Dogs are social animals and without proper training, they will behave like wild animals. They will spoil
your house, destroy your belongings, bark excessively (過(guò)分地), fight other dogs and even bite you.
Nearly all behavior problems are perfectly normal dog activities that occur at the wrong time or place or
are directed at the wrong thing. The key to preventing or treating behavior problems is learning to teach
the dog to redirect its normal behavior to outlets that are acceptable in the domestic setting.
One of the best things you can do for your dog and yourself is to obedience train (馴服) it.
Obedience training doesn't solve all behavior problems, but it is the foundation for solving just about any
problem. Training opens up a line of communication between you and your dog. Effective communication
is necessary to instruct your dog about what you want it to do.
Training is also an easy way to establish the social rank order. When your dog obeys a simple request
of "come here, and sit", it is showing obedience and respect for you. It is not necessary to establish
yourself as top dog or leader of the dog pack (群)by using extreme measures. You can teach your dog
its subordinate (從屬的) role by teaching it to show submission (服從)to you. Most dogs love performing tricks for you to pleasantly accepts that you are in charge.
Training should be fun and rewarding for you and your dog. It can enrich your relationship and make
living together more enjoyable. A well-trained dog is more confident and can more safely be allowed a
greater amount of freedom than an untrained animal.

In Kansas City, Missouri, a computer helps firefighters. The computer keeps information about every one
of the 350 000 street addresses in the city. When firefighters answer a call, the computer will give them
important information about the burning building: its position, size and so on. In fact, the computer system has
a lot of ways of helping firefighters with the problems facing them. For example, it can give medical information about invalids (傷殘者) living in a burning building. With this information, the firefighters can take special care
to find these sick persons and save them. The Kansas City computer system also keeps a medical record of
each of the city's 900 firefighters. This kind of information is especially useful when a fireman is injured. With
this medical information, doctors can treat the injured firefighters more quickly and easily.

It is often said that politeness costs nothing. In fact, it seems that a little more courtesy could save
businesses £5billion every year.
Frequently hearing the phrase "thank you" or "well done" means the same to staff as a modest pay rise,
researchers say. Praise and encouragement also makes employees more likely to work hard and stay in
their jobs, saving on the cost of finding replacements.
A third of 1,000 workers surveyed by consulting firm White Water Strategies said they did not get
thanked at all when they did well, and a further third said they were not thanked enough. In both cases,
staff said they felt undervalued, meaning they were less likely to exert themselves and were more likely
to look for employment elsewhere. The net result is around £5.2billion in lost productivity from employees
who would raise their game if they felt more appreciated, White Water claimed. According to the company,
praising staff has the same motivational kick as a 1 per cent pay rise-and works out much cheaper for bosses.
Three out of four employees said that regular acknowledgement by their bosses was important to them, but
only a quarter said they were actually given as much praise as they felt they needed. The survey found that
those in blue-collar and manual jobs were less likely to be given any recognition for doing well.
In regional terms, Scottish staff felt most undervalued. Four out of ten workers said they were never
thanked and eight out of ten said they would like more praise. However, workers in the North-East are less
impressed by being buttered up by the boss,
as only 69 per cent said they felt the need to be told "well done"
regularly.
Older employees and women need the most reassurance, according to psychologist Averil Leimon, a
director of White Water Strategies. She said that words of praise did more than create a pleasant place to
work-they could even boost profits.
1. What can we infer from the text?
A. Three out of four employees said they were given as much praise as they felt they needed.
B. British staff felt most undervalued than staff of other counties.
C. White-collar were more likely to be praised than manual jobs.
D. Praise and encouragement can make employees more likely to work hard than stay in their jobs.
2. From the 4th paragraph, we know workers in the North-East of England are _____ than Scottish staff.
A. more eager for boss' praise
B. less likely to be moved by boss' praise
C. less eager for boss' praise
D. more likely to be moved by boss' praise
3. According to psychologist Averil Leimon, what kind of person need the most praise?
A. Older male employees.
B. Older female employees.
C. Young female employees.
D. Young female employees.
4. What does "Politeness costs nothing." mean?
A. Politeness can make you lose a lot.
B. You have to cost no money to become polite.
C. If you are polite, you don't have to cost anything to get everything.
D. Politeness benefits you a lot.

A new retail (零售) phenomenon-SampleTrend from Japan which allows customers to walk away
with free products is to launch in Britain. From tomorrow, visitors to SampleTrend's central London
store can try anything on its shelves, and all of the products can be taken home without charge. For a
nominal (象征性的) annual membership fee of £60, users are free to enter the shop once a month
and help themselves to no less than £250 worth of goods every year. The only requirement is that
shoppers are asked to complete a simple questionnaire about each product they try.
Known as "try-vertising" (體驗(yàn)式廣告), the concept allows manufacturers to test products and
receive consumer feedback (反饋.) before launching onto the open market. It is already popular in
Japan and now aims to promote the broken UK retail industry.
According to new figures, stores are facing a Christmas crisis with the weakest trading for six
months. Michael Ghosh, the founder behind SampleTrend, said. "The concept behind SampleTrend
is unique in the UK. It allows shoppers the opportunity to walk away with a number of real, full-size
products of their choosing without handing over a penny."
The concept of try-vertising is simple but effective. Businesses across all sectors, from cosmetic (化
妝品) manufacturers to drink makers, place new products on the shelves at SampleTrend and wait for
consumers to try them out. Customers complete a short 10-point questionnaire about the product, and
the feedback they provide is used to make any last-minute adjustment before the product is brought
officially to market. The SampleTrend store houses everything including cosmetics, food and drink, and
household goods.
Ghosh, the former advertising and sales director for Disney Europe, said such feedback may also
build brand loyalty from the beginning-a particularly appealing prospect for new businesses.
1. What do we know from the passage about SampleTrend?
A. It appears in Britain first.
B. It is unacceptable in Japan.
C. Its products are totally free for people.

Teamwork is just as important in science as it is on the playing field or in the gym.Scientific investigations (調(diào)查) are almost always carried out by teams of people working together.Whatever the task your group is assigned, a few rules need to be followed to ensure a productive and successful experience.
What comes first is to keep an open mind, because everyone's ideas deserve consideration and each
group member can make his or her own contribution.Secondly, it makes a job easier to divide the group
task among all group members.Thirdly, always work together, take turns, and encourage each other by
listening, clarifying, and trusting one another.
Activities like investigations are most effective when done by small groups. Here are some more
suggestions for effective team performance during these activities:make sure each group member
understands and agrees to the task given to him or her, and everyone knows exactly when, why and what to do;be responsible for your own learning, though it is by no means unwise to compare your observations
with those of other group members.
When there is research to be done, divide the topic into several areas, and this can explore the issue in a very detailed way.You are encouraged to keep records of the sources used by each person, which helps
you bring back the origin of the problems that may happen unexpectedly.A file for exchanging
information  (eg, photocopies of notes, oral discussion, etc.) is also important, for a wellchosen method not only strengthens what you present but also makes yourself easily understood. Most important of all, it is
always wise to make decisions by compromise and agreement.

I found the imagination of becoming a grandmother somewhat discouraging. I was younger than I
thought a grandmother should be when I got the news that I was going to become one myself. I admit, it
was not a role that I was emotionally ready to accept. I had been a young mother, and had certainly hoped my daughter would not face that same challenge. I remarried when she was a teenager, and then had two more children. On getting the news that she was expecting, I remember thinking "What do I know about
being a grandmother? -I haven't even finished raising my own kids yet!" I don't like to be unprepared, so I read a few books about grandparenting. That gave me a little help, but I was still uncertain. I thought about other grandmothers I knew, and got a few ideas I liked and a few more that I didn't. But I couldn't quite
figure out what kind of grandmother I wanted to be. Then I thought about my own grandmother, Granny,
as she's known by most people, and I knew I had the answer.
I didn't realize it until that moment, but my own grandmother was the example for the kind of
grandmother I wanted to be. I am fortunate that I got to spend a lot of time with my grandparents when I was a little kid. Here's what I learned from my Granny:
Grandmothers always have a cookie jar. For my entire life, Granny always had a cookie jar full of
cookies. When I was a little tiny girl, just at eye level with the counter, Granny would get the cookie jar
down for me. When I was a little older I learned how to pull the chair over so I could reach. As I got taller, if I really stretched, I could reach the cookie jar with my finger tips and move it close enough to get it down off the counter to find out what kind of treat was inside. Always the first thing I did when I went to
Granny 's house was check the cookie jar and there were always cookies in it. Many years later, I'll drive my own children to Granny's house and the first thing Pd do is get us all a cookie.
So grandmothers must have a cookie jar and on my granddaughte' s first Christmas, my daughter
bought me my own cookie jar. She said when they came to see me, her daughter would find the treat the way she did and I did.
