                                                        Steps to Retire a Millionaire
Having a million-dollar portfolio is a retirement dream for many people. Making that dream come true
requires some serious effort. While success is never a sure thing, the steps outlined below will go a long
way toward helping you achieve your objective.
1. ____
Vacations, car, kids and all of life's other expenses take a big chunk out of your paycheck. To
maximize your savings, you need to minimize your expenses. Buying a home you can afford and living a
lifestyle that is below your means and not funded by credit cards are all necessities if you want to boost
your savings.
2. ____
If you don't save, you'll never reach your goal. As obvious as this might seems, far too many people
never even start to save. If your employer offers a 401(k) plan, enrolling in the plan is a great way to put
your savings on autopilot. Simply sign up for the plan and contributions will be automatically taken out of
your paycheck, increasing your savings and decreasing your immediate tax liability.
If your employer offers to match your contributions up to a certain percentage, be sure to contribute
enough to get the full match. It's like getting a guaranteed return on your investment. Finding the cash to
stash may be a challenge, particularly when you're young, but don't let that stop you from pursuing future
riches.
3. ____
Studies have shown that the majority of the returns generated by an investment are dictated by the
asset-allocation decision. If you are looking to grow your wealth over time, fixed-income investments
aren't likely to get the job done, and inflation can take a big chunk out of your savings.
Investing in equities entails more risk, but is also statistically likely to lead to greater returns. For many
of us, it's a risk we have to take if want to see our wealth grow. Asset-allocation strategies can help you
learn how to make picking the right mix of securities the core of your investing strategy.
4. ____
Part of long-term planning involves accepting the idea that setbacks will occur. If you are not
prepared, these setbacks can put a stop to your savings efforts. While you can't avoid all of the bumps in
the road, you can prepare in advance to mitigate the damage they can do.
5. ____
Your income should rise as time passes. You'll get raises, you'll change jobs, and maybe you'll get
married and become a two-income family. Every time more cash comes in to your pocket, you should
increase the amount that you save. The key to reaching your goal as quickly as possible is to save as
much as you can.

I fell in love with England because it was quaint(古雅)-all those little houses, looking terribly
old-fashioned but nice, like dolls' houses. I loved the countryside and the pubs, and I loved London.
I’ve slightly changed my mind after seventeen years because I think it's an ugly town now.
Things have changed. For everybody, England meant gentlemen, fair play, and good manners.
The fair play is going, unfortunately, and so are the gentlemanly attitudes and good manners-people
shut doors heavily to your face and politeness is disappearing.
I regret that there are so few comfortable meeting places. You're forced to live indoors. In Paris
I go out much more, to restaurants and nightclubs. To meet friends here it usually has to be in a pub,
and it can be difficult to go there alone as a woman. The cafes are not terribly nice.
As a woman, I feel unsafe here. I spend a bomb(大量的錢)on taxis because I will not take
public transport after 10 p. m. I used to use _it ,but now I’m afraid.
The idea of family seems to be more or less non-existent in England. My family is well united and
that's typically French. In Middlesex I had a neighbor who is 82 now. His family only lived two miles
away, but I took him to France for Christmas once because he was always alone.

1. The writer doesn't like London because she______.
A. is not used to the life there now
B. has lived there for seventeen years
C. prefers to live in an old-fashioned house
D. has to be polite to everyone she meets there
2. Where do people usually meet their friends in England? ______.
A. In a cafe.
B. In a restaurant.
C. In a nightclub
D. In a pub.
3. The underlined part "it" (in Para. 4) refers to______.
A. a taxi
B. the money
C. a bomb
D. public transport
4. The writer took her neighbor to France for Christmas because he______.
A. felt lonely in England
B. had never been to France
C. was from a typical French family
D. didn't like the British idea of family

D. My first wife and I only had one child.
E. I've always wanted the best for her.
                                                                   Family Matters
Oliver Darrow, actor, talks about his daughter, Carmen.
1    It might have been nice to have more. I would have liked a son,but we just had Carmen.
I see her as my best friend. I think she always comes to me first if she has a problem. We have the same
sense of humour and share many interests, except that she's crazy about animals, obsessed with them-she has
always had dogs, cats, and horses in her life.
2    That's when they need their parents most. But as soon as Carmen went to school, she seemed to
grow up and grow apart from her family, and any father finds it difficult with a teenage daughter. She was
very moody and had an odd group of friends. There was an endless stream of strange young men coming to
our house. I remember I once got annoyed with her in front of her friends and she didn't talk to me for days.
3    We sent her to a good school, but she wasn't happy there. She left because she wanted to become
an actress.so with my connections I got her into drama school. but she didn't like that either. She worked for
a while, doing small roles in films, but she must have found it boring because she gave it up,though she never
really said why. She got married a few years ago; her husband's a vet. They must be happy because they work
together. and she lores animals.
4    When she was younger I used to take her to the opera-that's nay passion-but she can't have liked it
very much because she hasn't come with me for years. I don't think she goes to the cinema or watches TV
much. She might watch my films. but I don't know. It's not the kind of thing she talks to me about.
I'm very pleased to have Carmen. She's a good daughter, but I don't think she likes my new wife very
much because she doesn't visit us very often. I'm looking forward to being a grandfather one day. I hope she'll
have a son.

even big business, and having wonderful freedom, both from a boss and from the time clock ; the freedom
to make up our own rules for our work, and our own plans -arranging our own hours of work? That way
work would be both painless and fun. Or, so we imagine.
Well, in fact it isn't quite as simple as that. Yes, it is true that being the boss has its satisfactions and that

[1]It is now possible to watch live sport on television on any day of the week, and the current amount of
reporting will undoubtedly increase further in years to come. This is certainly having an influence on the live
sports events themselves, and there are both benefits and shortcomings to this.
[2]Why has there been such growth in televised sport? For one thing, with digital broadcasting, there are
now many more TV channels than there were even ten years ago. Moreover, sport has become an important
form of entertainment, appealing to both men and women.
[3]When are the benefits of this state of affairs? One obvious advantage to the profession is the addition
of money provided by television companies. Large football clubs benefit financially from TV income and the
top players can command very large salaries. Less popular sports also receive money that can be used in
training and awareness-raising. What's more, there is a health benefit to some of the population, because
through televised sport, more people have become interested in actually playing sport.
[4]However, _____ if so much sport is on television. Considering football again, many small clubs have
suffered financial losses recently, as they cannot compete with the large ones. There has been a general falling
in ticket sales, especially among smaller clubs. Fewer people attend live matches nowadays, preferring to
watch from the comfort of their living room. And ticket prices have risen greatly.

What do people do with their old, out-of-date but still useful computers? Most people don’t know
what to do with them. Many old computers are put away in homes. Many more are simply thrown
out with the rubbish.
Finally, some companies are thinking of ways to bring down the number of old computers. Sony
has agreed to help recycle old Sony products(產(chǎn)品), Dell, Hewlett-Packard and other companies
now also take back some old computers.
In some countries, laws are being passed, too. Computer companies will have to pay for
collecting and recycling their used products. And 70% of computer waste must be recycled. The
idea behind the laws is that computer companies themselves should pay the cost. That will encourage
them to make computers that are easier and cheaper to repair and upgrade(升級).
Yet while many people are throwing away good computers, others cannot afford them at all.
Hundreds of organizations(組織)are working to solve this problem. They collect and repair old
computers. Some also teach others how to repair computers.
The computers then go to schools, charities(慈善團(tuán)體)and people who need them. Giving a
used computer to one of these organizations can turn one person’s rubbish into someone else’s useful
things-and cut down on waste, too.
1. What do many people do with old computers?

B. They sell them.
C. They send them to others.
D. They stop using them.
2. What do the organizations do to solve the problem of old computers?

Movie magic can defy reality, but actors are inescapably human. They grow and change, and don't
necessarily change for the better.
Harry Potter actors, who are now saying their final goodbyes to their roles, have all become
fully-fledged (成熟的) grown-ups, worlds apart from the little kids who began the Hogwarts' adventures
in 2001.
While many fans feel sad that the magical franchise (特權(quán)) is coming to an end, some feel even sadder
to see how much the actors have changed over the years.
"Daniel Radcliffe (who plays Harry Potter) went from being a really cute kid to a thin, pale-looking
guy," said Filipino Internet User Lealuvy."I kind of wish he stayed a kid forever.''
Radcliffe himself doesn't seem to be bothered by his change of appearance. In an interview with GQ
magazine last week, he teased himself: "If people find me sexy or cool, it's because they like short, little,
nerdy guys. And we do have our niche (合適的職業(yè))."
Meanwhile, actors growing up to be handsome have their headaches.
Harry Melling, who played Potter's cousin Dudley Dursley, told The Telegraph that he was almost
recast for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows when producers discovered he' d lost a lot of weight he
had as a kid. He was too thin for the part.
"They (the producers) did this double take, 'Oh my God, we are going to have to do something', and I
felt guilty," said Meiling.
Aside from changes in looks, the gradual personality change of child stars is another big concern of
audience and producers.
Miley Cyrus began her career at 13 in Disney's hit TV series Hannah Montana.
When Cyrus decided to show her adult personality by releasing "sexy" photos, people began to get
uneasy about her. Reports said that furious Disney bosses were considering replacing Cyrus with a more
clean-cut teen star.
Cyrus finally kept her role after public apologies. But some parents banned their children watching the
show.
"My daughter has been banned from watching the show," supermodel Cindy Crawford told Showbiz
Spy." I really don't think Miley Cyrus is much of a role model for my kid."
l. The underlined word "defy" in Paragraph 1 means "_____".
A. challenge
B. control
C. clarify
D. abandon
2.Which one is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Actors always grow and change for the better.
B. Daniel Radcliffe can't escape from being a kid.
C. Some fans feel sad about the ending of the film series and the actors' changes.
D. Harry Melling was too thin to recast for the film.
3. Radcliffe doesn't feel bothered by his change of appearance because _____.
A. people think him sexy or cool
B. people like short, little, nerdy guys
C. he thinks he grows up to be handsome
D. some people do think such a boy as him is sexy
4. What do audience and producers concern about?
A. The actors' changes in appearances and gradual personality.
B. The actors' weight.
C. Whether the producers did the double take.
D. Whether the actors are sexy or clean-cut.
