第三部分:閱讀理解 (共20小題;每小題2分, 滿分40分)

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個(gè)選項(xiàng)(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項(xiàng)。

“Love your neighbour as yourself” is a saying familiar to most of us. It means that you must have the ability to love and accept yourself in order to form and keep satisfying relation- ship with others. Self-esteem means accepting yourself for who you really are, and believing that you are indeed a worthwhile person who is deserving of love and respect from others.

Self-esteem is our sense of how good we feel about ourselves. It is based on our judgment of ourselves, not on other people's assessment, but simply on our own. Our self-esteem is not dependent on our talent. Some very ordinary people feel very good about themselves, while other extraordinarily high achievers hold low opinions of themselves.

Self-esteem is the primary key to long-term stress management. Why? The first three sources of stress are: predictable life events, unexpected changes and build-up of daily stresses, These are much easier to handle when we believe in ourselves, A positive, healthy self-esteem gives us the “hardiness” (強(qiáng)健) to deal with the difficulties of life, and to see them as challenges to be met, rather than threats to be feared.

The fourth category of stress is entirely the result of a low self-esteem. It is the category of stress that is most common and tiring, over the long run. This kind of stress cannot be overcome, or even changed, until the self-esteem problems that cause it are corrected.

Learning to love yourself for who you are is the key to overcoming stress. Self-esteem comes form the self, and cannot be promoted by others. A person who feels that his self- esteem comes from the approval of those around him or her is bound to self-destruct (自焚). One cannot keep the level of “performance” required to please everyone else, especially if that performance disagrees with who you are and is simply a facade that makes you popular with the world. When the applause is gone, there is nothing left.

Only those who can feel the strength of knowing who they are and those who can feel good about that will survive the stresses of life. Self-esteem is the basis of contentment and positive living.

So I’m driving the lovely and patient older daughter to work. At 7 a. m., she pushes the seat

warmer button as her new Honda zooms across L. A., the City of Padded Shoulders.

"Oh, look, I’m low on gas," she says.

First, we pick up her boss, then we pick up her other boss. They are all headed to Staples Center for some awards show. My daughter does something in public relations, I’m not sure what. But when this show comes along, she gets very busy.

"In the past two nights I’ve gotten, like, seven hours sleep," she notes, the implication being that I sleep all the time, which is pretty much true.

In Los Feliz, a dashboard light confirms that we are, indeed, low on fuel. This does not perturb my daughter.

"Don’t worry, we’ll get there," she says.

My daughter says nothing about getting back home, which is my job. I’ve just agreed to drop her off, so she can avoid traffic later. My task is simple, though now full of uncertainty.

I don’t know how I ended up dropping my daughter and her bosses off at 7 a.m. on a Sunday. I just know that J.D. Salinger may now be dead, but I still feel like Holden Caulfield -- at the mercy of too many yammering adults.

Now, I’ve had mixed luck with adults.

Apparently, my daughter’s job in PR is to keep everyone happy while telling the truth as much as possible. I sent her to college to study that. Now she is an expert.

"After you drop us off, you can get gas," my daughter assures me.

I have been her chauffeur for 26 years. By the time she was 3, I’d snapped her into a car seat some 14,000 times. I took her to seventh-grade dances, ski trips, college.

Even after all that, we continue to have a civil relationship, sort of a queen-mum-and-her-

driver sort of dynamic. When I screw up, she just raises her pretty chin and snorts. It’s very British.

By the way, my daughter now has a nicer car than I do, which is a sign she is doing well. Or, as with so many young people, she is up to her hoop earrings in consumer debt.

B.he is content with his grown daughter

C.he does not like his daughter’s bosses

D.he will not believe his daughter any more

3.It can be concluded from the passage that_________.

A.the author won’t have any difficulty in getting gas

B.the daughter cares for her father a lot

C.the author has done a lot to help his daughter get where she is

D.the British people have pretty chin and snort often

4.By referring to J. D. Salinger and Holden Caulfield, the author is most probably_________.

       A.recalling his daughter’s childhood

B.mentioning his family members who are now dead

C.comparing his situation to a scene in a famous literary work

       D.telling a story about his daughter’s friends

5.What is the best title for this passage?

       A.A PR’s Busy Life

       B.Relationship Between Dad and Daughter

Americans have contributed to many art forms, but jazz, a type of music, is the only art form that was created in the United States. Jazz was created by black Americans. Many blacks were brought from Africa to America as slaves. The black slaves sang and played the music of their homeland.

Jazz is a mixture of many different kinds of music. It is a combination (合并) of the music of west Africa, the work songs the slaves sang, and religious music. Improvisation(即興創(chuàng)作)is an important jazz. This means that the musicians make the music up as they go along, or create the music on the spot. This is why a jazz song might sound a little different each time it is played.

Jazz bands formed in the late nineteenth century. They played in bars and clubs in many towns and cities of the South, especially in New Orleans.

New Orleans is an imitational seaport, and people from all over the world come to New Orleans to hear jazz.

Jazz became more and more popular. By the 1920s, jazz was popular all over the United States. By the 1940s, you could hear jazz not only in clubs and bars, but in concert halls as well. Agence Rrance-Presse--- French doctors this week carried out the world’s first operation on a human in zero gravity, using a specially adapted aircraft to create conditions in space.

During a three-hour flight from Bordeaux in southwest France, the team of surgeons and anesthetists (麻醉師) successfully removed a benign tumor (良性瘤) from the forearm of a 46-year-old volunteer. The experiment was part of a program backed by the European Space Agency to develop techniques for performing robotic surgery aboard the International Space Station or at a future Moon base.

“Now we know that a human being can be operated on in space without too many difficulties,” says the team leader Dr. Dominique Martin.

Under normal ground conditions, the operation would be performed under a local anesthetic. Without gravity, the surgeon’s work is harder and the patient’s body reacts differently. Blood doesn’t pump in the same way.

The custom-designed Airbus 300 aircraft performed a series of parabolic swoops (拋物線飛行), each creating between 20 seconds of weightlessness. The process was repeated 32 times.

Fixed inside a custom-made operating block, three surgeons and two anesthetists worked during these periods, with their instruments held in place with magnets around the patient’s bed. The next part of the program is to carry out a remote-controlled operation using a robot controlled from the ground by satellite. This experiment should take place within a year, Martin says.

Anesthetist Dr. Laurent de Coninek says that zero-gravity surgery offers huge promise for space exploration, although it would at first be limited to treating simple injuries. Today more than 400 people have already traveled into space. The chances of injuries occurring during missions will become even greater and to bring a wounded person back to the earth for treatment is both risky for them and expensive.

1. What would be the best title for the test?

   A. A Special Operation for Doctors            B. First Operation on the Moon

   C. World’s First Operation in Zero Gravity       D. An Important Experiment for Doctors

2. What’s the purpose of the operation?

   A. To have an experiment on space operation. B. To cure the patient.

   C. To do it at the request of the patient.       D. To reduce the danger of operation on earth.

3. It is difficult for doctors to do operations in space because________________.

A. the patient’s illness will be more serious            B. the patient has no feeling about pain

C. the patient’s body reacts differently                D. the patient’s flood will stop flowing

4. The last paragraph mainly wants to tell readers________________.

A. there are many people injured in space    B. it is necessary to do the experiment

   C. it is risky to travel in space               D. there is no need to bring patients in space to the earth
