Science summer camps are one of the best ways to improve creativity of students and teach them a practical approach towards science and its applications (應用).Students taking part in the camps can learn to appreciate science and technology at an early age, to be better positioned for further learning and finally better prepared to face challenges.Apart from theories, scientific experiments and discussions are encouraged at these camps.

The science summer camps are usually held between June and August and it’s good for parents to start planning their children’s summer camps at least 6 to 7 months in advance. This period of time provides an opportunity for them to do proper research and save money. With more than 2,000 summer camps in the US, there is a wide variety for parents to choose from.If the child doesn’t like biology, there  is no point sending him to an anatomy (解剖學) science camp.Likewise (同樣地), if one thinks that his child limits himself to books throughout the school year, he should try and choose camps which provide students with an opportunity to move out in the open and be physically active. To make the task easier, there are many websites which provide online resource materials to help parents select a summer camp that fits the needs of their children.

Generally, a science summer camp costs between $ 150 and $ 500, depending on where the camp is located, how long it lasts and of course what subject it covers. Some of them also provide scholarships (獎學金) for bright students to encourage them.

How do successful people think? What drives them? Interviews and investigations indicate that there are several keys to success that successful people share.

First of all, successful people never blame someone or something outside of themselves for their failure to go ahead. They realize that their failure lies in their own hands. They understand that they cannot control things in life, such as nature, the past and other people. But in the meantime, they are well aware that they can control their own thoughts and actions. They take responsibility for their life and regard this as one of the most empowering(給人以權(quán)利的) things they can do. Perhaps what most separate successful people from others is that they live life “on purpose”-they are doing what they believe they are put here to do. In their opinion, having a purpose in their life is the most important element that enables them to become fully functioning people. They hold that when they live their life on purpose, their main concern is to do the job right. They love what they do-and it shows. People want to do business with them because of their commitment(投入、獻身). To live their life on purpose, successful people find a cause they believe in and create a business around it. Besides, they never easily give up. Once they have set up goals in their life, they’re willing to do whatever it takes to achieve their goals. Top achievers always bear in mind that they don’t have forever.

Rather than seeing it negative or depressing, they use the knowledge to support themselves and go after what they want energetically and passionately.

56. Successful people owe their failure to ___.

A. others             B. the society    C. themselves           D. their fate

57. Successful people know that they can only control ___ forever.

A. society  B. the past  C. their thoughts and actions  D. other people

58. The biggest difference between successful people and general people is that ___.

A. successful people have a purpose in life         B. successful people can work hard

C. successful people have better minds        D. successful people can always win support

59. People like to do business with successful people because of their ___.

A. money       B. cleverness               C. fame           D. devotion to work

60. The writer wants to tell us ___.

A.how people live on purpose             B. how people can be successful

C. how people make plans                   D. how people do business

MOSCOW — The Olympic flame in Vancouver had only been put out before President Dmitri A. Medvedev of Russia, angered over his country’s disappointing performance at the Winter Games, began calling for athletic officials’ heads.

“Those who are responsible for training for the Olympics must take responsibility,” Mr. Medvedev, who canceled his scheduled trip to the closing ceremony, said in Moscow on Monday. “They must have the courage to hand in their resignation(辭職報告). And if they do not have this determination, we will help them.”

Such language from the typically measured Mr. Medvedev strengthens the disappointment here with the nation’s athletics just four years before Russia hosts the next Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Russia is pumping billions of dollars into preparations for the 2014 Winter Games, which officials have considered as a symbol of Russia’s return to the top of the world stage.

Prime Minister Vladimir V. Putin said last week that Russia’s performance at the Olympics should be given “serious critical analysis.” “This critical analysis should be directed at improving the situation and creating the necessary conditions for the preparation and successful performance of our team in the Sochi Olympics in 2014,”   he said. Russian athletes took home just three gold medals from Vancouver, compared with eight in the last Winter Games, in Turin, Italy.

Russia came in sixth place in the overall medal count with 15, just ahead of South Korea and trailing far behind its former cold war athletic rival, the United States, which led with 37.

For Russians used to seeing their athletes top international competitions, the last two weeks have been awful. Russian figure skaters fell, bobsledders turned over and, in a final embarrassment, the country’s much proud hockey team was smacked by Canada 7-3 and did not even make the medal round.

53. The underlined word smack in the last paragraph means:

A.  guided   B. trained  C. beaten  D. controlled

Russian athletes got 8 medals in the last Winter Games.

South Korea ranked 5 in the overall medal count in this Winter Games.

The next Winter Games will be held in Russia four years later.

55. What do we know about President Dmitri A. Medvedev ?

A. He attended the closing ceremony of the Winter Games in Vancouver.

B. He ordered a serious analysis about the Russia’s performance at the Olympics.

C. He will resign due to Russia’s performance at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

D. He had planned to go to Vancouver but didn’t make it.

56. What is the main idea of this passage ?

A. Russian figure skaters fell in this Winter Olympics

B. Russian will host the next Winter Olympics

C. Russians are angry about their athletes’ performance.

D. Russians are making preparations for the next Winter Olympics.

Dr. Sylvia Earle wants you to stop eating fish. It’s not because fish are endangered, though wild fish stocks in many oceans are very low. It’s not because they’re bad for you, though fish in many areas are exposed to poisonous substances in the water.   86  .

“Fish are sensitive; they have personalities, says the marine biologist. For Earle, eating a fish would be like eating a dog or a cat. “I would never eat anyone I know personally.”

There’s a lot more to fish than meets the eye: they talk to each other, they like to be touched, and they engage in behavior that can seem very human.   87   . Earle and a growing number of animal rights activists see these as strong arguments against eating fish altogether.

88   . “While it may seem obvious that fish are able to feel pain, like every other animal, some people think of fish as swimming vegetables,” says Dr. Lynne Sneddon. “Really, it’s kind of a moral question. Is the enjoyment you get from fishing (or eating fish) more important than the pain of the fish?”

Fishermen and (fried) fish lovers are skeptical. “I’ve never seen a smart fish,” says Marie Swaringen as she finishes off a plate of fish at a Seattle seafood restaurant. “  89   .”

“For years, everyone’s been telling us to eat fish because it’s so good for us,” says another diner. “Now I’ve got to feel guilty while I’m eating my fish?   90   ? Don’t eat salad because cucumbers (黃瓜) have feelings?”

A. What are they going to think of next

B. It’s because they’re smart

C. The activists also point out that fish feel pain and fish suffer horribly on their way from the sea to the supermarket

D. They can remember things and learn from experience

E. Obviously fish are just a kind of vegetables

F. If they were very smart, they wouldn’t get caught

G. Don’t they feel guilty while eating their fish
