Pregnancy(妊娠) and childbirth kill more than 536,000 women a year. More than half of the
cases happened in Africa, according to the World Health Organization. In fact, most of the deaths
are preventable with basic medical care.
The five leading causes are bleeding, infection, high blood pressure, longtime labor and bad
abortions (流產(chǎn)). Mothers' deaths from such causes were largely reduced nearly a century ago
in developed countries.
Experts say that what kill many women are "the three delays",   the woman's delay in deciding
to go to the hospital, the time she loses traveling there and the hospital's delay in starting treatment.
Only about 15 percent of births have dangerous complications(并發(fā)癥).
Women lack education and information about birth control. Husbands and inlaws may decide
where a woman gives birth and insist that she stay at home to save money. However, there is no
single solution to a problem with so many factors shortages of doctors, nurses, drugs, equipment,
roads and transportation-though hospital officials are trying many things now.
One stopgap measure to solve the problem for the present has been to train assistant medical
officers, to perform certain operations. Some African countries are now struggling to train more
assistants and midwives(接生婆), and provide places for pregnant women to stay near hospitals.
But there is a long way to go. Only 20 percent of women in the continent give birth at the hospital.
More than 50 percent stay at home to give birth, and the rest go to local clinics that cannot handle
emergencies.
1. Which is not included in the five leading causes of women's deaths during pregnancy and childbirth?
A. Infection.
B. High blood pressure.
C. Traveling long distances.
D. Bleeding.
2. The underlined word "stopgap" probably means "________" in     the passage.
A. final
B. temporary
C. effective
D. instant
3. What can we learn from this passage?
A. Most problems that cause women's deaths during pregnancy and childbirth can be treated or
prevented.
B. Developed countries should help African countries reduce mothers' deaths.
C. The husbands in poor countries should take responsibility for their wives' deaths.
D. The governments of African countries have to take more effective measures to save pregnant women.
4. What is the author's attitude towards the future of preventing women's deaths during pregnancy and
childbirth?
A. Positive.
B. Negative.
C. Objective.
D. Subjective.

Are you preparing for a big test? If so, you may want to play some basketball in between hitting
the books. Doctors are starting to find more and more information that suggests a connection between
exercise and brain development. Judy Cameron, a scientist at Oregon Health and Oregon Health and
Science University, studies brain development. According to her research, it seems that exercise can
make blood vessels(管), including those in the brain, stronger and more fully developed. Dr. Cameron
claims this allows people who exercise to concentrate better. As she says, "While we already know
that exercise is good for the heart, exercise can really cause physical changes in the brain."
The effects of exercise on brain development can even be seen in babies. Babies who do activities
that require a lot of movement and physical activity show greater brain development than babies who
are less physically active. With babies, even a little movement can show big results. Margaret Barnes,
a pediatrician(兒科醫(yī)生), believes in the importance of exercise. She thinks that many learning disabilities
that children have in elementary school or high school can be traced back to a lack of movement as
babies. "Babies need movement that stimulates their five senses. They need to establish a connection
between motion and memory. In this way, as they get older, children will begin to associate physical
activity with higher learning," says Margaret.
Older people can beef up their brains as well. Scientists from 11 universities studied a group of
seniors ranging in age from seventy to seventy-nine. Their study showed a short-term memory increase
of up to 40 percent after exercising just three hours a week. The exercise does not have to be very
difficult, but it does have to increase the heart rate. Also, just like the motion for infants (嬰兒), exercise
for older people should involve some complexity. Learning some new skills or motions, such as with
yoga or tai-chi, helps to open up memory paths in the brain that may not have been used for a long
time.
For most people, any type of physical activity that increases the heart rate is helpful. The main goal
is to increase the brain's flow of blood. And your brain can benefit from as little as three hours of exercise
a week.
1. What is the best title of this passage?
A. How to exercise
B. How exercise helps the brain
C. How to get good scores on a test
D. How the brain can change
2. According to the reading, what is the connection between exercise and brain development?
A. Exercise makes us stupid.
B. The brain needs special mental exercise.
C. The more exercise, the bigger the brain.
D. Physical exercise helps us think better.
3. Why does the author think that yoga is fit for seniors?
A. It is easy to learn.
B. It can be done in groups.
C. It does not increase the heart rate.
D. It includes learning new motions.

Driving a car is not just handling controls and judging speed and distance. It requires you to predict
what other road users will do and get ready to react to something unexpected. When alcohol is consumed, it enters your bloodstream and acts as a depressant(抑制藥),damaging eyesight, judgement and
coordination(協(xié)調(diào)),slowing down reaction time and greatly increasing the risk of accidents. Even below
the drink driving limit, driving will be affected.
Alcohol may take a few minutes to be absorbed into the bloodstream and start action on the brain.
Absorption rate is increased when drinking on an empty stomach or when consuming drinks mixed with
fruit juice. To get rid of alcohol from the body is a very slow process and it is not possible to speed it up
with any measures like taking a shower or having a cup of tea or coffee.
The present Road Traffic Ordinance states clearly that the limit of alcohol concentration is:
     ● 50 milligrams of alcohol per 100ml of blood; or
     ● 22 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of breath; or
     ● 67 milligrams of alcohol per 100ml of urine(尿液).
Drivers who cause traffic accidents, or who commit a moving traffic offence or are being suspected of
drink driving will be tested.
Any driver found drinking beyond the limit will be charged. The driver declared guilty may be fined a
maximum of HK $25,000 and be sentenced to up to 3 years in prison and punished for 10 drivingoffence points; or temporarily banned from driving.
The same punishment applies to failing to provide specimens(樣本) for breath, blood or urine tests
without good excuse.
Drink driving is a criminal offence. Be a responsible driver, think before you drink. For the safety of
yourself and other road users, never drive after consuming alcohol.

Animals are natural resources that people have wasted all through our history.
Animals have been killed for their fur and feathers, for food, for sport, and simply because they were in
the way. Thousands of kinds of animals have disappeared from the world forever. Hundreds more are on
the danger list today. About 170 kinds in the United States alone are considered in danger.
Why should people care? Because we need animals. And because once they are gone, there will never
be any more.
Animals are more than just beautiful and interesting. They are more than just a source of food. Every
animal has its place in the balance of nature (生態(tài)平衡). Destroying one kind of animal can create many
problems.
For example, when farmers killed large numbers of hawks (老鷹), the farmers stores of corn and grain
were destroyed by rats and mice. Why? Because hawks eat rats and mice. With no hawks to keep down
their numbers, the rats and mice multiplied (繁殖) quickly.
Luckily, some people are working to help save the animals. Some groups raise money to let people know
about the problem. And they try to get the governments to pass laws protecting animals in danger.
Quite a few countries have passed laws. These laws forbid (禁止) the killing of any animals or plants
on the danger list. Slowly, the number of some animals in danger is growing.
1. Animals are important to us mainly because ____.

One way to clean the air is to build a new kind of clean car. That’s what several of the large car
factories are trying to do. But to build a clean car is easier said than done. Progress in this field has been
slow.
Another way is to take the place of the car engine by something else. Engineers are now working on
it. Many makers believe that it will take years to develop a practical model for us.
To prevent the world being polluted by cars, Americans have to make some changes in the way of
their life. They have to cut down on the number of their cars and are encouraged to travel and go to work by bike. But this change does not come easily. Many workers may find themselves without jobs if a car

                                                                   Head above Water
TUVALU, a tiny country in the Pacific Ocean, has asked for help as it will be swallowed up by the sea.
Storms and huge waves are a constant threat and none of Tuvalu's nine little islands is more than five
meters above the sea level. Salt water is already entering the country's drinking water supply, as well as
damaging plants that produce fruit and vegetables. Without urgent help, the country's days are numbered.
But Tuvalu is not the first place to face sinking into the sea. Venice, a historic city in Italy best known
for its canals, has sunk about 24 cm over the past 100 years. Experts say that it will have sunk another 20-
50cm by 2050. A century ago, St. Mark's Square, the lowest point city, flooded about nine times a year.
Nowadays, it happens more than 100 times. While Venice is slowly sinking into the mud on which it stands,
global warming causes Tuvalu's rising sea level.
     The average global temperature has increased by almost 0.5 centigrade degrees over the past century;
scientists expect it rise by extra l-3 degrees over the next 100 years.
Warmer weather makes glaciers (冰川) melt, adding more water to the ocean. The warmer temperatures
also make water expand, so it takes up more space, causing the sea level to rise. The sea level has risen about
10-25 cm in the last 100 years.
The main cause of global warming is human pollution. Through burning coal, oil and gas, people have
been increasing the green-house gases in the atmosphere, such as CO2. This adds to the power of the
greenhouse effect, making the planet even warmer.
Many scientists believe that, if the warming is not stopped, there will be huge climate changes. The sea
level could rise by one meter this century.
Should this come true-the sea will swallow up millions of homes and the world will be flooded with
"climate refugees" looking for somewhere to live?
1. We can infer from the second paragraph that _____.
A. Tuvalu is in danger of being swallowed up by the sea
B. all Tuvalu's islands are about five meters above the sea level
C. drinking water in Tuvalu has been destroyed
D. Tuvalu is often flooded by storms and waves
2. The author uses Tuvalu and Venice as examples in order to explain _____.
A. they are the first place sinking into the sea
B. they are both sinking into the mud where they stand
C. they will disappear in the future
D. their trouble is caused by global warming
3. Put the following events in the right order.
    a. Glaciers began to melt.
    b. People bum coal, oil and gas.
    c. The greenhouse effect is growing.
    d. The earth is getting warmer and warmer.
    e. The sea level is rising.
