There is a boy in my gym class (I’ll call him Bill) who has unbearably yellow teeth that almost make everyone feel unpleasant. Recently another boy told Bill that he should “go Ajax” his teeth. Bill was crushed. Had the other boy been thinking, he would have realized that there is a better way to handle such a situation. He could have dealt with it with tact. He could have showed this hurtful truth in a more careful, sensitive way—that’s “tact”.

If a person isn’t sensitive to another’s feelings, there is no way he or she can be tactful. Yesterday, my 5-year-old brother proudly announced that he had cleaned the screen on our television set. Unfortunately, he used furniture polish(亮光油), which produced an oily film on the television screen. My mother smiled and thanked him for his efforts—and then showed how to clean the screen properly. Her sensitivity enables my brother to keep his self-respect. Yet, sensitivity alone does not make tact.

“Tactfulness” also requires “truthfulness”. Doctors, for example must be truthful. If a patient has just been disabled in an accident, a tactful doctor will tell the truth—but express it with sensitivity. The doctor may try to give the patient hope by telling them curing techniques under study or about advanced equipment now available. Doctors must use tact with patients relatives as well. Instead of bluntly saying, “Your husband is disabled,” a doctor might say, “I’m sorry, but your husband has lost feeling in his legs and…”

Tact should not be confused with trickery. Trickery occurs when a nurse is about to give a patient an injection and says, “This won’t hurt a bit.” Instead of trickery, the nurse might guarantee the patient that the discomfort of the injection is a small thing compared to the benefits of it. It would also be thoughtful for the nurse to tell the patients about some of these benefits.

Tact is a wonderful skill to have, and tactful people are usually admired and respected. Without tact our society would become an intolerable place to live in.

When told he should “go Ajax” his teeth, Bill probably felt ________________.

A.surprised               B.cheated

C.regretful               D.painful

According to the author, his mother’s praise for the brother is _______________.

A.both sensitive and tactful          B.sensitive but not tactful enough

C.truthful but not tactful            D.sensitive but trickish

The fourth paragraph mainly talks about __________________.

A.how to comfort the patients

B.how to use trickery carefully

C.differences between trickery and promises

D.a(chǎn)nother feature of tact

Which of the following shows the structure of the passage? (The numbers stand for the paragraphs)

The French submarine is called Le Triomphant, meaning“the winner”.The name of the British submarine is Vanguard, meaning“the leading position in an army”.It’s clear from the submarines’names that they were made for victory.

However,it was an accident, rather than a victory, that led these two submarines to recently make news headlines across the world.

On February 16,Britain and France admitted that two of their nuclear—armed submarines,HMS Vanguard and Le Triomphant, collided while deep in the Atlantic in early February. Both submarines were on secret patrols(巡邏)and carrying nuclear arms when they collided.

Le Triomphant had no idea that it had run into HMS Vanguard until several days later. The French navy at first believed that Le Triomphant had hit an“object, probably a container(集裝箱)”.

Investigations have begun to work out how such a collision could have happened. Both submarines are equipped with state-of~the—art(最先進(jìn)的)technology that is supposed to find other submarines.Yet,neither submarine saw the other until it was too late.

One idea being considered was that their anti-sonar(抗聲納)equipment,which hides submarines, was just too effective in hiding one from the other.

Submarines use sonar to sense what is in the sea near them.Sonar is a submarine’s ear. Many sea animals use sonar as well.Dolphins produce high-pitched(聲調(diào)高的)clicks.when these clicks hit an object, some of the sound will echo(發(fā)出回聲)back to the“sender”.By listening to the echo and working out the time it took before the echo came back, the dolphin can work out how far away the object is.

There are two kinds of sonar:active sonar, which sends out signals, and passive sonar, which listens for signals with extremely sensitive microphones.

The two submarines were designed to be very quiet and as hidden as possible.because a submarine’s job description(工作職責(zé))is not to be found. Many modern submarines do not use active sonar, only passive sonar. This makes it very difficult for a submarine to“hear”if another submarine is near.

Britain’s Ministry of Defense(國防部) has said the collision did not lead to any radioactive leaks(放射物泄漏).The chance of a full nuclear explosion was almost impossible. However, experts say that if the walls of the submarines had broken,or a fire had been started, there could have been a major disaster.

A senior British Navy source told The Sun newspaper that the possible consequences of such a collision were“unthinkable”.

“It’s very unlikely there would have been a nuclear explosion. But a radioactive leak was a possibilitv. That would have been a national disaster.”he said.

64、What has made HMS Vanguard and Le Triomphant well known recently?

A、l heir names carried very positive meanings..

B、They collided in the Atlantic this February.

C、They are both equipped with advanced technology.

  D、They are both nuclear—armed submarines.

65、What’s the probable reason for the accident?

A、The two submarines were moving at a high speed.

B、Their anti—sonar equipment was too effective.

C、They were not equipped with active sonar..

D、The submarines were designed to be too quiet.

66、Which of the following is the right order in which the dolphin senses the object’s position?

   a、The sound hitting the object.

   b、Producing high—pitched sound.

   c、The sound echoing back.

d、Working out the time to come back.

   e、Receiving the sound.

  A、b一a—c—d—e   B、d—a—e—c—b   C、b—c—d—a—e   D、b—a—c—e—d

67、Which of the following is NOT true about the passage?

A、Both of the submarines carried nuclear arms when they collided.

B、Many modern submarines do not use passive sonar so as to be as hidden as possible.

C、The collision may have caused a disaster if a fire had been started.

D、There would have been a nuclear explosion if the two submarines had collided harder.

Most people feel lonely sometimes, but it usually only lasts between a few minutes and a few hours.

This kind of loneliness is not serious. In fact, it is quite normal. For some people, though, loneliness can last for years. Now researchers say there are three different types of loneliness.

The first kind of loneliness is temporary. This is the most common type. It usually disappears quickly

and does not require any special attention. The second kind, situation—for example, family problem, the death of a loved one, or moving to a new place. Although this kind of loneliness can cause physical problems, such as headaches and sleeplessness, it usually does not last for more than a year.

The third kind of loneliness is the most severe. Unlike the second type, chronic(the opposite of

“temporary”)usually lasts more than two years and has no specific cause. People who experience habitual loneliness have problems socializing and becoming close to others. Unfortunately, many chronically lonely people think there is little or nothing they can do to improve their condition.

Psychologists agree that one important factor in loneliness is a person’s social contacts, for example,

friends, family members, co-workers, etc. we depend on various people for different reasons. For instance, our families give us emotional support, our parents and teachers give us guidance, and our friends share similar interests and activities. However, psychologists have found that, though lonely people may have many social contacts, they sometimes feel they should have more. They question their popularity.

Psychologists are trying to find ways to help habitually lonely people for two reasons: they are unhappy and unable to socialize and there is a connection between chronic loneliness and serious illness as heart disease, while temporary and situational loneliness can be a sad, and sometimes dangerous condition.
