An idea that started in Seattle’s public library has spread throughout America and beyond. The concept is simple:help to build a sense of community in a city by getting everyone to read the same book at the
same time.
In addition to encouraging reading as a pursuit(追求) to be enjoyed by all,the program allows strangers to communicate by discussing the book on the bus,as well as promoting reading as an experience to be
shared in families and schools. The idea came from Seattle librarian Nancy Pearl who launched the “If All
of Seattle Read the Same Book” project in 1998.Her original program used author visits, study guides and book discussion groups to bring people together with a book, but the idea has since expanded to many
other American cities, and even to Hong Kong.
In Chicago, the mayor appeared on television to announce the choice of To Kill a Mockingbird as the
first book in the “One Book,One Chicago”program. As a result, reading clubs and neighborhood groups
sprang up around the city.Across the US,stories emerged of parents and children reading to each other at night and strangers chatting away on the bus about plot and character.
The only problem came up in New York, where local readers could not decide on one book to
represent the huge and diverse population. This may show that the idea works best in medium-sized cities
or large towns, where a greater sense of unity can be achieved.Or it may show that New Yorkers missed
the point, putting all their energy and passion into the choice of the book rather than discussion about a
book itself.
Ultimately,as Nancy points out,the level of success is not measured by how many people read a book ,but by how many people are enriched by the process,or have enjoyed speaking to someone with whom
they would not otherwise have shared a word.

1.What is the purpose of the project launched by Nancy?

A.To invite authors to guide readers.
B.To encourage people to read and share.
C.To involve people in community service.
D.To promote the friendship between cities.

2.Why was it difficult for New Yorkers to carry out the project?

A.They were too busy to read a book.
B.They came from many different backgrounds.
C.They had little interest in reading.
D.They lacked support from the local government.

3.According to the passage, where would the project be more easily carried out?

A.In large communities with little sense of unity.
B.In large cities where libraries are far from home.
C.In large towns where agreement can be quickly reached.
D.In medium-sized cities with a diverse population.

4.The underlined words “shared a word”in Paragraph 5 probably mean______.

A.discussed the meaning of a word
B.A.exchanged ideas with each other
C.gained life experience
D.used the same language

5.According to Nancy, the degree of success of the project is judged by____.

A.the number of people who benefit from reading
B.the careful selection of a proper book
C.the growing popularity of the writers
D.the number of books that each person reads

Maybe ten-year-old Elizabeth put it best when she said to her father,“But,Dad,you can’t be healthy if you’re dead?”
Dad,in a hurry to get home before dark so he could go for a run,had forgotten to wear his safety belt--a mistake 75% of the US population make every day.The big question is why.
There have been many myths about safety belts ever since their first appearance in cars some forty years ago.The following are three of the most common.
Myth Number One:It’s best to be“thrown clear”of a serious accident.
Truth:Sorry, but any accident serious enough to “throw you clear”is also going to be serious enough to give you a very bad landing. And chances are you’ll have traveled through a windshield(擋風(fēng)玻璃)or door to do it.Studies show that chances of dying after a car accident are twenty-five times greater in cases where people are“thrown clear.”
Myth Number Two:Safety belts“trap”people in cars that are burning or sinking in water.
Truth:Sorry again, but studies show that people knocked unconscious(昏迷)due to not wearing safety belts have a greater chance of dying in these accidents,People wearing safety belts are usually protected to the point of having a clear head to free themselves from such dangerous situations, not to be trapped in them.
Myth Number Three:Safety belts aren’t needed at speeds of less than 30 miles per hour(mph).

As the pace of life continues to increase, we are fast losing the art of relaxation. Once you are in the
habit of rushing through lift, being on the go from morning till night, it is hard to slow down. But relaxation
is essential for a healthy mind and body.
Stress is a natural part of everyday life and there is no way to avoid it. In fact, it is not the bad thing it
is often supposed to be. A certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation and give purpose to life.
It is only when the stress gets out of control that it can lead to poor performance and ill healthy.
The amount of stress a person can withstand depends very much on the individual. Some people are
not afraid of stress, and such characters are obviously prime material for managerial responsibilities.
Others lose heart at the first signs of unusual difficulties. When exposed to stress, in whatever form, we
react both chemically and physically. In fact we make choice between "fight" or "flight" and in more
primitive days the choice made the difference between life or death. The crises we meet today are
unlikely to be so extreme, but however little the stress is, it involves the same response. It is when such
a reaction lasts long, through continued exposure to stress, that health becomes endangered. Such
serious conditions as high blood pressure and heart disease have established links with stress. Since we
cannot remove stress from our lives (it would be unwise to do so even if we could), we need to find
ways to deal with it.
1. People are finding less and less time for relaxing themselves because_____.
A. they do not know how to enjoy themselves
B. they do not believe that relaxation is important for health
C. they are travelling fast all the time
D. they are becoming busier with their work
2. According to the writer, the most important character for a good manager is his ________.
A. not fearing stress
B. knowing the art of relaxation
C. high sense of responsibility
D. having control over performance
3. Which of the following statements is true?
A. We can find some ways to avoid stress.
B. Stress is always harmful to people.
C. It is easy to change the habit of keeping oneself busy with work.
D. Different people can withstand different amounts of stress.
4. In Paragraph 3, "such a reaction" refers back to_______.
A. "making a choice between 'flight' or 'fight'"
B. "reaction to stress both chemically and physically"
C. "responding to crises quickly"
D. "losing heart at the signs difficulties"
5. In the last sentence of the passage, "do so " refers to ______.
A. "expose ourselves to stress"
B. "find ways to deal with stress"
C. "remove stress from our lives"
D. "established links between diseases and stress"

                                                                    Life in 2060
Let us suppose it is now about A.D. 2060. Let's make believe it is about fifty years from now. Of
course, things have changed and life is very different.
Voyages to the moon are being made every day. It is as easy to take a holiday on the moon today as
it was for the people in 1960 to take a holiday in Europe. At a number of scenic spots on the moon, many hotels have been built. The hotels are air conditioned, naturally. In order that everyone can enjoy the
beautiful scenery on the moon, every room has at least one picture window. Everything imaginable is
provided for entertainment of young and old.
What are people eating now? People are still eating food. They haven't yet started to take on heir
(繼承) supply of energy directly as electrical current or as nuclear power. They may some day. But many
foods now come in pill form, and the food that goes into the pill continues to come mainly from green
plants.
Since there are several times as many people in the world today as there were a hundred years ago,
most of our planet's surface has to be filled. The deserts are irrigated with water and crops are no longer
destroyed by pests. The harvest is always good.
Farming, of course, is very highly developed. Very few people have to work on the farm. It is possible
to run the farm by just pushing a few buttons now and then.
People are now largely vegetarians (素食者). You see, as the number of people increases, the
number of animals decreases. Therefore, people have to be vegetarians and we are healthier both in our
bodies and in our minds, and we know the causes and cure of disease and pain, and it is possible to get
rid of diseases. No one has to be ill any more.
Such would be our life in 2060.

There are various reasons why cancers appear to be on the increase. For one thing, though their
sufferers are to be found in all age groups, cancers are particularly likely to attack persons in their
middle and advanced years. Naturally, since people live longer these years, there are more cancer
sufferers than before. Again, with better methods of diagnosis (診斷), doctors can more easily
recognize cancerous growths that would formerly have passed unnoticed or that would have been
wrongly diagnosed. It is also believed that certain habits and conditions of modern living, including
heavy smoking and the pollution of the air, may leave people living in more cancer-causing conditions
than before.
We all look forward to the day when a simple medical test can find cancer while it is still small.
Researchers around the world are working on such a test. Most of their work deals with the
examination of the blood.
Researchers in Boston have found something in the blood of cancer patients that does not
appear in healthy persons. The test showed which persons had cancer and which did not. It was
correct more than 90 percent of the time. The researchers believe the test may be able to show
cancer very clearly in its development. Cancers discovered early usually can be treated successfully.
The test examines very small bits of fat in the blood called lipids (脂質(zhì)). Cancers seem to change
lipids although doctors do not know why. The test showed differences between the lipids of the
persons with cancer and the lipids of those without cancer. The researchers say the new test could
be a step to develop a simple way to check patients for cancer before the disease shows on an X-ray.

1. Who will have cancer from the study of the researchers?

A. The young.
B. The middle age and the older.
C. The man.
D. The woman.

2. The underlined words "such a test" refer to________.

A. the test that shows which persons have cancer and which don’t .
B. the test that may be able to show cancer very early in its
    development。
C. a simple medical test that cannot find cancer when it is small
D. a new test that could be a step to develop a difficult way

3. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

A. Cancers have much to do with something in patients’ blood.
B. People living in better conditions are most likely to be attacked by
    cancer.
C.X-raying is the best way to determined whether a person has cancer
   or not.
D. Cancers have nothing to do with a person’s habits and living
    conditions.

4. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. A simple way to cancer
B. Cancers can be cured
C. How to find cancer
D. Early discovery of cancer

Prolonging human life has increased the size of the human population. Many people alive today
would have died of childhood diseases if they had been born 100 years ago. Because more people live l
onger, there are more people around at any given time. In fact, it is a decrease in death rates, not an
increase in birthrates, that has led to the population explosion.?
Prolonging human life has also increased the dependency load. In all societies, people who are
disabled or too young or too old to work are dependent on the rest of society to provide for them.
In hunting and gathering cultures, old people who could not keep up might be left behind to die. In times
of famine(饑荒), infants might be allowed to die because they could not survive if their parents starved,
but if the parents survived they could have another child. In most contemporary(當(dāng)代的) societies,
people feel a moral responsibility to keep people alive whether they can work or not. We have a great
many people today who live past the age at which they want to work or are able to work; we also have
rules which require people to retire at a certain age. Unless these people were able to save money for
their retirement, somebody else must support them. In America many retired people live on social
security checks which are so little that they must live in near poverty. Older people have more illness
than young or middle-aged people; unless they have wealth or private or government insurance, they
must often “go on welfare” if they have a serious illness.?
When older people become senile (衰老的) or too weak and ill to care for themselves, they create
grave problems for their families. In the past and in some traditional cultures, they would be cared for
at home until they died. Today, with most members of a household working or in school, there is often
no one at home who can care for a sick or weak person. To meet this need, a great many nursing
homes and convalescent (療養(yǎng)的) hospitals have been built. These are often profit-making
organizations, although some are sponsored(主辦) by religious and other nonprofit groups. While a
few of these institutions are good, most of them are simply “dumping (倒垃圾的) grounds” for the
dying in which “care” is given by poorly paid, overworked, and under-skilled personnel.?

1.The author believes that the population explosion results from

A.a(chǎn)n increase in birthrates
B.the industrial development?
C.a(chǎn) decrease in death rates
D.human beings' cultural advances

2.According to the passage, which of the following statements about the old people in America is
      TRUE?

A.Many of them live on social security money which is hardly enough.?
B.Minority of them remain in a state of near poverty after their
      retirement.
C.When they reach a certain age, compulsory retirement is necessary and
       beneficial.
D. With the growing inflation(通貨膨脹), they must suffer more from unbearable burdens than ever?

3.The underlined phrase “this need” in Paragraph 3 refers to        ?

A.prolonging the dying old people's lives?
B.reducing the problems caused by the retired people?
C.making profits through caring for the sick or weak people?
D.taking care of the sick or weak people?

4.Which best describes the author's attitude toward most of the nursing homes, and convalescent

In white shirt, blue pants, black cloth shoes and two pigtails (辮子), Jingqiu gives off an air of great
"pure beauty" in Zhang Yimou's new movie Under the Hawthom Tree.《山揸樹之戀》
The film tells the story of the sad romance of Jingqiu and a handsome young man named Laosan. Set at
the end of the "cultural revolution" (1966-1976), the pair manage to fall in love although they come form
different political environments.
Before it was released, moviegoers speculated (推測(cè)) on just what this "pure beauty" could be.
Director Zhang complained of how long it had taken him to find the right girl for the part of Jingqiu-a
character so innocent that she believes simply lying on the same bed with a man will make her pregnant.
It was 18-year-old Zhou Dongyu who stood out from the crowd. According to Zhang, Zhou has "eyes

What to do if you don't feel popular?
    ● Try to take part in activities. Call your friends. Plan to do something. The worst feeling is staying home alone, because it makes you feel even more lonely.
    ● Try to make new friends. Choose friends carefully, not just because you think they're popular. And remember, making good friends takes time. Choosing a popular person to be friends with is okay, if they are nice.
    ● Be yourself (保持獨(dú)立). If you want to become friends with someone who's popular, don't make yourself into someone you are not just to impress that person.
    ● Be nice. Be friendly. Be outgoing (開朗的). But don't overdo it! Talk to trusted friends if you are feeling really bad. Or you might want to write it down ill a journal (期刊) or diary.
    ●  Do something special for yourself. You could take pictures of your friends, or collect their school pictures, and take a collage (拼貼畫) to hang on your wall. This will remind (提醒) you, when you are feeling unpopular, that you really do have friends.
    ● Think up your own ideas. These suggestions might not work for everyone.
What to do if you have a problem with your teacher?
    ● Talk to your parents, or another adult who will listen to you and perhaps can help. Talk to your friends. Maybe they have had problems with the same teacher, too.
● Don't give the teacher a reason to have problems with you. Do your work, complete your task, attend the class seriously and take notes. Maybe you just need to give the teacher a chance (機(jī)會(huì)).
    ● Try to find out what the problem is.
    ● Talk to the teacher if you feel comfortable doing this. Don't be nasty (鬧別扭的), but express your concerns (關(guān)心). Listen to the teacher, as well.
    ● Just accept the fact that you're not going to love all your teachers.
