Beauty has always been regarded as something admirable. Almost everyone thinks that attractive people
are happier and healthier; they have better marriages and have more respectable jobs. Personal consultants
(顧問(wèn)) give them better advice for finding jobs. Even judges are softer on attractive persons. But in the
executive circle, beauty can become a liability.
While attractiveness is a positive thing for a man's rise, it is harmful to a woman's. Handsome male
executives (主管) were considered as having more honesty than plainer men; effort and ability were thought
to be the reasons for their success. Attractive female executives were considered to have less honesty than
unattractive ones; their success was attributed not to ability but to factors such as luck. All unattractive
women executives were thought to have more honesty and to be more capable than the attractive female
executives.
Why are attractive women not thought to be able? An attractive woman is thought to be more feminine
(女性的) and an attractive man more masculine (男性的) than the less attractive ones. Thus, an attractive
woman has an advantage in traditionally female jobs, but an attractive woman in a traditionally masculine
position appears to lack the "masculine" qualities required.
This is true even in politics. Anne Bowman recently published a study on the effects of attractiveness on
political candidates. She asked 125 undergraduate students to rank two groups of photographs, one of men
and one of women, in order of attractiveness. The students were told the photographs were of candidates
for political offices. They were asked to rank them again, in the order they would vote for them.
The results showed that attractive males completely defeated unattractive men, but the woman who had
been ranked most attractive always received the fewest votes.
1. In traditionally female jobs, attractiveness _____.
[     ]
A. strengthens the feminine qualities required
B. makes women look more honest and capable
C. is of great importance to women
D. often enables women to succeed quickly
2. Bowman's experiment shows that when it comes to politics, attractiveness _____.
[     ]
A. turns out to be an obstacle to men
B. affects men and women alike
C. has as little effect on men as on women
D. is more of an obstacle than a benefit to women
3. It can be inferred from the passage that people's views on beauty are often _____.
[     ]
A. practical
B. old-fashioned
C. prejudiced
D. serious
4. The author writes this passage to _____.
[     ]
A. discuss the negative aspects of being attractive
B. give advice to job-seekers who are attractive
C. demand equal rights for women
D. emphasize the importance of appearance

Goals can help you do, be and experience everything you want in life. Instead of just letting life happen
to you, goals allow you to make your life happen.
Successful and happy people have an idea of how their life should be and they set lots of goals to help
them succeed. By setting goals you are taking control of your life. It' s like having a map to show you where
you want to go. Think of it this way. There are two drivers. One has a destination in mind which is laid out
for her on a map. She can drive straight there without any wasted time or wrong turns. The other driver has
no goal or destination or map. She starts off at the same time from the same place as the first driver, but she
drives without an aim around, never getting anywhere, just using up gas and oil. Which driver do you want
to be?
Winners in life set goals and follow through on them. Winners decide what they want in life and then get
there by making plans and setting goals. Unsuccessful people just let life happen by accident. Goals aren't
difficult to set―and they aren't difficult to reach. It's up to you to find out what your goals and ideals (理想)
really are.
Research tells us that when we write a goal down, we are more likely to achieve. Written goals can be
reviewed regularly, and have more power. Like a contract with yourself, they are harder to neglect (忽視)
or forget. Also when you write your goals in a particular way, you are able to make yourself be continuously
alert (警覺) to situations that will further your goals.
1. The writer gave the example of two drivers to show _____.
[     ]
A. how stupid the first driver was
B. the importance of having a map and right direction
C. how stupid the second driver was
D. the importance of setting goals
2. According to the passage, successful people are different from unsuccessful ones because _________.
[     ]
A. the successful people set goals for everything and can get help from others
B. the unsuccessful people always set unrealistic plans for themselves
C. the successful people set goals in their lives and make plans to carry it out
D. the unsuccessful people make plans for everything but can not work hard
3. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
[     ]
A. Goals can make you gain everything you want in life.
B. Only successful people can be happy.
C. If you want to succeed, you need toset long-term goals instead of short-term Goals.
D. When we put our goal down on papers,we are more likely to succeed.
4. Which is the best title for the passage?

A. Goals help you succeed
B. How to succeed
C. Why we always fail
D. A research on setting goals

Is there a "success personality"-some winning combination of qualities that leads almost inevitably (必然
地) to achievement? If so, exactly what is that secret success formula (公式), and can anyone develop it?
At the Gallop Organization we recently focused in depth on success, inquiring into the attitudes of 1500
distinguished people selected at random (任意地) from Who's Who in America. Our research finds out a
number of qualities that occur regularly among top achievers. Here is one of the most important, that is
common sense.
Common sense is the most widely possessed quality of the people surveyed. 79 percent award themselves
a top score in this quality. And 61 percent say that common sense is very important in contributing to their
success.
To most, common sense means the ability to present sound, practical judgments on everyday affairs. To
do this, one has to remove extra ideas and get right to the key points of what matters. A Texas oil and gas
businessman puts it this way:"The key ability for success is simplifying. In conduction of meeting and dealing
with industry reducing a complex problem to the simplest term is highly important."
Is common sense a quality a person is born with, or can you do something to increase it? The oil man's
answer is that common sense can definitely be developed. He owes his to learning how to debate in school.
Another way to increase your store of common sense is to observe it in others, learning from their-and your
own-mistakes.
Besides common sense, there are many other factors that influence success: knowing your field, self-
reliance, intelligence, the ability to get things done, leadership, creativity, relationships with others, and of
course, luck. But common sense stands out. If you develop these qualities, you'll succeed. And you might
even find yourself listed in Who's Who someday.

Once Lu Xun spoke to the young men about the study of foreign languages. He said: "You must not give
up studying foreign languages for even a day. To master a language, words and grammatical rules are not
enough. You must do a lot of reading. Take a book and force yourself to read it. At the same time, turn to
dictionaries and memorize grammatical rules. After reading a book, it's only natural that you won't understand
it all. Never mind. Put it aside, and start another one. In a few months or half a year, go over the first book
again; you are sure to understand much more than before... Young people have good memories. If you
memorize a few words every day and keep on reading all the time, in four or five years, you will certainly be
able to read works in the foreign language."

Honesty comes in many forms. First there's self-honesty. Is what people see the real
article or do you appear through smoke and mirrors? I find that if I try to be something
I'm not, I feel unsure of myself and take out a part from my PBA (personal bank account ).
I love how singer Judy Garland put it, "Always be a first-class version of yourself,
instead of a second-class version of somebody else."
Then there's honesty in our actions. Are you honest at school, with your parents, and
with your boss? If you've ever been dishonest, I think we all have, try being honest, and
notice how whole it makes you feel. Remember, you can't do wrong and feel right. This story
by Jeff is a good example of that:
In my second year of study, there were three kids in my math class who didn't do well.
I was really good at it. I would charge them three dollars for each test that I helped
them pass. I'd write on a little piece of paper all the right answers, and hand them off.
At first I felt like I was making money, kind of a nice job. I wasn't thinking about
how it could hurt all of us. After a while I realized I shouldn't do that anymore, because
I wasn't really helping them. They weren't learning anything, and it would only get harder
down the road. Cheating certainly wasn't helping me.
It takes courage to be honest when people all around you are getting away with cheating
on tests, lying to their parents, and stealing at work. But, remember, every act of
honesty is a deposit into your PBA and will build strength.
1. Which of the following can best explain Judy Garland's words?
[     ]
A. Be your true self rather than follow others.
B. Don't copy others or you can't be the first class.
C. Make efforts to be the first instead of the second.
D. Don't learn from others unless they're excellent.
2. What does the author expect to show by Jeff's story?
[     ]
A. honesty can be of great help.
B. A bad thing can be turned into a good one.
C. Helping others cheat can do good to nobody.
D. One should realize the wrong in his bad deeds.
3. In the last paragraph the author mainly wants to express _____.
[     ]
A. one must be brave to be honest
B. it's difficult to be honest when others are not
C. one should be honest when making a deposit
D. honesty in one's actions can help him in the future

Every day, life is made and lost. Every day, life goes on. Every day we experience some of the most
important parts of life and may not even realize it: love, generosity, and perseverance. These values aren't
just important to us; they make the world what it is. Scientists say that gravitational (重力的) force makes
the world turn, but some people say that love makes it go round. Love can be found anywhere: in families,
friends, even complete strangers. Even of you can't see it, you know it's there.
Love may connect people all over the world, but what would the world be without generosity? Whether
after a national disaster, or a school fund-raiser, one thing is certain-it is better to give than to receive.
Generosity is found everywhere and whether it's a large or small act, it makes a difference. Most of all,
being generous is not something you need any qualifications for, but no matter what you do, it can make
a difference. Sometimes, though, it takes effort to be generous, which leads us to perseverance.
Founding a country, riding a bike, or finishing an essay, these are all finished with perseverance.
Perseverance is the one thing that can help us achieve whatever we want. It is what helps scientists to
discover cures for diseases, and athletes to become champions. You may fail, but every time you make
a mistake, that's one less to make the next time.
There is an infinite (無(wú)窮的) number of things we value, but without love, generosity and perseverance,
we just don't think that our life or the world would be the way it is.
1. The underlined word"it" in the second paragraph refers to "_____".
[     ]
A. the world
B. gravitational force.
C. value
D. experience
2. To be generous, the author thinks _____.
[     ]
A. you needn't make efforts
B. you should be qualified
C. you should give all you have
D. you will find it good to give
3. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
[     ]
A. Peseverance is the only thing that can help us to achieve success
B. People don't understand the life they are experiencing at all
C. We can find love in complete strangers sometimes
D. What the world is like depends on gravity and love.

You may not realize it, but you are doing much more than just studying when you are at school. School is
also the place where you learn . But this is not always easy. What can you do if you just don't like one of your
classmates?
If you discover that you have problems getting along with your classmates or friends, the most important
thing to learn is tolerance (寬容). Tolerance is the ability to realize and respect the differences in others. We
can not change the way that other people do, so it is important to learn to live happily with them.
Tolerance will make everyone get on better with each other. Knowing others constantly makes us understand
others' difference. Something different does not exactly mean that it is bad. Tolerance teaches us to keep an
even temper and open mind.
You need to remember an old saying, "Treat others how you want to be treated." You would like to be
treated kindly by your classmates, so it is important to treat them kindly too. If you tolerate something, it does
not mean that you have to like it. No one is asking you to change who you are or what you believe in. tolerance
just means that you should respect the differences in others and not try to make them change.
It is important to practice tolerance, because it will make everyone's life easier. Learn to accept people for
their different abilities and interests. The world is very different, and practicing tolerance in your own school
and city can help make a difference.

Now more than ever, overcoming fear and holding onto hope are necessary and important. Trying these steps
below will ___________.
Be Kind to Yourself
Think about what you need most, and then do it. Is it a cup of tea, quiet music, a little rest, or reading
inspirational literature? Whatever it is, grant yourself permission to do it, even for just a few minutes.
Create a Daily 5-Minute Silence Moment
