A baby camel asked his mother, "why do we have such large hoofs on our feet?" She turned to him
and began her explanation.
"The big hoofs are to keep us from sinking into the sand."
"Oh!So why do we have long eyelashes?"
"It's to protect our eyes from the sand."
     "Why the big humps?"
"That is to store fat and have enough energy to go long distances in the hot desert!"
"I see!"the baby camel stretched his neck and looked up at his mother."Then what are we doing in
this cage in the middle of a zoo?"
Like the baby camel, I had asked the same kind of questions. When my blindness set in, I first
locked myself in a cage of self-pity and bitterness. I was tired of walking out of that dark cage.
Heavens! What was I thinking? Those bars were self-imposed (自我強(qiáng)加的). Finally, eagerness to
leave it inspired me to open my ears to hear a reassuring whisper--I was created for much more.
I broke down those bars and stepped out into the desert of life. I walked difficultly through the heat
with determination. And the hooves of confidence kept me from sinking into the sand of danger.
Each time I reached another point on my journey, my eyes saw a whole new world with opportunities
to make a difference. Best of all, I was pleased that I was indeed created for much more! Bars come in
all sizes and shapes. But none can hold up the force of determination that breaks them down.
Step back and peek at what bars limit you. Take a deep breath, break them down, and come out
into the freshness of a new life!

Barbara and Barry Zucker--- Pinchoff, both doctors from New York City, took their three
daughters on a walking safari(旅行)last year in Tanzania. Barbara told about their experience in
Kinbero, "It is the most remote(遙遠(yuǎn)的)place we have ever been to," camping with a few other
Americans, two Tanzanian guides, and several Hadza(哈扎人)who had time to sit and chat
because they had just killed a giraffe.
About 400 members of the Eastern Hadza tribe(部落)live in Tanzania today, the only
hunter-gatherers who remain in Africa. The Hadza hunt game, gather edible plants and honey,
and move from place to place whenever the weather changes. Every two weeks or so, they move
to a new campsite.
At the Pinchoffs' campsite, three Hadza men stopped by to visit and ended up staying three
days. One of the guides gave the men a cigarette. They took out the tobacco, put it in a pipe, and
lit the pipe with fire they started.
It takes less than two hours for Hadza women to build a new camp. They make huts(茅屋)by
bending branches into round structures about six feet high, and then covering them with long,
golden grass. If the weather is very wet, the women may choose a dry cave to set up a camp. Some
rock caves have been used over thousands of years and are decorated(裝飾)with ancient rock
paintings. Whether they sleep in huts, caves or in the open, the Hadza cover themselves only with thin
cloths and depend on fire to keep them warm.
The Hadza refuse to be "settled" into villages or to have the life of farmers. By 1979, almost all of
them had returned to their old ways. They Hadza may be the only tribe in Africa that has never paid
taxes.

It was in 1865 that two Frenchmen were looking into the future. Edouard de Laboulaye, who studied
history, admired the United States greatly. Frederic Auguste Bartholdi was a famous artist. De Laboulaye was thinking about 1876, when the country he respected so much would celebrate its 100th birthday.
What gift would be good enough for the people of France to give? Right away, Bartholdi thought of a

Bartholdi kept thinking about a statue for several years. Then, in 1871, he visited the United States
and saw the perfect place for a huge statue. It was Bedloe's Island in New York.
The project - the Statue of Liberty - got started almost immediately, and Bartholdi went home to
France to begin work. However, the statue was not finished in time for the 100th birthday. The United

that the statue - in pieces - left France for its new home.
The statue arrived in June. However, the Americans fell behind on their part of the project. They
hadn't raised enough money for building the base of the statue. People wondered if the country really
needed or wanted such a gift. Finally, though, the money was raised and the base was completed. The

I was 9 years old when I found out my father was ill. It was 1944, but I can remember my mother's words
as if it were yesterday:" Kerrel, I don't want you to take food from your father, because he has AIDS. Be very
careful when you are around him."
AIDS wasn't something we talked about in my country when I was growing up. From then on, I knew that
this would be a family secret. My parents were not together anymore, and my dad lived alone. For a while, he
could take care of himself. But when I was 12, his condition worsened. My father's other children lived far away,
so it fell to me to look after him.
We couldn't afford all the necessary medication for him, and because Dad was unable to work, I had no
money for school supplies and often couldn't even buy food for dinner. I would sit in class feeling completely
lost, the teacher's words muffled as I tried to figure out how I was going to manage. I did not share my burden
(負(fù)擔(dān)) with anyone. I had seen how people reacted to AIDS. Kids laughed at classmates who had parents with
the disease. And even adults could be cruel. When my father was moved to the hospital, the nurses would leave
his food on the bedside table even though he was too weak to feed himself.
I had known that he was going to die, but after so many years of keeping his condition a secret. I was
completely unprepared when he reached his final days. Sad and hopeless. I called a woman at the nonprofit
National AIDS Support. That day, she kept me on the phone for hours. I was so lucky to
find someone who cared. She saved my life.
I was 15 when my father died. He took his secret away with him, having never spoken
about AIDS to anyone, even me. He didn't want to call attention to AIDS. I do.
1. What does Kerrel tell us about her father?
A. He had stayed in the hospital since he fell ill.
B. He depended on the nurses in his final days.
C. He worked hard to pay for his medication.
D. He told no one about his disease.
2. What can we learn from the underlined sentence?
A. Kerrel couldn't understand her teacher.
B. Kerrel had special difficulty in hearing.
C. Kerrel was too troubled to focus on the lesson.
D. Kerrel was too tired to hear her teacher's words.
3. Why did Kerrel keep her father's disease a secret?
A. She was afraid of being looked down upon.
B. She thought it was shameful to have AIDS.
C. She found no one willing to listen to her.
D. She wanted to obey her mother.
4. Why did Kerrel write the passage?
A. To tell people about the sufferings of her father.
B. To show how little people knew about AIDS.
C. To draw people's attention to AIDS.

Jack sits in the coffee bar that looks at Jaffa Street listening to the sad, sad music playing on an old
tape recorder. "Oum Khalsoum", says one of the other men sitting in the coffee bar to nobody in
particular. "This is Oum Khalsoum singing".
Jack takes another sip of sweet mint(薄荷) tea and nods in agreement without saying anything. His uncle
lives in Egypt, and every time he visits him, he tells him the story of how he saw the well-known singer at
one of her concerts in Cairo in 1970, not long before she died. The song seems to go on forever, and it's
very sad. He thinks it's beautiful, but he doesn't want to hear it now. It's too sad for him. It makes him
think of his uncle in Egypt who he hasn't seen for many years now, and also about the reason why his
uncle lives in Egypt while his aunt lived in Lebanon and why he, on the other hand, lives in Jordan, and
why he is in Jerusalem now.
His father died a few months ago. After that, he found that there were so many things that he had
wanted to ask his father, but had never asked . He realized that he knew very little about his own family,
and decided to try and find out more about the place where his father had grown up, and where his
grandparents (who had died when he was very young) were from.
He has now spent a couple of days wandering around Jerusalem with an old, torn photograph in his
hand. The photograph shows the whole family, his grandparents standing proudly at the centre of a
group of four children in front of a house on a busy street. Next to the house there seems to be a garden
with what look like olive (橄欖色) trees in it.
