If women are mercilessly exploited (剝削) year after year, they have only themselves to blame,
because they tremble at the thought of being seen in public in clothes that are out of fashion. They are
always taken advantage of by the designers and the big stores. Clothes which have been worn only a
few times have to be put aside because of the change of fashion. When you come to think of it, only
a woman is capable of standing in front of a wardrobe packed full of clothes and announcing sadly that
she has nothing to wear.
Changing fashions are nothing more than the intentional creation of waste. Many women spend vast
sums of money each year to replace clothes that have hardly been worn. Women who cannot afford to
throw away clothing in this way, waste hours of their time changing the dresses they have. Skirts are
lengthened or shortened; necklines are lowered or raised, and so on.
No one can claim that the fashion industry contributes anything really important to society. Fashion
designers are rarely concerned with primary things like warmth, comfort and durability (耐用). They're
only interested in outward appearance and they take advantage of the fact that women will put up with
any amount of discomfort, as long as they look right. There can hardly be a man who hasn't sometime
in his life smiled at the sight of a woman shaking in a thin dress on a winter day, or picking her way
through deep snow in high-heeled shoes.
When comparing men and women in the matter of fashion, the conclusions to be drawn are obvious.
Do the constantly changing fashions of women's clothes, one wonders, reflect basic qualities of instability (不穩(wěn)定) ? Men are too clever to let themselves be cheated by fashion designers. Do their unchanged
styles of dress reflect basic qualities of stability and reliability? That is for you to decide.
1. Designers and big stores always make money     _  .
A. by mercilessly exploiting women workers in the clothing industry
B. because they are capable of predicting new fashions
C. by constantly changing the fashions in women's clothing
D. because they always improve quality of women's clothing
2. The writer would be less critical (批評) if fashion designers placed more stress on the    __of clothing.
A. cost
B. appearance
C. comfort
D. suitability
3. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. New fashions in clothing are created for the commercial exploitation of women.
B. The constant changes in women's clothing reflect their strength of character.
C. The fashion industry makes an important contribution to society.
D. Fashion designs should not be encouraged since they are only welcomed by women.
4. By saying "the conclusions to be drawn are obvious", the writer means that ________.
A. women's changeableness in their choice of clothing is often laughed at
B. women are better able to put up with discomfort
C. men are also exploited greatly by fashion designers
D. men are more reasonable in the matter of fashion

Since the pre-historic times, man has had an urge to satisfy his needs. Be it hunger, shelter or search for a mate, he has always controlled the situations to his advantage. Probably this might be the reason why we humans are the most developed of all living species on the earth. As we climbed the steps of development, we somehow left behind common sense and logical thinking -- we forgot that we have stopped thinking
ahead of time.
If you are hungry, what do you do? Get a piece of your favorite meal and stay quiet. Just like your
stomach, even your mind is hungry. But it never lets you know, because you keep it busy thinking about
your dream lover, favorite star and many such things. So it silently began to care about your needs and
never let itself grow. When mind looses its freedom to grow, creativity gets a full stop. This might be the
reason why we all sometimes think "What happens next?", "Why can't I think?" "Why am I always given
the difficult problems?" Well, this is the result of using our brain for thinking of not-so-worthy things.
Hunger of the mind can be actually satisfied through reading. Now why reading and not watching TV? Because reading has been the most educative tool used by us right from the childhood. Just like that to
develop other aspects of our life, we have to turn to reading. You have innumerable number of books in
this world which will answer all your "How to?" questions. The interesting part of the book is stored in your mind as a seed. Now this seed is unknowingly used by you in your future to develop new ideas. The same seed, if used many times, can help you link and relate a lot of things, of which you would have never
thought in your wildest dreams! This is nothing but creativity. More the number of books you read, your
mind will open up like never before.
1. What is the function of the first paragraph?
A. To show humans are the most developed.
B. To introduce the topic of the passage.
C. To indicate people have different needs to satisfy.
D. To explain why people need to read.
2. What does the author mean by saying "When mind looses its freedom to grow, creativity gets a full
stop."
A. When mind keeps growing, creativity fully stops.
B. When freedom is lost, creativity gets a full stop.
C. When mind stops growing, creativity fully stops.
D. When growing is lost, creativity gets a flail stop.
3. The paragraph following the passage is probably about ______.
A. how the pre-historic man feeds his mind
B. what other advantages reading brings
C. how to develop creativity
D. how to satisfy your mind by watching TV
4. The author tends to tell us ______.
A. reading can satisfy your all needs
B. reading can result from creativity
C. reading can feed your mind
D. reading can realize your dreams

Labor force is defined as being the total number of people who are available to work and earn
income. This definition includes everyone who is employed or seeking paid employment, so it includes
employers and the self-employed. Labor is one of the country's resources which can be combined with
other resources to produce the goods and services wanted by the community.
Although the size of the workforce depends a great deal on the size of the total population, there are
several other influences which also affect it. The age distribution (分布) of the total population has a very
marked effect on the available workforce. If the population has a high proportion of very young people
or of those too old to work, then the available workforce would be lower than if there were a balanced
spread age distribution. If the population naturally grows rapidly, the number of births greatly exceeds
(超出) the number of deaths then as a total population increases proportion of the workforce declines.
Sometimes a population is described as aging which means that the birth rate is either falling or
growing very slowly, and as people retire from the workforce there are insufficient numbers of young
people entering it to replace those who are leaving it. In that situation the population is top-heavy with
older people. So the percentage of the population in the workforce declines when there is either a rapid
increase in births or a falling birth rate.
The age distribution of the population has several important effects on the economy. If the population
is aging and there is an increase in the number of people retiring without a corresponding increase in the
number entering the workforce, this raises the problem of the ability of the economy to provide a
reasonable level of social services to the retired group. If the aged are to be cared for in special homes,
finance must be available for that purpose. If the size of the workforce is small relative to the total
population, then the government tax revenue (稅收) is relatively low and either the government has less
money available to it or the workforce members have to be taxed more heavily.
1. In the passage "labor force" is defined as ___________.
A. people who are available to work and earn income
B. self-employed people only
C. people who are looking for an employment
D. employers who create job opportunities
2. The conclusion which can be drawn from the second paragraph is that___________.
A. a natural growth of population leads to a balanced workforce
B. a large population does not necessarily mean a higher proportion of workforce
C. the larger the population, the higher the proportion of the workforce
D. the workforce will be lower, if the population has a balanced age distribution
3. When a population is said to be aging, ___________.
A. there are more people retiring than those entering the workforce
B. the birth rate must be growing
C. there should be an oversupply of workforce
D. There are more people entering the workforce than those retiring

"You are going to the United States to live? How wonderful! You are really lucky."
Perhaps your family and friends said similar things to you when you left home. But does it true
all the time? Is your life in the new country always wonderful and exciting?
Specialists say that it isn't easy to get used to life in a new culture. "Culture shock" is the term
specialists use when talking about the feelings that people have in a new environment. "There are
three stages of culture shock, "say the specialists. In the first stage, the newcomers like their new
environment. Then, when the fresh experience dies, they begin to hate the city, the country, the
people, and everything else. In the last stage, the newcomers begin to adjust to their surroundings
and, as a result enjoy their life more.
There are some obvious factors m culture shock. The weather may be unpleasant. The customs
may be different. The public service systems the telephone, post office, or transporta- tion maybe
difficult to work out. The simplest things seem to be big problems. The language may be difficult.
Who feels culture shock? Everyone does in this way or that. But culture shock surprises most
people. Very often the people having the worst culture shock are those who never had any difficulties
in their home countries and were successful in their community. Coming to a new country, these
people find they do not have the same established positions. They find themselves without a role,
almost without an identity.
They have to build a new self-image.
Culture shock gives rise to a feeling of disorientation (迷惘). This feeling may be homesickness.
When homesick, people feel like staying inside all the time. They want to protect themselves from
the strange environment, and create and escape inside their room for a sense of security. This escape
does solve the problem of culture shock for the short term, but it does nothing to make the person
familiar with the culture. Getting to know the new environment and gaining experience are the long
term solutions to the problem of culture shock.

1. When people move to a new country, they ______.
A. will get used to their new surroundings with difficulty

A. the fewer difficulties you may have abroad
B. the more difficulties you may have abroad

Do you know of anyone who uses the truth to deceive (欺騙) ? When someone tells you something
that is true, but leaves out important information that should be included, he can give you a false picture.
For example , some might say, "I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery (彩票) . It was great. I
took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred dollars! "
This guy's a winner , right?  Maybe , maybe not. We then discover that he bought  $200 worth of
tickets, and only one was a winner. He's really a big loser!
He didn't say anything that was false, but he left out important information on purpose. That's called
a half-truth. Half-truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest.
Some politicians often use this trick. Let's say that during Governor Smith's last term, her state lost
one million jobs and gained three million jobs. Then she seeks another term. One of her opponents (對
手) says, " During Govemor Smith's term, the state lost one million jobs ! " That's true. However, an
honest statement would  have been , " During Govemor Smith's term , the state had a net gain of two
million jobs. "
Advertisers(廣告商) will sometimes use half-truths. It's against the law to make false statements so
they try to mislead you with the truth. An advertisement might say, " Nine out of ten doctors advised their
patients to take Yucky Pills to cure toothache. " It fails to mention that they only asked ten doctors and
nine of them work for the Yucky Company.
This kind of deception happens too often. lt's a sad fact of life :Lies are lies , and sometimes the truth
can lie as well.
1. How much did the lottery winner lose?
A. One hundred dollars.
B. Two hundred dollars.
C. Three hundred dollars.
D. Four hundred dollars.
2. We may infer that the author believes people should___________.
A. buy lottery tickets
