Can you imagine what our life will be like in the year 2050? Perhaps you will be flying off for a holiday on the moon, or maybe you will be taking your dog for a walk in virtual(虛擬的)  reality. We recently
carried out a survey of 1 000 people from different countries to find out what they think life will be like in
the future. The results clearly show both our hopes and fears.
The survey suggests that friendship-one of the most important human relationships-will have changed
dramatically(顯著地) . People will make friends mainly through the Internet. What is more, a large number of people will come across their future wives or husbands in this way! Computers will have become
completely necessary by 2050. Even now, some people begin to regard them as their best friends ! Others, however, say that we will become much more separated and estranged (疏遠(yuǎn)的)  from each other
because we will have little real human contact.
Education will have changed a lot, too.  As more and more children will be using computers in schools, certain abilities,  such as mental arithmetic (心算), won't be necessary since there will be computer
programs for most calculations(計算). Even writing by hand-at least to some extent-will have become a
thing of the past.
According to the survey, home life will be more and more comfortable. Most people believe that by
2050 robots will be doing housework and we will rely mainly on ready-made food. A lot of people tlunk
that we might only cook for fun in the future.
Space exploration will become increasingly popular. Fifty percent of the people we talked to believe
that man will regularly visit Mars. They also believe that travel on our own planet will probably change.
Almost everyone thinks that there will be no cars in the city center. Some even think that
environmentally-friendly electric of solar-powered cars will have replaced the cars we use now.
Pollution is something that worries us very much. Some fear that it will continue to get worse, and that it will be impossible for us to live on our polluted planet. Others even foresee that one day we'll have to
pay for clean air.
On the other hand, people seem to be quite  optimistic about the benefits of genetic engineering, as they think scientists will use it to cure diseases like  cancers and AIDS. If scientists manage to find a cure for
these, we'll have a much healthier society.
Some people worry about the future, while others  are full of hope and confidence. No matter how
dark or bright it may seem, it is up to us to look after our planet and try to make it a better globe to live on.
1. Many people believe that in 2050, we will         .
A. not pay for computers
B. seldom leave our homes
C. not have any real friends
D. find partners and friends mainly through computers
2. The passage suggests that in 2050         .
A. half of the world population will have traveled to Mars
B. students wiU write with typewriters only
C. cooking will nqt be easy to people
D.lessons taught at school and the ways in which they are taught will be very different
3. Some people believe that pollution will have           by 2050.
A. disappeared
B. killed most of the people on the planet
C. become an even worse problem
D. made our planet a warmer place to live on
4. Many people think that by 2050      .
A. there will be a cure for cancers and AIDS
B. people will have stopped dying
C. scientists will solve all the problems we face
D. people won't get diseases

to a hospital, but all the advanced equipment there shows that
there is nothing wrong with you.
Then, consider this:you might be in a state of subhealth (亞健康).
Subhealth, also called the third state or gray state, is explained as a borderline state between health and
disease.
According to the investigation (調(diào)查) by the National Health Organization, over 45 percent of
subhealthy people are middle-aged or elderly. The percentage is even higher among people who work in
management position as well as students around exam time.
Symptoms include a lack of energy,  depression (壓抑 ) , slow reactions,  insomnia (失眠),  agitation
(焦慮 ),  and poor memory. ()ther symptoms include shortness of breath, sweating and aching in the waistand legs.
The key to preventing and recovering from subhealth, according to some medical experts, is to form
good living habits, alternate work and rest, exercise regularly, and take part in open air activities.
As for meals, people are advised to eat less salt and sugar. They should eat more fresh vegetables,
fruits and fish because they are rich in nutritional  (營養(yǎng)的 )  elements- vitamins and trace elements
(微量元素)-that are important
to the body.
Nutrition experts point out that it is not good to eat too much at one meal because it may cause
unhealthy changes in the digestive tract (消化道). They also say that a balanced diet is very helpful in
avoiding subhealth.
1. According to this passage, which of the following is right?
A. When you are in a state of subhealth, you should stay  home and keep silent.
B. When you are in a state of subhealth, you should go to see a doctor and buy some medicine.

Diet Coke, diet Pepsi, diet pills, fat diet, vegetable diet. surrounded by the word "diet" everyw we look
and listen. We have so easily attracted by the promise and potential of   diet products that we have
stopped thinking about what diet
products are doing to us. We are paying for products that harm us psychologically and physically
(身體上).
Diet products significantly weaken us psychologically. On one level, we are not allowing our brains to
admit that our weight problems lie not in actually losing the weight, but in controlling the consumption of
fatty, high-calorie, unhealthy foods. Diet products allow us to jump over the  thinking stage and go straight
for the scale c秤) instead. All  we have to do is to swallow or recognize the word "diet" in  food labels.
On another level, diet products have greater psychological effects. Every time we have a zero-calorie
drink, we are telling ourselves without our awareness that
we don-t have to work to get results. Diet products make people believe that gain comes without pain, and
that life  can be without resistance and struggle.
The danger of diet products lies not only in the psychological effects they have on us. but also in the
physical harm that they cause. Diet foods can indirectly harm  our bodies because consuming them instead
of healthy foods means we are preventing our bodies from having basic nutrients (營養(yǎng)成分). Diet foods
and diet pills contain zero calorie only because the diet industry has created chemicals to produce these
wonder products. Diet products may not be nutritional, and the chemicals that go into diet products are
potentially dangerous.
Now that we are aware of the effects that diet products have on us, it is time to seriously think about
buying them. Losing weight lies in the power of minds, not in the power of medicals. Once we realize this,
we will be much better able to resist diet products, and therefore prevent the psychological and physical
harm that comes from using them.
1. From Paragraph l, we learn that _____.
A. diet products fail to bring out people's potential
B. people have difficulties in choosing diet products
C. diet products are misleading people
D. people are fed up with diet products
2. One psychological effect of diet products is that people tend to _____.
A. try out a variety of diet foods
B. hesitate before they enjoy diet foods
C. pay attention to their own eating habits
D. watch their weight rather than their diet
3. In Paragraph 3, "gain comes without pain" probably means _____.
A. losing weight is effortless
B. it costs a lot to lose weight
C. diet products bring no pain
D. diet products are free from calories
4. Diet products indirectly harm people physically because such products _____.

A. are over-consumed

There is a famous expression in English," Stop the world,  I want to get off ! " This expression refers to
a feeling of panic, or a stress, that makes people want to stop whatever they are doing, try to relax, and
become calm  again. "Stress"means pressure or tension. It is one of the  most common causes of health
problems in modern life. Too much stress results in physical, emotional, and mental  health problems.
There are numerous physical effects of stress. Stress  can affect the heart.lt can increase the pulse rate,
make the heart miss beats, and can cause high blood pressure. Stress can affect the respiratory (呼吸)
system. It can lead to asthma(氣喘). It can cause a person to breathe too fast, resulting in a loss of
important carbon dioxide. Stress can affect the stomach.lt can cause stomachaches and problems of
digesting food. These are only a few examples of the wide range of illnesses and symptoms resulting from
stress.
Emotions are also easily affected by stress. People suffering from stress often feel anxious. They may
have panic attacks. They may feel tired all the time. When people  are under stress, they often overreact to
little problems. For example,a normally gentle parent under a lot of stress at  l work may yell at a child for
dropping a glass of juice. Stress can make people angry, moody, or nervous.
Long-term stress can lead to a variety of serious mental! illnesses. Depression, an extreme feeling of
sadness and j hopelessness, can be the result of continued and increasing{ stress. Alcoholism and other
addictions often develop as a l result of overuse of alcohol or drugs to try to relieve stress. Eating
disorders, such as anorexia(神經(jīng)性厭食),are sometimes caused by stress and often made worse by
stress. If stress is allowed to continue, then one's mental health is put at risk.
It is obvious that stress is a serious problem.1t attacks the body.  1t  affects the emotions. Untreated, it
may eventually result in mental illness. Stress has  a  great influence on the health and well-being of our
bodies, our feelings, and our minds. So, reduce stress: stop the world and rest for a while.

3.

Is this true? Perhaps it is. The body must have enough sleep. Children of your age need ten hours' sleep

A nearly ice-free Arctic Ocean inthe summer may happen three timessooner than scientists
have assessed.New research says the Arctic might lose

most of its ice cover in summer in as few as 30 years insteadof by the end of the century.
The amount of the Arctic Ocean covered by ice at theend of summer by then could be
only about 1 million squarekilometers. That's compared to today's ice extent c范圍)of4. 6
million square kilometers. So much more open watercould be an advantage for shipping
and for extracting(開采)minerals and oil from the seabed, but it raises the questionof
ecosystem change.
While the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in 2007 assessed what might
happen in the Arctic in the future based on results from more than a dozen globalclimate
models, two researchers said that the dram4tic dropsin the extent of ice at the end of
summer in 2007 and 2008called for a different approach.
Out of the 23 models now available, the newpredictions are based on the six most
suited for assessing sea ice, according to Muyin Wang, a climate scientist in a university
of Washington, and James Overland, an oceanographer. Wang and Overland sought
models that best matched what has actually happened in recent years, because, "if a
model can't do today's conditions well, howcan you trust its future predictions?" Wang
says. "
In recent years the combination of unusual warmtemperatures from natural causes
and the global warmingsignal have worked together to provide an earlier summersea-ice
loss than was predicted when scientists consideredthe effects from human-caused

carbon dioxide alone," saysOverland.
Scientists don't expect the Arctic to be totally ice free, figuring that ice still will be
found along northern Canadaand Greenland where powerful winds sweeping across
theArctic Ocean force ice layers to slide on top of each other, making for a very thick
ice cover.

Judging from recent surveys, most experts in sleep behaviour agree that there is virtually an epidemic (流
行病) of sleepiness in the nation."I can't think of a single study that hasn't found Americans getting less
sleep than they ought to," says Dr David.Even people who think they are sleeping enough would probably
be better off with more rest.
The beginning of our sleepdeficit crisis can be traced back to the invention of the light bulb a century
ago. From diary entries and our personal accounts from the 18th and 19th centuries, sleep scientists have
reached the conclusion that the average person used to sleep about 9.5 hours a night."The best sleep habits
once were forced on us,when we had nothing to do in the evening down on the farm, and it was dark." By
the 1950s and 1960s,the sleep schedule had been reduced dramatically,to between 7.5 and 8 hours, and
most people had to wake to an alarm clock."People cheat in their sleep, and they don't even realize they're
doing it," says Dr David."They think they're okay because they can get by on 6.5 hours, when they really
need 7.5,8 or even more to feel ideally energetic."
Perhaps the most merciless robber of sleep, researches say,is the complexity of the day.Whenever
pressures from work , family, friends and community increase , many people consider sleep the least
expensive item on their programme."In our society, you're considered dynamic if you say you need only
5.5 hours' sleep. If you've got to get 8.5 hours, people think you lack drive and ambition."
To determine the consequences of sleepdeficit , researchers have put subjects  through a set  of
psychological and performance tests requiring them, for instance,to add columns of numbers or recall a
passage read to them only minutes earlier."We've found that if you're in sleepdeficit, performance suffers,"
says Dr David."Shortterm memory is weakened,as are abilities to make decisions and to concentrate."
1.What is the main topic of the passage?
A.Research on the causes and consequences of sleepdeficit.
B.The epidemic of sleepiness in the modern times.

B.Some people can remain energetic with only 6.5 hours'sleep a night.
C.If they get 18.5 hours'sleep, people will be full of drive and ambition.
D.People's metal power suffers if they are lacking in sleep.
3.People in the 18th and 19th centuries slept about 9.5 hours a night because________.
A.they were forced by their parents to do so
B.they knew what was best for their health
C.they had no electricity
D.they were not so dynamic and ambitious as modern people are
4.The major cause of sleepdeficit of modern people is________.
A.the endless TV programmes in the evenings and the Internet
B.the pressures of the day
C.the sufficient energy modern people usually have
