We can almost always find an opportunity for kindness. I filled my afternoon with small acts of
kindness today and  they didn't take much time or effort, but I hope they made  a small difference to the
people who received them.
This afternoon I went out shopping. My first stop was the supermarket. I wanted to buy some bread
with chocolate for my little daughter Rita. After I got the bread, I went on to my second stop-a local
charity (慈善) bookshop. I wanted  to see if I could buy some books on unicorns for Rita.
While I was there, I started a conversation with the shop assistant, during which she commented on
the smell of my bread. I jokingly replied she could either avoid it (if she was on a diet) or go to the
supermarket and get some. She replied she would prefer the second. "Even better. I will give you mine,"
I said. I gave my bread to her and walked straight  out. She seemed a little surprised.
When I came out, it was raining hard. Everyone looked  quite soaked. They must have been running
in the rain. I noticed a homeless lady selling the Big Issue (a magazine  that supports homeless people)
and she looked especially cold, so I gave her all my money to buy her magazines.
I then went back to my car. I had to pay for two hours of parking instead of one because I didn't
have the correct change, so I still had an hour left on my parking. I waited until I saw a young couple
drive in. I gave them one magazine and they were a little surprised and quite pleased.
You see, doing acts of kindness is that easy.

For years Tom Anderson's life was withered(枯萎) up by the memory of his part in an outdoor
adventure that resulted in the death of one of his classmates. He and his wife separated after six years
of marriage. Then the news about Tom changed. His wife Betty came back;he earned a fine position
in a company.
One day he told me what had changed his life:I used to think, 'Nothing can undo what I have done'.
The thought of my guilt would stop me in the middle of a smile or a handshake. It put a wall between my
wife and me.Then I had an unexpected visit from the person I feared most to see-the mother of the
college classmate who died."Years ago", she said, "I found it in my heart, through prayer, to________.
Betty forgave you.So did your friends and employers." She paused, and then said strictly, "You are the
one person who hasn't forgiven Tom Anderson.Who do you think you are to stand out against the people of this town and the Lord Almighty?""I looked into her eyes and found there a kind of permission to be
the person I might have been if her boy had lived. For the first time in my adult life I felt worthy to love
and be loved."

閱讀理解
When I met him, I had a lot of anger inside of me. I've lived my whole life in Spanish Harlem, but in
my neighborhood, there are shootups all the time. I know kids who have been shot or beaten up. I have
friends who ended up in prison. I could have ended up that way, too, but Mr. Clark wouldn't let that
happen.
Mr. Clark worked long hours, making sure I did my work. My grades rose. In fact, the scores of
our whole class rose. One day, he took our class to see The Phantom of the Opera, and it was the
first time some kids had ever been out of Harlem. Before the show, he treated us to dinner at a restaurant
and taught us not to talk with our mouths full. We did not want to let him down.
Mr. Clark was selected as Disney's 2000 Teacher of the Year. He said he would draw three names
out of a hat; those students would go with him to Los Angeles to get the award. But when the time came
to draw names, Mr  Clark said, "You're all going. "
On graduation day, there were a lot of tears. We didn't want his class to end. In 2001, he moved to
Atlanta, but we  always kept in touch. He started giving lectures about education, and wrote a bestselling
book based on his classroom rules, The Essential 55.
In 2003, Mr Clark took some of us on a trip to South Africa to deliver school supplies and visit the
orphanages (孤兒院). It was the most amazing experience of my life. It's now my dream to one day start
a group of women's clubs, helping people from all backgrounds.
