What is it that makes people happy? Youth, health, a good job, god looks, a flashy(浮華的) car? None of these things, Spanish experts say.

The concept of happiness is coming under increasingly close examination in Spain.

As the nation rises to the club of the world’s wealthiest countries, people are discovering that material things do not bring happiness.

“Most people use money as a measure of human value,” says Jesus Ynfante, author of a book on Spain’s 300 Biggest Fortunes.

“Expensive products are regarded as the best. The rich are admired simply for being rich”, Ynfante said.

Yet psychologists warn that happiness cannot be bought. They advise people to look for it in human relations and in the small pleasures of everyday life.

Many people regard happiness as a moment of ecstatic pleasure(狂喜) —something that, by definition, cannot last—while others speak of it as peace and acceptance of oneself. Polls(問卷調(diào)查) in different countries indicate that between 65 and 85 percent of the world’s population regard themselves as reasonably happy.

Around 40 percent of a person’s happiness is thought to be determined by genetics. While the rest depends on childhood environment and the process of growing up.

Perhaps the most surprising thing about happiness is that it has little to do with age, health, wealth, or other values thought to be important in western society.

For most Spaniards, happiness is linked with feeling close to other people.

Happy people accept their limitations and set themselves reachable goals, experts say.

There are lifestyle choices which favor happiness, such as exercise, eating carbohydrates and exposing oneself to sunlight.

But the main secret of happiness is to take pleasure in small things.

“If you are given a choice between eternal (永久的) happiness and a cheese sandwich, take the sandwich.” advises musician Julian Hernandez.

It is reasonable to say that every teenager can be affected by peer pressure(從眾心理) at some point. Every day, in any high school, peer pressure has a major influence over the behavior of teenagers. It can be as subtle(微妙的) as being persuaded to be late for class or as extreme as a dangerous drug. Whether subtle or extreme, peer pressure can have damaging, some-times life changing, and even serious results.

“Teens don’t often consider the long-term results that some behavior can cause,” said Terri Price, a researcher. “Peer pressure can be very difficult to handle for many teens because of their fears of not fitting in.” Peer pressure has always been part of teen life, but teens experience it differently than former generations did in the past. Sources of peer pressure have increased because of the Internet and other electronic communications.

Recognizing peer pressure can be as simple as noticing that you have been asked to do something that you are not comfortable with. “Listen to your instinct(直覺), which is a sign for whether something is right or wrong. If it feels wrong, then most likely it is.” Says Price.

Teens are in a time of life when they are still discovering who they are. Many teens are influenced by peer pressure because of their insecurities. This can make them helpless especially when their selfcontrol is weak or they lack healthy support, causing them to take risky behavior or turn to unhealthy support.

Dealing with peer pressure is a topic of concern for teens. People can say, “Just say no,” but the truth is that the statement is easier said than done.

74.You can know whether a teen suffers peer pressure by watching ______.

A.whether he often surfs the Internet

B.whether he can get security

C.whether it is subtle or extreme

D.whether he feels comfortable with it

Can hard work be replaced by machines in agriculture? Yes, man is trying out automatic (自動化) farming. It is fun to watch a machine picking tomatoes. The strange machine sails like a ship across a sea of plants. In its front is a hole. As the machine moves forward, tomato plants are pulled into the hole. The tomatoes are gathered while the rest of the plants are thrown back onto the fields.  Twelve workers sit on top of the machine. They rapidly pick out the bad fruit from the tomatoes. A red stream of ripe tomatoes is being sent into a cart that is pulled alongside the machine. One driver and twelve workers can pick in an hour ten tons of a new kind of tomato. Without the invention, it would take 60 men to do the job.

Not all plants cooperate well with the farming machines. Take lettuce(萵苣)for example, seeds plants in the same field in the same time ripe at different times. The only way to tell a ripe head of lettuce is to look at it and feel it. And now there is a machine even to do that!

There is a special machine to test lettuce. When it moves over one that feels right, it sends a signal back to the picking machine which goes behind. The cutting and picking is done satisfactorily by this unit.
