第三部分 閱讀理解(共20小題;每小題2分,滿分40分)
閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個(gè)選項(xiàng)(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項(xiàng)。
Many people will remember the flight of the space shuttle(航天飛機(jī))challenger,in June,1983. The achievement of Sally Ride,America’s first woman astronaut to fly into space, made this flight especially memorable. Students from two Camden, New Jersey, high schools, however, are probably to remember Norma rather than Sally whenever they think about the flight.
Norma didn’t travel alone. She brought about 100 companions along with her. Norma was an ant,a queen ant who, with her subject, made up the first ant colony(群體)to travel into space. The ants were part of a science experiment designed by students to test the effects of weightlessness on insects.
The equipment designed by the students for their colony functioned perfectly throughout the long space trip. The young scientists and their teachers were very sad to find that their insect astronauts had all died at some point before the container was returned to the school and opened. The problem didn’t occur in space, but on the ground after challenger had landed. The container remained in the desert for nearly a week before the ant colony was moved. The hot,dry desert air dried out the colony’s container and the ants died from lack of moisture(水分).
The project was termed success because it did provide useful information. Students will continue their efforts to pinpoint(精確找到)what went wrong. They will try to prevent the same difficulties from reoccurring on future missions. They don’t want to be discouraged either by the demise of the ants or by the $ 10,000 shuttle fare they will have to pay to send the next colony of ants into space.
51.What does the passage mainly tell us?
A.Sally Ride,America’s first woman astronaut.
B.How to keep ants alive in space.
C.How to make equipment for insects in space.
D.An experiment with ants in space.
52.According to the passage, we know that the underlined word“demise”is another word for“_____”.
A.death B.colony
C.insect D.moisture
53.We don’t think the project was a failure. This is because_____.
A.everything went as smoothly as expected
B.the students had pinpointed exactly the reason
C.something important had been learned
D.the students had succeeded in the experiment
54.We can conclude that ants _____ on the next space trip.
A.will have to be kept alive in a container full of water
B.will have to be sent into space with the first woman astronaut
C.should be put into a container where there is enough food
D.should be put into a container which is not too dry

The man traveling in the back of the ambulance which was running at a high speed along the streets of Baltimore that morning in 2008 had no business to be alive.By everything that was reasonable, and there were plenty of such things before,he should have been very dead indeed. But he wasn’t.As the people in the hospital pointed out after they had examined him,he was only slightly hurt.Yet he had just fallen 150 feet down a hotel lift shaft(電梯通道)!
Unknown to the man,two things had occurred which were to affect his life that day.On the thirteenth f1oor of the hotel, somebody had carelessly left the lift gate open.Down in the basement, a pipe had burst and,it had flooded the bottom of the lift shaft to a depth of two feet.
Modern lifts have all sorts of fail-safe system to prevent accidents, but this was ancient equipment unreliable, slow, dangerous, and suitable material to recycle.
The man had plenty of things to occupy his mind that morning. He had overslept. The hotel had forgotten to call him and now he was late for an important business appointment. He dressed quickly, shaved hurriedly, took hold of his briefcase and hurried off down the hotel corridor.
Good! The life gate was open. The life must be there. He need not press the button and wait while the large, clumsy life made its way upwards. Without looking or thinking, he stepped out into space. The lift cage was, in fact, one floor above him on the fourteenth. The would which he had walked was a narrow space of not very fresh sir, ending 150 feet below in two feet of dirty water.
The man fell, making his journey to the ground at a speed he had never dreamed of. Confused patterns, a rush of air, time enough to be afraid, split-second thoughts of death, then-crash!
Perhaps this gave him the record for some sort of high-diving act. No doubt in future he always looked before he jumped. Certainly be learnt that this was no way to save time. The experts said that those two feet of water had saved his life.
59.What do we learn about the man?
A.He fell from the 13th floor. B.He was hit by an ambulance.
C.He got caught in a serious flood. D.He made a record for high-diving.

C.was alive and this was surprising D.didn’t do any business
61.Tile lift did not have a fail-safe system because it was____________.

Brain Transplants
Research on the human brain has been attracting more and more scientists in recent years. 71 If we compare a human brain to a hard disc, what the scientists are doing is to make better use of the hard disc.
The idea that a human brain could be transplanted (移植) may come from Frankenstein. In 1999, an experiment turned a bear into a dolphin (海豚). 72 They were made of the memory area in the dolphin’s brain containing information about swimming. They had a series of useful information, which was saved into a button – sized chip (芯片). Later the information was transplanted into the action memory area in the bear’s brain. 73 It proved to be a highly successful experiment and a bear was turned into a dolphin.
Recently, another memory transplant was performed at the Motor Nerve Rescarch Instance of the University of California. The experiment bad an entire transplant of the memory area. 74 The transplant was performed from a dog named Cenius to a dog named idiot. Cenius could follow up to 100 gestures and orders made by its master. It was a real genius in memorizing. However, Idiot had no contact with people since its birth. It because an animal with nothing in its brain, without any memory.
75 When the two dogs woke up, Idiot had grasped all the abilities Cenius possessed; it was good at memorizing and sensible. It could follow every gesture and any command given by its master. But Cenius gave no response to its master, and did not recognize him at all.
A.The experiment was a complete success.
B.It included actions, moods, logic, words, images, etc.
C.Then it was released (釋放) by means of electric power.
D.Different images have different meanings in the memory area.
E.Using the most advanced technology, detailed images were produced.
F.Discoveries show that messages are carried by the central nervous system in the brain.
G.One of the latest topics is how to change the human brain or combine it with the computer.
