peninsula,  where winters are long and cold,  and summers are too
short. But every year now,    when winter sets in,  I look out of my window and think of the flowers I'll
see next spring in my little garden. I think about what my children did for me,    and I get tears in my eyes
every time.
I'm still not sure that money grows on trees. But I know love does!

1. By saying "Do you see a money tree outside…"the mother actually means "________".
A. Observation is the best teacher
B. Seeing is believing
C. The outsider sees the most of the game
D. It is not easy to gain money

2. The best title for the passage would probably be "________".
A. My flower garden
B. Marvin helps to realize my dream
C. Love in Michigan
D. Money grows on trees

3. The underlined word "nofrills"in the fifth paragraph is similar in meaning to "________".
A. wasteful
B. tight
C. absurd
D. helpful

4. From the last three paragraphs we can infer that the mother is________.
A. divorced when she was young
